THE SPRING FLING COMES TO GALOT

For the past seven years, the K&N Spring Fling brand of races has made the middle of May at Bristol Dragway’s famed Thunder Valley the home for some of the best bracket racers in the country. Not so this year.

“When our racers come into a Spring Fling event, they are expecting a one-of-a-kind experience at a premier facility,” co-promoter Peter Biondo explained earlier this year. “So, Kyle and I have searched high and low for the right facility and time of year and have put a ‘Fling schedule and payout structure in place for 2017 that I think racers are going to love.”

DECADES OF EXPERIENCE HELPS JIM HUGHES REDEFINE THE TRACK OPERATOR, RACER DYNAMIC

“It’s so easy.”

For Jim Hughes, it is nearly impossible to count the number of times he has heard that said about what it’s like to own and operate a motorsports facility. And, for many years, Hughes could count himself amongst that very same crowd.

But after nearly two years in the dragstrip business, Hughes can honestly say that “easy” is the farthest thing from the truth when it comes to making a race track tick.

“The biggest misconception is, and that’s a tough one because this all came about so quickly that I really didn’t give it a lot of thought, but from the outside looking in, the racers always think it’s easy,” Hughes said. “But there is so much that goes on at a dragstrip. From ticketing, to parking, spectators, concessions, the facility itself. It makes you really, really appreciate race tracks like the Bader’s (Summit Motorsports Park) and the New’s (Firebird Raceway Dragstrip) up in Boise.

YABBA DABBA DOO WORKS WELL FOR THIS SUPER STOCKER

When you see the car, you might think it's a reference to "The Flintsones," the Hanna-Barbera animated sitcom first created in 1960 about the Flintstone family of Fred, Wilma, their daughter Pebbles and dog Dino from the town of Bedrock. But at second glance, neither Fred nor Wilma nor family friend Barney Rubble is driving the Flintstone car. It's 2014 Classic Gear Jammers champion Josh Barczy, 21 – a third-generation Sportsman racer from Walnut Cove, N.C. driving the car his grandfather Jimmy Flynt raced for a couple of decades.

And that makes perfect sense, because for Barczy, racing is a family affair. Multiple generations and branches of the family spend many of their weekends racing together. And they really do race together. Car trailers and motor homes park as one in the family compound at the track.
