2019 NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS
SUNDAY - B. TORRENCE, HAGAN AND COUGHLIN JR. WINNERS AT THE MAGIC DRY ORGANIC ABSORBENT NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS
The second event of the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series concluded Sunday as Billy Torrence took home the Top Fuel victory at the 35th annual Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) were also winners in their respective categories at the second of 24 events on the 2019 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
B. Torrence emerged victorious with a run of 3.965-seconds at 326.40 mph in his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster to take down Leah Pritchett in the final round. After earning the No. 1 qualifier on Saturday, B. Torrence secured his second career victory.
“It’s just a blessing to be out here,” B. Torrence stated. “I’m trying not to choke up. The car ran great and they all worked so hard to keep a good car under me. Even Steve’s (Torrence) team came over to help them out and it was just outstanding.”
B. Torrence took down Terry Totten, Mike Salinas and rookie debut Jordan Vandergriff as he raced to his first win in 2019. Pritchett overcame Cameron Ferre, Terry McMillen and teammate Antron Brown en route to her first final round of 2019.
Hagan powered his Sandvik Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat to the Funny Car victory with a run of 3.890 at 325.06 to take down defending world champion J.R. Todd in the final round. This is his first victory of the season and third at the facility.
“For us, this win is huge with the new Hellcat body,” Hagan said. “Hats off to Dickie Venerables (crew chief). He won the race. He had a race car underneath me that was just going down the track every lap. We were able to put on a great show for our fans.”
Hagan qualified second on the weekend and defeated Phil Burkhart Jr., Shawn Langdon and Bob Tasca III, on his path to victory. Todd secured the No. 5 qualifying spot and took down Terry Haddock, Tommy Johnson Jr. and No. 1 qualifier Robert Hight as he reached his first final round of the season.
In Pro Stock, Coughlin drove to the winner’s circle with a 6.557 at 210.67 run in his JEGS.com/Elite Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro to defeat Matt Hartford in the final round. He secured his 62nd victory and 1000th round win of his career.
“I felt really good behind the wheel,” Coughlin stated. “We came out on top today and it feels great today to get our 1000th Pro Stock round win. Huge win today and I’m really looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Coughlin was the No. 7 qualifier as he was victorious against Greg Anderson, Alex Laughlin and teammate Erica Enders as he earned his first victory of the season. Hartford qualified No. 4 on the weekend and beat Val Smeland, Rodger Brogdon and Deric Kramer as he notched his second career final round.
The 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season continues at the 50th annual AMALIE Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway March 14-17 in Gainesville, Fla.
SATURDAY - B. TORRENCE, HIGHT AND BUTNER NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT THE MAGIC DRY ORGANIC ABSORBENT NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS
The 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continued Saturday as Robert Hight powered to the top of the Funny Car category at the 35th annual Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
Billy Torrence (Top Fuel) and Bo Butner (Pro Stock) are also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the second of 24 events on the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
Hight took over the top spot in the category during the final run of qualifying with a pass of 3.867-seconds at 329.91 mph in his Auto Club of Southern California Chevrolet Camaro SS. He secured his second No. 1 qualifier of the season and is seeking back-to-back victories.
“That was a fun run,” Hight stated. “I had my hands a little full at the other end since I was late with the chutes because I had to keep it off the wall. It was exciting from the step of the gas all the way to the end of the finish line. Jimmy Prock (crew chief) and Chris Cunningham (crew chief) have a really good handle on these cool and tricky conditions.”
Hight is set to face off against Jeff Diehl in round one of eliminations on Sunday. Matt Hagan sits second after a 3.881 at 323.43 in his Sandvik Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. The defending Funny Car champion J.R. Todd qualified fifth after a 3.911 at 321.35.
Ron Capps and 16-time world champion John Force will face each other for the 100th time during eliminations Sunday morning.
B. Torrence sits atop of the Top Fuel class after the final round of qualifying with a run of 3.667 at 328.46 in his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster. This is his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and second of his career.
“We’re going to do all that we can do to turn that green hat into a yellow one,” B. Torrence said. “It would be nice to pick up some momentum here, pick up a win and relish that for a few weeks. I have a super team; really two super teams. Steve’s (Torrence) team works on my car and prepares it. Whenever I come out I have a car that is capable of winning at anytime.”
He will go head-to head against Terry Totten in round one of eliminations on Sunday. Terry McMillen qualified second after a 3.695 at 330.96 in his AMALIE Motor Oil XTERMIGATOR dragster, while defending world champion Steve Torrence qualified 14th.
In Pro Stock, Butner took over the top spot after driving to a 6.522 at 211.46 run in his Jim Butner Auto Chevrolet Camaro during the first qualifying session of the day. He secured his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season after winning at the most recent event.
“Our Chevy Camaro has been pretty good since I came back out this season,” Butner stated. “This is just carrying over from Pomona because we didn’t chance a lot. I’m very happy and the momentum is going great.”
Butner matches up against Joey Grose in the first round of eliminations. Alex Laughlin is second in the qualifying order after 6.526 at 211.79, while Jason Line sits in the third spot.

FRIDAY - B. FORCE AND HAGAN LEAD QUALIFYING AT THE MAGIC DRY ORGANIC ABSORBENT NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS
Brittany Force is the current No. 1 qualifier for Top Fuel after only one qualifying session due to inclement weather at the Magic Dry Organic Absorbent NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
Matt Hagan (Funny Car) was also provisional No. 1 qualifier at the second event of 24 on the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.

I pedaled it and it hooked up and went down there so it was good practice. Tomorrow the sun is supposed to be out and hopefully we’ll get in two more.”
Jim Maroney is second after his American Flowtech dragster while Scott Palmer is third in his Magic Dry Organic Absorbent dragster.
Hagan leads qualifying with his run of 3.942 at 321.50 in his Sandvik Coromant Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. Hagan's lap was the fastest pass of the day. He is seeking his first No. 1 qualifier of the season and second of his career at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
John Force and the PEAK Chevrolet Camaro SS are second and Tommy Johnson Jr. is third in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat.
