2019 NHRA ROUTE 66 NATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS

SUNDAY - JOHNSON, S. TORRENCE, KRAMER AND M. SMITH EMERGE VICTORIOUS AT JOLIET

Tommy Johnson Jr. piloted his Make-A-Wish Foundation Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Funny Car to victory for his first win since the Auto Club NHRA Finals in 2017 in an explosive final round at the 22nd annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Deric Kramer (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also winners in their respective categories at the ninth of 24 events during the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Johnson experienced an engine explosion just before crossing the finish line with a pass of 4.175-seconds at 229.86 mph. He defeated Robert Hight’s 4.438 at 202.55 to secure his 16th Funny Car win and second at Route 66 Raceway. On his way to victory he secured round wins against Paul Lee, teammate Matt Hagan and John Force.

“It felt good coming here,” said Johnson. "This is a track where we've had a lot of success. I think we've been in the finals four out of the last six years here. I'm not superstitious, but the way the weekend went, things just kept pointing to it. I felt good about it. I went up there for the final and really wasn't even nervous."

Hight defeated Jim Campbell, Cruz Pedregon and Jack Beckman before facing Johnson in the finals.

S. Torrence drove his Capco Contractors dragster to a fourth consecutive victory this season defeating Mike Salinas with a pass of 3.763 at 326.32 in the finals. He defeated Terry McMillen, Richie Crampton and Antron Brown en route to his 31st career win in Top Fuel and second at Route 66 Raceway.

“These are the kind of conditions that we really do well in,” said Torrence. “(Crew Chiefs) Richard (Hogan) and Bobby (Lagana) excel in track conditions that are not the best. This place is great, but it was hot; it was humid. It was a little tricky to navigate and they did an exceptional job. I’ve got a really good team, a really great group of guys. I know I say it time and time again, but they really are the reason for the success that we have.”

Top Fuel No. 1 qualifier Salinas beat Scott Palmer, TJ Zizzo and Doug Kalitta to reach the finals.

In Pro Stock, Kramer powered his American Ethanol Chevrolet Camaro to his first win of the season and third of his career when his pass of 6.532 at 210.70 defeated Erica Enders as she turned on the red light in the final round. He is only the third different winner in Pro Stock so far this season.

Kramer also turned on the win light against Rodger Brogdon, Matt Hartford and Alex Laughlin before facing Enders in the finals.

“It came down to not making any mistakes,” said Kramer. “That’s been our detriment basically ever since Brainerd last year. In Indy, through the countdown and even at the start of this year, we had more little mistakes. When you make mistakes, in this class, it’s so close, that you just can’t win.”

Enders defeated Val Smeland, team owner Richard Freeman and Greg Anderson.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, M. Smith became the third different category winner in the 2019 season with his run of 6.807 at 198.88 on his Elite Performance/DENSO Auto Parts/Stockseth EBR. He overcame Karen Stoffer’s .002 reaction time and run of 6.885 at 193.71 for his first win of the season.

“Our Red Rocket showed up,” said M. Smith. “This DENSO Spark Plugs motorcycle was on kill today. We made a little blooper second round and slowed up just a little bit, but all in all, we were the quickest bike every round today. I can’t say enough about my guys, my crew, Angie, everybody who helps us. We had a good day.”

M. Smith beat Steve Johnson (in a bye run), Angelle Sampey and his wife, Angie Smith, to secure his second consecutive win at Route 66 Raceway. Stoffer defeated Ryan Oehler, No. 1 qualifier Eddie Krawiec and Hector Arana, Jr. on the way to her first final round since 2015.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues to the Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals presented by Minties at Heartland Motorsports Park in Topeka, Kan. June 7-9.

SATURDAY - HIGHT, SALINAS, ANDERSON AND KRAWIEC SECURE NO. 1 QUALIFYING SPOTS AT ROUTE 66 NATIONALS

Robert Hight rocketed to the No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car on Saturday at the 22nd annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway.

Mike Salinas (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also the No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the ninth of 24 events during the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

After a lengthy weather delay, Funny Car points leader Hight powered to the top spot for the sixth time in 2019 and 66th time in his career with a run of 3.880-seconds at 334.24 mph during the final qualifying session in his Auto Club Chevrolet Camaro SS. Hight was 14th in qualifying before the impressive run during the fourth session, and will seek his fourth victory in 2019. The two-time world champion has two victories from the No. 1 spot this season.

