2014 NHRA LAS VEGAS-2 - EVENT RESULTS
SUNDAY -MASSEY, WORSHAM, ENDERS-STEVENS AND HINES EARN VICTORIES AT LAS VEGAS
Erica Enders-Stevens reclaimed the Pro Stock points lead with one race remaining by earning a major victory at the NHRA Toyota Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday.
Spencer Massey (Top Fuel), Del Worsham (Funny Car) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the penultimate playoff event in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship.
Enders-Stevens powered her Royal Purple Chevy Camaro to a 6.587-second pass at 209.36 mph to defeat reigning world champ Jeg Coughlin in the final. It was the fifth win of the season for Enders-Stevens and 11th of her career. She dominated at Las Vegas this season, also winning the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals in March. She will now head to the Auto Club NHRA Finals with a 17-point lead over Jason Line.
“I wanted to come in with a positive attitude,” said Enders-Stevens, who is trying to become the first female Pro Stock world champion in NHRA history. “When I walked in the gate on Thursday afternoon I had a good feeling. I was a nervous wreck in Reading. I’ve never felt that way in my racing career. I decided I was going to give it to God, keep the faith, do my best and let him do the rest. That quick mental change made everything run so much smoother today.”
Line, driver of the Summit Racing Chevy Camaro, entered the event with a 35-point advantage and reached the semifinals, falling to Enders-Stevens after a red-light start.
In Top Fuel, Massey claimed his third victory of the season by outrunning J.R. Todd in the final round with a 3.756 at 330.88 in his Red Fuel powered by Schumacher dragster. It was Massey’s 17th career victory and third at Las Vegas. With the win, he climbs to second in points, 109 behind series leader Tony Schumacher heading into the season finale.
“The car started off running extremely well,” Massey said. “We started running a new chassis this weekend and we wanted to see where it would lead us. It showed a lot of promise. For [crew chiefs] Phil Schuler and Todd Okahara and my entire team, we’ve been working so hard all season long to finally make good solid runs and be consistent on race day.”
Schumacher came into the NHRA Toyota Nationals with a 136-point lead over Doug Kalitta, but fell in the first round to Billy Torrence.
Worsham picked up his first Funny Car win since Richmond 2009 when he drove his Toyota Camry to a performance of 4.064 at 318.39 to take the victory over 16-time world champion John Force. It was Worsham’s first win of the season following runner-up finishes at Englishtown and Dallas. He denied Force a chance to climb within one point of series leader Matt Hagan.
“I think we’ve been to probably four finals and this is the first time we’ve won with Kalitta Motorsports,” said Worsham, who won a world championship in Top Fuel in 2011. “We’ve almost had lane choice and low elapsed time in all those finals and we didn’t bring out a big enough stick. Today, the big bat was out. This was all about the crew chief and the crew and the job they did today.”
Hagan fell to Worsham in the semifinals and holds a 21-point lead over Force heading to Pomona.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hines, who entered Las Vegas with a 25-point advantage over Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson teammate Eddie Krawiec, raced to the win with a 6.965 at 191.02, defeating reigning world champ Matt Smith. Hines, who claimed his class-leading sixth victory of the season and 38th of his career, holds a 92-point advantage over Krawiec in his bid for a fourth world championship.
“I don’t want to play defense,” Hines said of his preparation for the Auto Club NHRA Finals. “I’m going to go on the offense. I don’t want to give up any bonus points during qualifying. I want to keep it over 80 points so we can roll into Sunday with the championship basically mathematically locked up.”
The NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship finale is Nov. 13-16 with the 50th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona in Southern California.
R. SMITH CLAIMS LAS VEGAS VICTORY, SECOND CONSECUTIVE NHRA PRO MOD DRAG RACING SERIES WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Rickie Smith took home his second consecutive world championship title with a victory during the final race of the NHRA Pro Mod Drag Racing Series season Sunday at the NHRA Toyota Nationals. Pro Mod racing at this event is presented by Aeromotive, Inc.
Smith powered his nitrous-injected IDG Camaro to a 5.912 second pass at 242.63 mph, defeating No. 1 qualifier Don Walsh in the final round at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was Smith’s third win of the season and seventh of his career. He had previously clinched his second career title with his second round victory over Rick Snavely.
“I’m competitive and I feel I can drive these cars as good as anybody,” said Smith, a native of King, N.C. “I handle it in bad situations. Like I told my crew chief, it isn’t all about cutting lights. You’ve got to know where you want to stage up there. You got to know when it shakes, when to pedal. That’s where I have won these two championships, being able to drive the car when the car isn’t acting right.”
Smith becomes the only Pro Mod Series driver to claim multiple championships. He began the weekend as the No. 2 qualifier, defeating Danny Rowe in the first round on Saturday night. His 5.886 at 243.15 second round victory over Snavely sealed the deal for the title. He went on to beat 2012 Pro Mod world champ Troy Coughlin in the semifinals with a 5.945 at 242.54 to Coughlin’s losing 6.116 at 241.28.
