2017 NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS
SUNDAY - PRITCHETT, HAGAN AND ANDERSON WIN AT NHRA ARIZONA NATIONALS
Leah Pritchett repeated as the Top Fuel winner at the 33rd annual NHRA Arizona Nationals on Sunday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
Matt Hagan (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) were also winners in their respective categories at the second of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events.
For the second consecutive year Pritchett defeated Brittany Force in the finals. Pritchett’s 3.705-second pass at 328.22 mph in her Papa John’s Pizza dragster earned her the third victory of her career, second of the season and second at the NHRA Arizona Nationals. Force raced to a 3.704 at 330.39 in her Monster Energy dragster losing to Pritchett on a holeshot.
“I’m learning to do what it takes to get into that extreme, severe mindset of what it takes to do what we’re doing,” said Pritchett who won the season opening event at Pomona, Calif. “Honestly I’m trying to keep up with my team for how well they’re doing and make them proud of me as a driver and do the job that is expected of a Don Schumacher racing team and I think we’re doing pretty okay with that. We’re blessed with the equipment and the talent capabilities of the people and everyone that it takes to make it. I’m happy I can hold up my end of the bargain.”
It is the first time a Top Fuel pilot has won the first two races of the season since Gary Scelzi in 1997. Pritchett was the No. 1 qualifier at the event and set the elapsed-time national record with a 3.658 pass in qualifying.
Pritchett outran Clay Millican and Shawn Reed en route to the win while Force faced-off against Terry McMillen, three-time and reigning world champion Antron Brown and eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher before falling to Pritchett in the finals.
Hagan won his second consecutive Funny Car race to remain undefeated in the 2017 season. Hagan’s 3.878 at 330.88 in his Sandvik Coromat Dodge Charger R/T bettered reigning world champion Ron Capps’ 3.883 at 330.88 in the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T.
“It’s just great. We got ourselves a hotrod right now,” Hagan said. “The car is running strong. My lights are on point right now. I’m just feeling it, feeling this race car, this race team. We’re just digging. Everybody is working hard. The car is going down the race track every lap. How much more could you ask for. It’s a great feeling to crawl in the car knowing that you have the confidence that it’s going to run strong and then when your lights are good it’s a real hard combination to beat.”
Hagan has two wins at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, the first coming in 2015. He raced Cruz Pedregon, 2016 race winner Tim Wilkerson and No. 1 qualifier of the event Tommy Johnson Jr. on his way to the winner’s circle. Capps defeated Jeff Arend, Gary Densham and Jim Campbell.
In Pro Stock, Anderson raced his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to a 6.547 at 211.43 to defeat Drew Skillman and his Ray Skillman Auto Group Chevy Camaro’s 6.565 210.50 for the 87th victory of his career and second at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park. It was Anderson’s 140th final round.
“It was brutal today, but I knew it was going to be coming in,” Anderson said. “The class is awesome right now. I think every race I had today was decide by less than a foot. You just don’t get better racing than that. It’s fantastic out there. It’s just a battle royale every time you stage the car. Anybody can win and that’s what it’s all about. ”
Anderson defeated Kenny Delco, Shane Gray and rookie Tanner Gray in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectfully. Skillman got past Anderson’s KB Racing teammate and reigning world champion Jason Line as well as veteran Jeg Coughlin.
The 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season continues with the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville, Fla. March 16-19.
JOHNSON JR., PRITCHETT AND LINE ARE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS SATURDAY AT PHOENIX
Tommy Johnson Jr. set the Funny Car track elapsed-time record to secure the No. 1 qualifier position at the 33rd annual NHRA Arizona Nationals on Saturday at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
Leah Pritchett (Top Fuel) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) were also No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the second of 24 events on the 2017 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule.
Johnson Jr. powered his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T to a 3.837-second pass at 329.10 mph during the final qualifying session for the 15th No. 1 qualifier of his career.
“We did some things on that run that we wouldn’t normally do,” Johnson Jr. said. “It definitely worked. We knew the conditions were good. I could tell during the run that the car was a bunch better. You could feel it in there that it pulled really well early in the run so I knew it was a good one. We went up with no expectations but I felt pretty confident going in there. (Crew chief John Collins) saw something in there that he wanted to try.”
