2015 NHRA SONOMA NATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS

SUNDAY - BECKMAN, BROWN, MCGAHA AND KRAWIEC RACE TO NHRA SONOMA NATIONALS VICTORIES

Jack Beckman

Jack Beckman finished off a dominating weekend at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals on Sunday by racing to the Funny Car victory.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Sonoma Raceway. It is the first time in NHRA history where all four No. 1 qualifiers went on to win the race.

Beckman kept alive his hopes of becoming the eighth driver to sweep the Western Swing and only the second in Funny Car to accomplish the feat when he sped past Tommy Johnson Jr. to claim his fifth victory of the season and 20th of his career. The NHRA Western Swing, an NHRA summertime tradition since 1989, begins in Denver, moves on through Sonoma and finishes in Seattle in a three-week stretch.

Beckman took his first Sonoma win with a final-round performance of 4.037 seconds at 310.63 mph in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger to pull away from Johnson near mid-track, whose Make-A-Wish Charger trailed with a 4.073 at 308.99.

Beckman, who defeated Tony Pedregon, Chad Head and Robert Hight to advance to the final, also received a 20-point bonus this weekend for setting the national E.T. record at 3.921 seconds.

“I feel like I have the best crew in drag racing right now,” said Beckman of his team which is led by crew chief Jimmy Prock. “Winning the race and being No. 1 qualifier and setting the national record is icing on top of icing on top of the cake. It couldn’t have been any better. I don’t think this weekend will sink in until I’m on the plane going to Seattle.”

Veteran tuner Prock said he was even blown away by how well the car ran all weekend.

“We race a lot, we live it and you don’t have many weekends like this,” said Prock, who worked with John Force Racing for 15 seasons before joining Don Schumacher Racing late last year. “We had an opportunity and we got off to an excellent start. That was an advantage right out the gate, we already had a three-second run on the board so we had an opportunity to go after it Friday night.”

Despite earning a near-perfect 147 of 150 available points during the weekend, Beckman still trails series leader Matt Hagan by 57 points. Hagan qualified second and lost in the second round to runner-up Johnson Jr.

Antron Brown

In Top Fuel, Brown claimed his fourth win of the season and 51st of his career by outrunning first-time finalist Dave Connolly. Brown took his fourth Sonoma win by powering to a final round effort of 3.787 at 320.74 in his Matco Tools dragster and crossing the finish line just in front of former Pro Stock racer Connolly, whose C&J Energy Services dragster clocked a 3.808 at 319.14.

The win was former Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Brown's 35th in Top Fuel, a mark that ties him with the legendary "Big Daddy" Don Garlits.

“That’s a true, true blessing,” said Brown, who outran Steve Chrisman, Richie Crampton and Tony Schumacher en route to the final. “When I grew up in this sport, everybody knew who ‘Big Daddy’ was. What got me interesting in the sport was seeing him blowover in ’86 at Englishtown. I said, man, he’s crazy, but he got back in that car and did it again but ended up winning the championship that year. We have a unique relationship. To tie one of the greatest racers in history is unbelievable, but it hasn’t sunk in. It won’t sink in until I leave this sport, because I’m still hungry.”

Semifinalist Schumacher remained in the series points lead in his U.S. Army dragster, 37 in front of Brown.

Texas native McGaha earned his first career Pro Stock victory by racing past Jonathan Gray in the final round. McGaha powered his Harlow Sammons Racing Chevy Camaro to a 6.531 at 212.13 to hold off Gray’s Gray Manufacturing Camaro, which trailed with a 6.560 at 211.03.

Chris McGaha

McGaha, who was a runner-up in his two previous finals, defeated V. Gaines, Erica Enders and Jeg Coughlin Jr. in the first three rounds.

“This has been 30 years in the making,” McGaha said. “All those years that my dad [Lester] ran in Comp and with me in Pro Stock. There were plenty of times when we’d leave the house and think, ‘Maybe this is the week.’ My dad came close a few times, and we had a few heartbreakers along the way. This takes the monkey off my back. I really want more, but if I only get one of these [Wally trophies], I can live to be content with that."

Greg Anderson maintained the series points lead, 47 in front of Erica Enders. McGaha remained in fourth, but cut his deficit to the leader to 210 points.

Eddie Krawiec

Krawiec, who also won the NHRA Pro Bike Battle on Saturday, earned his second consecutive Pro Stock Motorcycle win of the season and 29th of his career by riding past Jerry Savoie at the finish. Krawiec rode his Screamin' Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to his second consecutive victory and third overall at this event with a performance of 6.881 at 191.00 to hold off Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki, which finished in 6.891 at 194.13.