Coughlin, driver of the JEGS turbocharged Corvette, finishes second in the points for the second consecutive year. He picked up victories at Norwalk and the NHRA Carolina Nationals, giving him six career wins.
Walsh backed up his No. 1 qualifying effort with a final round appearance. He defeated Pete Farber, Kevin Rivenbark and Von Smith en route to the final.

SATURDAY - TODD, HAGAN, ENDERS-STEVENS AND HINES CLAIM TOP QUALIFIERS AT LAS VEGAS
Matt Hagan took another step towards a second Funny Car world championship when he qualified No. 1 with the sixth quickest time in NHRA Funny Car history at the NHRA Toyota Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday.
J.R. Todd (Top Fuel), Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) and Andrew Hines (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were top qualifiers at the penultimate playoff event in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship.
Hagan powered his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger to a career-best performance and a track record 3.983-second pass at 322.42 mph to claim the top spot, taking away the No. 1 qualifier from his rival John Force, who sits second in points. The run was the first three-second Funny Car pass at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
“I’m glad we were able to do the three-second run for the fans out there,” said Hagan, who secured his second No. 1 qualifying position of the season and 17th of his career. “They wanted to see a three-second run. Heck when we were coming back, there were a lot John Force fans were cheering for it. Just great for my guys.”
Force, who announced Peak Antifreeze as a major sponsor for 2015, qualified second with 4.022 at 320.66 in the Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang. Force, who trails Hagan by 41 points, will race Jon Capps in his elimination opener.
Courtney Force, who is third in points, posted a 4.024 at 320.66 in the Traxxas Ford Mustang, good enough for the third starting spot. Force, who reached the finals of both Las Vegas events last season, faces Paul Lee. Ron Capps’ NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger qualified fourth with a 4.037 at 322.34 and goes up against Tony Pedregon. Jeff Arend drove the Alo Drink Dodge Charger to a fifth place qualifying effort with a 4.042 at 310.91, securing a first round matchup with Robert Hight.
Todd, a winner at Denver earlier this season, raced to the No. 1 position in Top Fuel with his track record run of 3.732 at 327.43 in his Optima Batteries dragster. Todd, whose first race of the season was here in the spring, has three No. 1 qualifiers this season and six in his career. He will face T.J. Zizzo in the opening round.
“To me, Las Vegas is not one of the places where I come to expect to set records,” Todd said. “The conditions are way different than they were yesterday. I think it’s going to be like this tomorrow. I honestly didn’t think it would hold up with the two cars behind us.”
Spencer Massey piloted his Red Fuel powered by Schumacher dragsterto a 3.732 at 327.43, taking the No. 2 qualifier. Massey, who has wins at Atlanta and Topeka this season, takes on Terry McMillen in round one.
Doug Kalitta, who sits second in Top Fuel points, put his Mac Tools dragster third with a 3.747 at 317.74, setting up a first round bout with Brittany Force. Richie Crampton, Friday’s No. 1 qualifier, was fourth with a 3.748 at 325.14, pitting him against Bob Vandergriff on race day. Points leader Tony Schumacher was fifth quickest with a 3.754 at 329.18. His U.S. Army dragster faces Billy Torrence.
Enders-Stevens ran a Pro Stock track record 6.576 at 209.75 to claim her third straight No. 1 qualifying position in the Royal Purple Chevy Camaro. Enders-Stevens, who now has six No. 1 qualifiers this season and 12 in her career, set the track speed run during her first qualifying session of the day at 209.88 mph. With her qualifying effort both days she trimmed series leader Jason Line’s advantage from 35 entering the race to 23 points entering eliminations. She will pair up against Jeff Isbell in the first round.
“As I said yesterday, I love racing here,” Enders-Stevens said. “I’ve got a really good hot rod. It was encouraging going into the fourth qualifying session because we hadn’t laid down a really great run yet. My crew chief said we were going after it and we sure did.”
Shane Gray’s Gray Manufacturing Chevy Camaro was second quickest with a 6.596 at 208.97, setting up a first round matchup with Larry Morgan. Gray is currently fourth in points.
Reigning world champ Jeg Coughlin qualified his JEGS.com Dodge Dart third after a 6.597 at 209.20. He faces Aaron Stanfield in round one. Dave Connolly, who sits third in points, took his KYMCO Chevy Camaro to the No. 4 qualifier with a 6.601 at 208.78. He opens with V Gaines. Points leader Jason Line’s Summit Racing Chevy Camaro went 6.605 at 209.56, claiming the fifth starting spot and a first round pairing with Matt Hartford.
In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Hines, who entered Las Vegas with a 25-point advantage over Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson teammate Eddie Krawiec, posted a track record 6.946 at 192.55 to claim his first top qualifying position of the season and 35th of his career. He will face John Hall in the first round.
