CPTV WEEKEND TREAT - 1980 PHR NATS

07_16_2011_martinTravel back to a time when Dragsters and Funny Cars did dry hops. Pro Stockers pulled the levers. This was a time when drag racing's video coverage was more about tape delay and syndication and ESPN was still in its infancy.

CompetitionPlus.tv, via Youtube.com, visits U.S. 131 Dragway [Martin, Mich.] for the 1980 Popular Hot Rodding Nationals.

This event wasn't a national event on the NHRA Winston World Championship Series. Instead, it was an NHRA Division 3 points race and considered a staple of the drag racing "must-run" events. In this event, professional drivers gathered points towards the championship. Ironically this event was staged on the same weekend as the NHRA Molson Grandnational in Montreal, Quebec.

Many of the teams raced both events on this weekend.
