MONDAY - KALITTA, HIGHT AND BUTNER EMERGE VICTORIOUS AT LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

The season-opening event of the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series concluded Monday at the 59th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Bo Butner (Pro Stock) were victorious in their respective categories at the first of 24 events during the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

Kalitta took home the Top Fuel victory with a 4.014-second pass at 269.29 mph in his Mac Tools dragster to defeat defending world champion Steve Torrence in the final round. Kalitta defends his Winternationals crown after winning the season-opening event last season as he now increases his career win total to 45.

“This place has always been very special for me,” Kalitta stated. “To have success here is more than you could imagine for me. We were fortunate to get by the Capco guys but we’re going to keep at it. We are really hungry, and we’ve got Rob (Flynn, crew chief) and Troy (Fasching, crew chief) doing just an awesome job. I’m just really proud of them.”

After qualifying in the seventh position, Kalitta took down Scott Palmer, Billy Torrence and Terry McMillen on the road to victory.

S. Torrence was the No. 1 qualifier for the event and defeated Steve Faria and Mike Salinas as he recorded his seventh consecutive final round appearance and 15th of his career.

Hight powered to the win with a run of 3.881 at 329.75 in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS to take down Jack Beckman. After finishing as the runner-up at the 2018 Winternationals, Hight emerged victorious at the season-opening event for the fourth time in his career.

“You look at the Funny Car class and I think its tougher this year than last,” Hight said. “To come out here and be the No. 1 qualifier and win the race, that’s quite an accomplishment for this team. We’re going to have to be on our game all year long.”

Hight sat atop of the category following qualifying and took down Terry Haddock, Bob Tasca III and team owner John Force en route to his 46th career win.

Beckman reached his first final round since Brainerd last season, after besting Phil Burkhart Jr., Cruz Pedregon and teammate Tommy Johnson Jr.

In Pro stock, this was a rematch of the 2018 Winternationals. Butner defended his event title against teammate Jason Line after driving to a 6.522 at 211.59 run in his Jim Butner’s Auto Chevrolet Camaro. He locked in his eighth career victory.

“We were really struggling during qualifying,” Butner stated. “I definitely feel like we had the best car all four rounds today. I feel like we have a great car and team this year and I’m looking forward to keep going. We’re going to try and win them and the KB Racing team is as strong as ever.”

Butner entered eliminations third in qualifying before taking down Alan Prusiensky, Chris McGaha and two-time world champion Erica Enders.

The 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continues with Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park Feb. 22-24.

SATURDAY - HIGHT, S. TORRENCE AND BROGDON NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT SEASON-OPENING LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

Robert Hight sits atop of the Funny Car class following qualifying Saturday at the 59th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Rodger Brogdon (Pro Stock) are also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the first of 24 events on the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Hight’s second qualifying run of 3.871-seconds at 329.67 mph from Friday evening in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro stood strong throughout Saturday’s qualifying efforts. After tallying three No. 1 qualifiers in 2018, he locked down his first of the season and 61st of his career.

“We are here to show these guys we know what we’re doing,” Hight stated. “The guys worked hard over the winter and found some things we did wrong during the Countdown. Testing went well and we’ve won here quite a few times and been No. 1 qualifier here before, so we normally are able to shine when it counts.”

Hight will face Terry Haddock in the first round of eliminations. Jack Beckman is second after running a 3.900 at 330.23 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Hellcat and faces Phil Burkhart Jr, while teammate Tommy Johnson Jr. is third with a 3.904 at 327.03 in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Hellcat.

Defending world champion, S. Torrence, paces the Top Fuel category with a run of 3.657 at 331.61 in his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster during his final pass of qualifying. After securing three top qualifying positions last year, S. Torrence notched the 20th of his career at the season-opener.

“We came here, and the dragsters weren’t where we wanted them to be,” Torrence said. “We made some changes this morning, learned from them and it played well for us during Q4. It’s really humbling and unique to be a world champion in a class that is the pinnacle of the sport and to come out and compete is just a dream for me.”

S. Torrence will race Steve Faria in a first round match-up. Billy Torrence is second after running a 3.662 at 326.79 in his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster and will race Cameron Ferre.

In Pro Stock, Brogdon took over the top spot after driving to a 6.522 at 212.03 run in his RBR Machine Chevrolet Camaro during the first qualifying pass of the day. He locked in his second career top qualifying position, his first since Gainesville 2011, and races Val Smeland in the first round of eliminations.

“I feel good and I’ve got a great team,” Brogdon stated. “We tested last week, and everything went really well. The Elite (Motorsports) bunch is incredible. I never really thought I could be No. 1, maybe top three with a good run, but I feel really good about this.”

Erica Enders qualified second with a 6.528 lap at 212.09 in her Melling Performance/Elite Motosports Chevrolet Camaro and defending event winner Bo Butner rounds out the top three with his run of 6.530 at 213.10, the top speed in the class during qualifying.

FRIDAY - S. TORRENCE, HIGHT AND ENDERS CURRENT NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT SEASON-OPENING LUCAS OIL NHRA WINTERNATIONALS

The 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season kicked off Friday and defending Top Fuel world champion Steve Torrence piloted to the category’s qualifying lead at the 59th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) are also provisional qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the first of 24 events on the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

Torrence leads the Top Fuel category with a run of 3.716-seconds at 330.07 mph in his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster posted during the first qualifying session of 2019. After remaining undefeated during the 2018 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship, he is looking for his first No. 1 qualifier of the season in hopes of continuing the streak.

“Really good run to come out of the trailer,” Torrence stated. “We had a really good test session out in Phoenix and to come out here and pick up where we left off last year was the plan. Being able to come out and do it is a whole different thing and so far we are doing well. We are just trying to keep with the momentum.”

Defending event winner Doug Kalitta is currently second in his Mac Tools dragster with his run of 3.716 at 326.87 and Scott Palmer is third with a 3.720 at 328.38.

Hight leads the Funny Car category with a run of 3.871 at 329.67 recorded during his second pass of the day in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS. He’s chasing the top position at the season-opener after wrapping up 2018 second overall in the points.

“Honestly, I thought the run was going to be in the top four,” Hight said. “I thought there were some other cars that were going to run equally as well so I didn’t think it was going to hold up. I feel like there’s more left in it and Jimmy Prock (crew chief) is pretty enthused about it.”

Defending Funny Car world champion J.R. Todd sits sixth currently after a 3.940 at 319.68 in his DHL Toyota Camry, while last year’s Winternationals winner Matt Hagan is eighth following his 3.971 at 323.19.

In Pro Stock, Enders currently holds the top spot after driving to a 6.528 at 212.09 in her Melling Performance/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro in the first qualifying pass of the day. She is seeking to secure her first No. 1 qualifying position of the season after locking in one in 2018.

“It’s huge to go No. 1 on day one at Pomona,” Enders stated. “We didn’t have many No. 1 qualifiers over the last couple of years, so we built a new race car this year. To come out here and just go low like that was pretty awesome.”

Bo Butner sits in the No. 2 spot after a 6.530 run at 213.10 in his Nitro Fish Chevrolet Camaro, while Rodger Brogdon will enter Saturday third in the qualifying order following his pass of 6.543 at 212.06.
