EVENT FINAL  - ADRL Veterans Victorious in Ohio

Gatorz_winners.jpg
(L-R) Frankie Taylor, Shannon Jenkins, David Janes and Billy Vose enjoy the victory lane accolades after winning in the ADRL’s 2nd annual Gatorz Ohio Drags at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

Thousands of American Drag Racing League (ADRL) fans swarmed the starting-line area at Summit Motorsports Park in px_winner.JPGNorwalk, Ohio, for a raucous celebration of winners Frankie Taylor, Shannon Jenkins, David Janes and Billy Vose in the 2nd annual ADRL Gatorz Ohio Drags.

Though winning for the first time with the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard, longtime Pro Extreme pilot Taylor headlined the quartet of veteran racers in victory lane, which climaxed with series president Kenny Nowling personally handing out ADRL memorabilia to every single fan who remained when the interviews and photo sessions were over.

“It’s just our way of saying thank you for being part of a truly remarkable event,” Nowling stated. “We enjoyed a record-setting day here in Norwalk and I just wanted to cap it off by sending a little bit of the ADRL home with everyone here.”

Jenkins drove his “Black Ice” 1968 Camaro to a record fifth Pro Nitrous event title while setting a new speed record of 192.91 mph over the eighth-mile course in his final-round win over points leader Billy Harper. Janes successfully defended his 2007 Extreme 10.5 event win against surprise finalist H.T. Wilson and Vose became the first repeat winner in the Pro Extreme Motorcycle category since it joined the ADRL’s raceday mix last season.

Taylor, known as the “Mad Man” back home in Dickinson, Texas, qualified his supercharged 2005 Corvette fourth in the 16-car Pro Extreme field, then beat Dwayne Watkins and Brian Daniels before receiving a pass to the final when top qualifier and defending series champ Jason Scruggs was unable to stage for the semis after suffering engine damage in round two.

pn_winner.JPGWaiting for Taylor was Bubba Stanton, the 2006 class champion, who made it past Todd Robertson, Mike Stawicki and points leader Joshua Hernandez after qualifying his 1963 split-window Corvette second. Stanton, however, lost traction off the start while Taylor streaked to the Gatorz Ohio Drags title in 3.90 seconds at 195.90 mph.

“It took a while, but it was worth it,” said Taylor, who has been part of the ADRL since its inception in October 2004. “They say the first one is the hardest to win, so maybe I can get a couple more now. I sure hope so; I could get used to this!”

Jenkins, from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was the class of the Pro Nitrous camp all weekend, qualifying first with a 3.92 at a then-record 191.35 mph, then remaining at the top of the elapsed time and speed charts throughout eliminations in wins over John DeCerbo, Steve Vick, and a redlighting Dennis Radford in the semis.

Harper, meanwhile, started third and made it past Teddy Smith, Ed Burnley and Harold Martin to reach the final round. His three-time, race-winning 2001 Viper got out of shape off the launch against Jenkins, however, and sideswiped the left wall while Jenkins posted a 3.93-seconds pass and the new speed record en route to tying Hernandez for the most ADRL wins ever. Harper was uninjured in the accident, which caused “mostly cosmetic” damage to the car, he said.

xtf_winner.JPGJanes, a Missouri chassis builder who actually created Jenkins’ car earlier this year, started eighth and beat points leader Mike Hill in the opening round. He then seized a big starting-line advantage over Billy Glidden in round two that allowed his 4.36 at 164.51 to beat the much quicker and faster 4.25/171.47 put together by Glidden. Janes repeated with another holeshot victory over Todd Moyer in the semis, which also saw Moyer set a new class speed record of 181.79 mph in his Pasadena, Texas-based, twin-turbocharged 2000 Firebird.

Wilson, who usually concentrates on tuning his wife, Michelle’s, championship-contending 2000 Firebird, steered his outdated 1989 Camaro to a 14th-place start before scoring surprising wins over Steve Kirk Jr., class newcomer Kevin McCurdy and Gary White to reach his career-first final. Wilson got the jump on Janes in the final round by .037, but that’s where his luck ran out as Janes went on to remain the only winner for the XTF crowd in Ohio with a career-best 4.30 at 165.01 mph combination.

Vose, the reigning Pro Extreme Motorcycle champion from Buck Mountain, Pennsylvania, qualified first on his 2000 Suzuki, then went to the final after wins over Monte Campbell, pxm_winner.jpgRonnie Procopio and Nikie Corley, winner of the previous event in Budds Creek, Maryland. In the final round he met number-four qualifier Matt Prophit, who advanced through T.T. Jones, Scott Gray and Robert Hunnicutt in the preliminaries.

Vose left with a huge .065 advantage off the start, which allowed his 4.32 at 164.55 mph to beat Prophit’s 4.28/166.42 combo by just inches at the finish line.

The ADRL returns to action Sep. 12-13, with its Hushpower Dragstock V at Rockingham (NC) Dragway. The series concludes its eight-race season Oct. 24-25, at the Texas Motorplex, in Dallas.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING - NITROUS OUTSHINES ALL IN RECORD-FILLED DAY

Jenkins legs to early lead and potential world record at ADRL Ohio Drags …

pn_jenkins.JPGWhile his fellow Awesome/Al Anabi teammate was halfway across the country competing in Tulsa, Pro Nitrous icon Shannon Jenkins sprinted to one-half of a new ADRL Pro Nitrous speed world record during first day qualifying at the ADRL Gatorz Eyewear Ohio Drags in Norwalk, Oh

Jenkins, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., recorded the provisional No 1 qualifying position with a 3.925 elapsed time and claimed early dibs on the record with a 191.35 mile per hour speed. He will be required to run within one-percent for an official record per standard drag racing rules.