Krawiec said even though the bikes don't race in Seattle, and aren't a part of the official Western Swing, he decided to celebrate his own unique trifecta anyway.

“We took a picture with a broom because this is sort of our mini-swing,” Krawiec said. “I was fortunate to win in Denver, and yesterday we won the [Pro Bike] Battle and today won Sonoma. That’s a good run for our Harley team. What sets this track apart is that this is one of the best surfaces we run on."

Krawiec defeated Angie Smith, Steve Johnson and Scotty Pollacheck en route to the final. He increased his series points lead to 106 over second place Hector Arana Jr.

“I give a lot of credit to my crew chief, Matt Hines, and everyone at Vance & Hines," Krawiec said. "They took an outsider and turned him into a race winner and a champion. Matt is a very unique individual. He is a thinker, and the way I look at it, he has [97] wins because all of my wins, all of Drew’s [teammate Andrew Hines] wins, and all of his wins count the same because he was a part of them.”

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues next weekend, Aug. 7-9, with the final stop of the Western Swing at the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Pacific Raceways near Seattle.

SATURDAY - KRAWIEC EARNS NHRA PRO BIKE BATTLE VICTORY AND TOP QUALIFYING POSITION IN PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE

Beckman sets provisional national record; Brown and McGaha also earn No. 1 qualifying positions at NHRA Sonoma Nationals

Eddie Krawiec raced to victory in the NHRA Pro Bike Battle Saturday at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.

Krawiec, who earned $7,500 for the win in the all-star bonus race featuring the eight quickest riders from the last year, also took the No. 1 qualifying position in the two-wheel category at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event. It is his second No. 1 of the season and 25th of his career.

In other racing, Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Antron Brown (Top Fuel) and Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) also earned No. 1 qualifying positions at Sonoma Raceway and will lead their classes into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

Krawiec defeated Scotty Pollacheck and Jerry Savoie in the first two rounds of the Pro Bike Battle and claimed the win on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson when teammate Andrew Hines turned on the red-light in the final round.

“I was a little surprised that Drew red-lighted,” Krawiec said. “I actually expected him to cut the Tree down. I thought he’d be .20 or better but he said he changed way he held the [clutch] lever and we know what happens when you change your routine. His bike has come around a little and so has mine.”

Series points leader Krawiec, who won at Denver last week from the No. 1 qualifying position, hopes to keep his streak of successful runs going tomorrow when he opens eliminations against Angie Smith.

“Everyone knows we’ve struggled a bit this year and it took a lot of hard work to get down this road,” said three-time world champ Krawiec. “We ran well but we weren’t consistent. Before Denver, we went to a test session because we just didn’t know where to look. Now, we do. I can’t thank Matt [Hines, crew chief] and the rest of the Vance & Hines team enough. We have a great bike for tomorrow and I hope we can repeat what we did today.”

No one in Funny Car was able to improve on Beckman’s jaw-dropping 3.921-second run from Friday. However, Beckman was able to run quick enough on the day’s final attempt to certify his 3.921 as the provisional national record, which comes with a 20-point bonus if he can hold on to it through the end of the event. It was Beckman’s second No. 1 of the season and 12th of his career. He will open eliminations against Tony Pedregon.

Beckman ran as a single in the final qualifying session after teammate Matt Hagan’s machine broke on the starting line. Beckman powered his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T to an impressive run of 3.958 at 318.84 in the heat of the day. The 3.958 gave Beckman the 1 percent back-up he needed for the record.

“I think it’s bitchin to be the quickest Funny Car driver in the world, but I want the trophy at the end of the day,” Beckman said. “The national record is for the crew chiefs. If we can win tomorrow I think that’s one that over time would be looked upon as domination. If you can qualify No. 1, set a national record and convert that to the trophy that is one for the history books.”

Series points leader Hagan qualified second and will race Paul Lee, while 16-time champ John Force qualified third and will face John Hale in the opener.

In Top Fuel, Brown claimed his fifth No. 1 of the season and 42nd of his career with his track record performance of 3.707 at 326.95 in his Matco Tools dragster. Brown will go for his fourth win of the season in a first-round matchup with Steve Chrisman.

“The run we just made gears you up for the first round tomorrow,” Brown said. “It gives you a great deal of confidence going into tomorrow, but you have to remember it’s nitro  and anything can happen with these cars. We have to be poised and execute the best we can to get by the first round. The car ran some great e.t.’s today, and at no point was it in trouble. I have all the confidence in the world in my team. I need to do my job to keep it in the groove and have a good reaction time. If we all work to the best of our abilities, we have a chance at winning the race tomorrow.”

Dave Connolly qualified second and will race Terry McMillen and J.R. Todd will face Jenna Haddock in the three versus 14 bracket.