Johnson Jr. will race Phil Burkhart Jr. in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday. Courtney Force qualified second with a 3.838 at 332.67 in her Advanced Auto Parts Chevy Camaro and will line up against Jim Campbell and reigning world champion Ron Capps is third in the NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T.
Pritchett held onto the top spot in Top Fuel with her national record run on Friday. The 3.658 pass at 329.34 in her Papa John’s Pizza dragster is her third career No. 1 qualifying pass, second this season.
“We are still figuring this race car out,” Pritchett said. “It seems like we have it under control from the numbers that we lay down. But we’re starting to get outside that box a little bit to see how big our window is. My main focus as a driver has been to be 100% dead straight, dead square because if this car washes out I’m not going to be able to steer it or get it down the track.”
Three-time and defending world champion Antron Brown is qualified second with a 3.667 run at 328.78 in his Matco Tools dragster and will face Steve Chrisman in the first round and eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher is third with the U.S. Army dragster.
In Pro Stock, Line earned the 51st No. 1 qualifier of his career with a 6.509 pass at 212.19 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro during qualifying on Friday.
“It was a good time Friday and we didn’t feel like anyone was going to go faster than that,” Line said. “It was a time to try to learn some new stuff and try to get ready for tomorrow (Sunday). The track is good when it is cold, and you will see some really good racing tomorrow.”
Line will match up against Val Smeland in the first round of eliminations. Summit Racing Equipment teammate Greg Anderson is in second and will face Kenny Delco and rookie Tanner Gray remained third in his Gray Motorsports Valvoline Chevy Camaro.
Eliminations at the 33rd annual NHRA Arizona Nationals begin Sunday at 11 a.m. Catch the action on FOX Sports 1 at 6 p.m. ET.

FRIDAY - PRITCHETT SETS NATIONAL RECORD; C. FORCE AND LINE LEAD QUALIFYING AT PHOENIX
Leah Pritchett set the Top Fuel elapsed-time national record with her second session pass during the 33rd annual NHRA Arizona Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park on Friday.
Courtney Force (Funny Car) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) were also the provisional No. 1 qualifiers in their respective categories at the second of 24 events on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.
Pritchett’s 3.658-second pass at 329.34 mph in her Papa John’s Pizza dragster during the second round of qualifying puts her at the top of the field heading into the final two session of qualifying on Saturday.
“To be behind the wheel of this machine that is constantly putting out time and time again fast numbers and quick numbers is, to be honest, a little bit difficult to comprehend,” said Pritchett who is coming off a win at the season opening event in Pomona, Calif. “It’s everything that dreams are made of. It’s almost too good to be true, but it’s not. Seeing the extra attention to detail that I’ve never seen before and, I’ve been around a lot of crews in my life, it’s paying off on the track so well and so much.”
Don Schumacher Racing teammates Tony Schumacher in his U.S. Army dragster is second with a 3.667 pass at 323.89, the third quickest run in NHRA history, and reigning world champ Antron Brown in his Matco Tools dragster, are in third after a 3.689 pass at 326.56. Rookie Troy Coughlin Jr. is in fourth after running a career best 3.696 in the SealMaster dragster.
Force set both ends of the Funny Car track record with her 3.838 pass at 332.67 in her Advanced Auto Chevy Camaro during the first session.
“It’s always that first run of the weekend that you’re always the most nervous about,” Force said. “To be able to lay down a number like that for a track record and having (Matt) Hagan right out my window, I knew it was going to be a great pass. We ran killer numbers here during testing, that’s going to be our goal to be able to do it here again this weekend.”
Hagan is in the second position with a 3.839 at 329.67 in his Sandvik Coromant Dodge Charger R/T and Tim Wilkerson, who won the event last year, is in third with a 3.852 run at 329.42 in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang.
Line raced to a 6.509 at 212.19 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro for the Pro Stock leading qualifier position.
“This off season was much different than last,” Line said. “This year was about refining the recipe. And we did and it’s paying dividends for us right now. That was a really nice run. The track was really good here. No matter what tomorrow brings I’m going to have fun driving (the car).”
Line took the top spot from Summit Racing Equipment teammate Greg Anderson who had a 6.522 at 211.73 in the second session. Rookie Tanner Gray is currently qualified third with a 6.538 at 211.79 in his Gray Motorsports Valvoline Chevy Camaro.
Qualifying at the 33rd annual NHRA Arizona Nationals will continue Saturday at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