Jenkins’ teammate Mike Castellana is competing in the IHRA Sooner Nationals in Tulsa, Ok. where he is presently qualified second behind the nitrous entry of Jim Halsey.

px_scruggs.JPGAt least three nitrous entries are in the three-second zone thanks to the efforts of Billy Harper (3.958) and Dennis Radford (3.973).

The bump spot for the sixteen-car field stands at a 4.117 posted by Rickie Smith.

The Pro Extreme division had a tough day at the office with at least three accidents, with one team able to continue racing. The carnage had no adverse effects on defending world champion Jason Scruggs of Tupelo, Miss., as he drove his classic Corvette to the provisional No. 1 spot and both ends of the Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park track record with a 3.805 elapsed time at an impressive 203.34 mph run.

Scruggs has at least a .05 cushion between himself and No. 2 qualifier Josh Hernandez, who turned in a 3.855, 195.25 lap.

Tommy Gray anchors the sixteen-car field with a 4.103 elapsed time.

xtf_glidden.JPGBilly Glidden continues to make himself at home in the Extreme 10.5 division as he edged out Steve Kirk Jr. (4.265) for the top spot with a 4.235 second run at 169.81. The second-generation drag racer competes in a Pontiac Grand-am previously campaigned in NHRA Pro Stock this season.

Former IHRA Top Sportsman standout Jerry Albert sits on the bump with a 4.951.

Nikie Corley leads the Pro Extreme Motorcycle division with a 4.289 elapsed time at 168.65 miles per hour.

Three different racing accidents during the first day of qualifying at the ADRL Ohio Drags in Norwalk, Ohio, sent one driver to

the hospital and the other two scurrying to the pits to make necessary repairs.

Pro Extreme racer Larry Higgingbottham, destroyed his beautiful 1957 Chevy when tire shake sent his doorslammer from the right lane into the left lane, missing opponent Frankie Taylor and impacting Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park’s [SREMP] left retaining wall. The force of the impact sent the car back into the right lane where he hit the right side wall head-on.

According to the ADRL, Higgingbottham was awake and alert. He was transported by ambulance to the local medical facility for further evaluation.

Prior to that, Puerto Rico-based Pro Extreme racer Anthony Prestamo crossed the center-line and passed behind Tommy Gray, impacting the right hand retaining wall. He emerged from the accident uninjured.

Mike Bell had a brush with the SREMP guardwall earlier during the pre-qualifying test session, but his 1968 Camaro appeared to only have cosmetic damage.

THURSDAY PREVIEW - RECORD CROWDS EXPECTED FOR ADRL EVENT

adrl_crowd.jpg
Last year's crowd for the ADRL national event at Summit Motorsports Park was impressive, especially after three rain delays, but the 2nd annual ADRL Gatorz Ohio Drags this weekend (Aug. 22-23), is expected to draw a record-setting number of fans to the 45-year-old, drag-racing facility in Norwalk, Ohio.
Last year, the inaugural visit of the Flowmaster American Drag Racing League (ADRL) presented by the National Guard to Summit Motorsports Park had “the makings of a magical event,” according to track president Bill Bader Jr., but seven inches of rain the week before and three rain delays on raceday put a slight damper on things.

“By rights that event should have got crushed,” Bader said. “But it didn’t. In fact, we still had more than 20,000 people in the stands at one point and to get that kind of turnout with that kind of forecast is really a testimony to what the ADRL does.”

What the ADRL intends to do with the 2nd annual ADRL Gatorz Ohio Drags this coming weekend is crush the single-day attendance record at the storied Norwalk, Ohio strip. Considering the 45-year-old facility is one of the largest in the world, with seating for more than 30,000 fans and playing host to several other high-profile racing events each year, it’s an admittedly bold claim, but one that ADRL Vice President Jeff Fortune is confident the all-eighth-mile drag racing series can back up.

“We confirmed 41,742 people came through the gate on Saturday at Houston Raceway Park earlier this year—which actually set a record for the largest one-day crowd in the history of the sport—and we absolutely think that record will fall this weekend,” Fortune stated. “The Norwalk experience is about to meet the ADRL experience.”

Weeks before each national event, the ADRL sends a team to the region to distribute tens of thousands of complimentary tickets, paid for by series and event sponsors. Those tickets are collected upon entry to determine accurate attendance records and so far in 2008, the series has produced new single-day attendance records for each track on the schedule.

“If the weather is good—and right now it looks like it will be excellent—I think everyone will be amazed at what happens in Norwalk this weekend,” Fortune said. “This is going to be an absolutely huge event for the track, the racers, the fans, local businesses and, of course, for the ADRL.”

The 2nd annual ADRL Gatorz Ohio Drags, the sixth of eight ADRL national events this year, will be held Aug. 22-23, at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. The ADRL’s next event will be its Hushpower Dragstock V, Sept 12-13, at Rockingham (NC) Dragway, with the season ender set for Oct. 24-25, at the Texas Motorplex in Dallas.