In Pro Stock, McGaha earned his fourth No. 1 qualifying position of the season with his Friday track record time of 6.499 at 212.36 in his Harlow Sammons Racing Chevy Camaro. McGaha will meet V. Gaines in round one as he remains in hot pursuit of his first career victory.

“We got a lot of data today that was very helpful because this was more like race day,” McGaha said. “The weather was a bit worse so we didn’t have to tone it down too much. When you make those late [night] runs on its fun, but it’s mostly throwaway information. As a rule, the Pro Stock guys are good at adapting to the track. Very seldom do we have problems unless the conditions change when we’re in the lanes. That happens occasionally but we had a good handle on it today.”

Defending event winner Jason Line qualified second in his Summit Racing Camaro and will race rookie Aaron Strong in the first round. Series points leader Greg Anderson, a four-time Sonoma winner, qualified third and will meet rookie Alex Laughlin in round one.

FRIDAY - BECKMAN, BROWN, MCGAHA AND KRAWIEC LEAD QUALIFYING AT SONOMA

Jack Beckman powered his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T to the quickest Funny Car run in NHRA history Friday as he raced to the qualifying lead at the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were leaders in their categories at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event just north of San Francisco.

Beckman and his crew, led by Jimmy Prock, took advantage of the cool sea-level conditions and posted a Sonoma Raceway track record with an incredible time of 3.921 seconds at 323.43 mph to take the top spot.

Beckman can certify the run as an NHRA national record by posting another run within one percent of that performance during the remainder of the weekend. The current national record is 3.965 seconds set by John Force in 2014 at Pomona, Calif.

“We’re in a wonderful position right now,” said Beckman, who will earn a 20-point bonus if he can set a national record. “I am the luckiest guy in a fuel coupe right now. The second session tomorrow should be good and that will be the one where we shoot for the national record. I think you will see several more threes tomorrow, definitely in the second session.”

Beckman, who earned his fourth win of the season last weekend in Denver and is second in the series standings, was quickest in both sessions with three-second runs. There were eight total three-second runs during the day, the most in a single day of qualifying, and there were two pair of side-by-side three second runs, a first in NHRA history.

Beckman’s teammate Matt Hagan, the current category points leader, qualified second at 3.967 with the fastest Funny Car speed in history, at 325.77 in his Mopar/Rocky Boots Charger. Force was third in his Blue Def Chevy Camaro SS with a 3.970 at 322.96. In the second session, Robert Hight and Alexis DeJoria became the first pair to clock side by side three second runs, with each running 3.974.

“The fans are getting a phenomenal show,” Beckman said. “I thought we had a chance to set a national record tonight, but I didn’t realize we were going to obliterate the thing.”

Brown raced to a track record time of 3.707 at 326.95 in his Matco Tools dragster to take the qualifying lead in Top Fuel. His time ties the fourth quickest run in history.

“We were definitely pushing and it’s always good when the car does what you want it to,” Brown said. “They backed it down a little. We wanted to go out there and make a good quality run. It was very aggressive at 60-foot. The car was on a really good run and she was moving. It feels good to put that number up on the board. To come out here and have two good runs in qualifying is a great start for this weekend.”

Dave Connolly qualified second with a 3.713 at 329.10 in his C&J Energy Services dragster and he was followed by J.R. Todd, who posted a 3.724 at 328.30 in his Red Line Oil dragster. Denver winner Steve Torrence qualified fourth in his Capco Contractors machine with a 3.732 at 325.61.

McGaha posted a track record time of 6.499 at 212.36 in his Harlow Sammons Racing Chevy Camaro to lead Pro Stock qualifying.

“We figured someone could run a .49 here, but I didn’t know it would be us,” McGaha said. “I honestly thought we might be able to run 6.50 or 6.51, and I wasn’t sure if that would be enough.”

Jason Line was second with a 6.507 at 212.26 in his Summit Racing Camaro and his teammate, series points leader Greg Anderson, sits third with a 6.507 at 212.16 in his Summit Camaro. Defending world champ Erica Enders is ninth in her Elite Motorsports Camaro with a 6.534 at 212.03.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, series points leader Krawiec took the top spot with a 6.843 at 194.27 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson.

“We had a headwind all day, so that hurt us a bit,” Krawiec said. “On Q1, we made a good, clean run, but I had to correct the bike quite a bit. We went back, made an axle adjustment, and came out and ran that 6.84, but even that run was nowhere near perfect.”

Hector Arana Jr., who led the first session, sits second with a 6.867 at 194.38 on his Lucas Oil Buell. Andrew Hines is third on his Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson, with a 6.885 at 191.10.

Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at 1:10 and 4:15 p.m. for Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations.