Tommy Johnson Jr. moved to second during the final qualifying session with his 3.882 at 326.24, while Friday’s provisional No. 1 Ron Capps, who is seeking this third consecutive victory in 2019, finished third with a 3.882 at 325.53.

“The conditions were there tonight, and we gave it the power and it stuck,” Hight said. “It was a great run and I’m loving the conditions we’re going to have (Sunday). It’s awesome to come to Chicago and see a field like this. There are a lot of good cars here. Some didn’t make it, but for a while there we were wondering if it was going to be us. When you’re 14th going into the last session, it’s a little nerve-wracking.”

Top Fuel’s Salinas picked up his third No. 1 qualifier of 2019 and fourth in his career after his run of 3.693 at 328.30 from Friday in his Scrappers Racing dragster held up. In a strong field of 21 dragsters, Salinas was the only driver to reach the 3.60s. Antron Brown will start from second after going 3.715 at 328.14, while defending world champ and points leader Steve Torrence, who is after his fourth straight win this season, took the third spot with a run of 3.757 at 324.05.

“We do have a good program,” Salinas said. “I’m doing the same thing I was doing last year. The only difference is the people who are behind me now. They’re making this possible and I’m trying to do what they need me to do. The level we’re at now, it’s a different level than I’ve ever been. It’s pretty intense and it’s pretty amazing.”

In Pro Stock, Greg Anderson took over sole possession of third place in career No. 1 qualifiers in NHRA history with his 103rd after a run of 6.571 at 210.54 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. Anderson, who was previously tied with Bob Glidden for career No. 1 qualifiers, earned his first top spot of 2019, slipping past teammate Jason Line during the final qualifying session.

Line finished second with a 6.575 at 209.39, while Matt Hartford took third after going 6.585 at 206.76. Anderson will also be looking for his first win of the season on Sunday.

“That’s a huge number, no question about it,” Anderson said of his 103rd No. 1 qualifier. “Anytime you can go by one of Bob Glidden’s records, you better be proud of that. That’s pretty darn cool. This racetrack, I’ve always loved coming here. It’s a great Pro Stock track because every bit of power you can find you can apply to it. Tonight’s session was just a perfect running car. That’s great and now onto business (Sunday).”

Krawiec took his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and 45th in his career in Pro Stock Motorcycle thanks to his 6.801 at 198.79 from Friday on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Krawiec will be racing for his first victory of 2019 after watching teammate Andrew Hines win four of the first five events of the year. Defending world champion Matt Smith qualified second with a 6.819 at 200.00 and Hines sits third after a run of 6.835 at 197.62.

“I’ve got a great crew that’s behind me,” Krawiec said. “It’s just fun to come out here and have a great bike going into raceday. I’m just looking at making good, cleans laps because that’s what it’s going to take to win.”

FRIDAY - CAPPS, SALINAS, LINE AND KRAWIEC PROVISIONAL NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT THE ROUTE 66 NHRA NATIONALS

Funny Car driver Ron Capps landed the provisional qualifying lead Friday evening at the 22nd annual Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. Coming off of back-to-back wins, he is seeking his first No. 1 qualifier of the season.

Mike Salinas (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) are also provisional qualifying leaders in their respective categories for the ninth of 24 events on the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Capps paced the Funny Car category Friday evening with a run of 3.893-seconds at 326.00 mph in his NAPA Brakes Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.

“To go No. 1 in the first session and have it hold was pretty cool,” said Capps. “In the first run, I actually shut off about a car length early so it was on a little bit better run. Then in the next session, (Rahn) Tobler (crew chief) kept coming back and de-tuning it. In the end, he just made it so it would just go down the track.”

Salinas finished atop the qualifying order in Top Fuel with a 3.693 at 328.30 in the second qualifying session of the day. He will look for his third No. 1 qualifier of the season in his Scrappers Racing dragster. Antron Brown finished the day in second position after his pass of 3.753 at 320.74.

In Pro Stock, Line has a provisional lead in the category with his run of 6.582 at 207.56. He is looking for his second No. 1 qualifier of the season in his KB Racing, Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro. His KB Racing teammate Greg Anderson currently sits in the second qualifying position with a pass of 6.583 at 207.50.

Krawiec sits atop Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying on Friday evening after his pass of 6.835 at 196.87 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson Street Rod. Defending world champion Matt Smith follows in the second spot with his run of 6.837 at 198.32.

Qualifying continues for the Route 66 NHRA Nationals at 2:45 pm and 5:15 pm CT on Saturday.