“I’ve been close a couple times,” Hines said of a No. 1 qualifier this season. “It was nice to finally lay down a good clean, straight pass in my v-rod and go to the top. It’s been quite a dry spell. Almost two years to the date.”
Reigning world champ Matt Smith was second in his Stockseth Racing Buell with a 6.882 at 195.76, setting up a first round pairing with Scotty Pollacheck. Smith is looking for his first win of the season.
Michael Ray qualified third with a 6.883 at 195.79 on his Arrow M Ranch Suzuki. He will take on Jim Underdahl. Krawiec is the No. 4 qualifier with a 6.893 at 192.88, good enough for a first round matchup with Hector Arana Jr. Recent St. Louis winner Jerry Savoie was fifth following a 6.930 at 194.41 on the Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki. He races Shawn Gann in round one.

FRIDAY - CRAMPTON, J. FORCE, ENDERS-STEVENS AND SAVOIE TOP LEADERBOARD AT LAS VEGAS
In the thick of the battle to earn another NHRA Funny Car world championship, John Force raced to the qualifying lead Friday at the NHRA Toyota Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Force powered his Castrol GTX High Mileage Ford Mustang to a 4.039 second pass at 318.54 mph to top the field, completing the pass alongside championship rival Matt Hagan, who entered this event with a 36-point lead over the 16-time champ. Jack Beckman, whose car is now tuned by former Force crew chief Jimmy Prock, was the top qualifier until Force’s run knocked him off.
“We got down there so we feel good about the run,” said Force, whose 10,000-horsepower machine is now tuned by John Medlen. “You’ve got to get every point you can. Hagan picked up points too. When it gets down to the end, points do count. He picked up a point the last session and I don’t want him to get another round ahead of me.”
Hagan sits No. 2 following a 4.044 at 318.02 in his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger. Hagan, the 2011 Funny Car world champion, gained a point in the first session of qualifying and two in the second session to stay 36 ahead of Force.
Beckman ran a 4.045 at 318.84, good enough for third after two sessions. His pass held until the Force/Hagan run that ended the day in Funny Car. This is the first race that longtime Force crew chief Prock is now involved with Beckman’s Infinite Hero Dodge Charger team.
Crampton, a winner at Englishtown and Indianapolis earlier this season, raced to the top spot in Top Fuel with a 3.764 at 322.42 in his GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster. Crampton, who is in the running for the Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award, is two sessions away from claiming his first career No. 1 qualifying position.
“It’s pretty exciting to leave here Friday night sitting on the top of the ladder,” said Crampton. “We’ve done that before but ended up getting bumped on Saturday. We’ll see how tomorrow pans out. I think we are going to have fantastic weather to lend itself to some great elapsed times. We will see how we do.”
Larry Dixon raced to the provisional No. 2 position following career best numbers with a 3.766 at 326.71 in the Casedhole Solutions dragster. The run came at an important time for Dixon, who was announced as one of two full-time drivers at Bob Vandergriff Racing next season. He is a three-time world champion.
Doug Kalitta was third with a 3.772 at 322.81 in the Mac Tools dragster. Kalitta, who led the Top Fuel points standings for most of the regular season, trails Tony Schumacher by 136 points with two races remaining.
In Pro Stock, Enders-Stevens is racing for her third consecutive No. 1 qualifying position with her 6.647 at 208.01 in a Chevy Camaro. Enders-Stevens gained three points on series leader Jason Line and now trails by 32 going into Saturday’s final two qualifying sessions.
“I’m really proud of my team,” Enders-Stevens said. “Those baby points are going to matter. They’re very significant especially with as tight as Jason, myself and Dave [Connolly] are right now. We were really conservative the first session. If you look at our 60 foot time, we were ninth and then went straight to the top of the page. We’ll throw something at it tomorrow and see what happens.”
Reigning world champ Jeg Coughlin was second-quickest during opening day, piloting his JEGS.com Dodge Dart to a 6.653 at 207.69. Coughlin, who got off to a slow start during the Countdown this season, is looking for a third win on the season.
Line is third with a 6.555 at 207.59 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro. His run tied him with third place Connolly, who ran an identical 6.555, but went 207.30 in speed, giving Line the lead.
Savoie, who recently secured his first Pro Stock Motorcycle win at St. Louis last month, ran a 6.946 at 192.55 on his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki to move to the top of the leaderboard.
“We struggled at the first of the year,” Savoie said. “Fuel injection is a really funny thing. It can help you and it can hurt you. Beginning of the year we were hurting and now it’s helped. It’s a good thing, we’ve been blessed.”
Michael Ray raced his Arrow M Ranch Suzuki to the provisional second spot with a 6.956 at 193.82. Reigning world champ Matt Smith raced his Stockseth Racing Buell to a 6.974 at 193.02 to claim the third provisional spot. Points leader Andrew Hines is fourth while Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson teammate Eddie Krawiec sits seventh. Krawiec trails Hines by 25 points for the championship.
Qualifying concludes on Saturday for the NHRA Toyota Nationals with sessions at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m.
