2016 SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NHRA NATIONALS - NORWALK RESULTS

SUNDAY - CAPPS, LANGDON, LINE AND KRAWIEC RACE TO WINS AT NORWALK

Ron Capps continued his mid-season dominance with his fourth Funny Car win of 2016 at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.

Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners of the 12th NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events of the season in Norwalk, Ohio.

Capps raced his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T to a winning pass of 3.956 seconds at 317.49 mph to the losing run of Courtney Force at 4.010 at 314.17.  This is his third win in four races, he has a commanding 130 point lead over Force who is second and credits his Don Schumacher Racing team for the success.

“What Rahn Tobler (crew chief) is doing right now is hard work,” Capps said. “This guy has been working his tail off. It is big picture to him, he is not just a good crew chief, he is a good racer and I love that.  When he is pointing at me in the windshield before a run, it gives me all the confidence in the world.”

With the win, the 49th of his career, he ties legendary racer Don Prudhomme for 11th on the all-time NHRA win list. Capps is a former driver of ‘The Snake’ and continues to admire the pioneer of the sport.

“He was my hero growing up,” Capps continued. “These wins happen and you are told you have tied someone you are completely enamored with growing up, so when you are mentioned like that it blows me away. It doesn’t seem possible, to be mentioned with someone like Snake is crazy.”

Langdon, a DSR teammate to Capps, piloted his Red Fuel dragster to his second consecutive win of the year when he bested J.R. Todd in the final. His winning run of 3.846 at 319.75 to the losing effort of Todd at 3.937 at 285.05 earned Langdon his 13th career Top Fuel victory. Langdon defeated Troy Buff, Antron Brown, Brittany Force as well as Todd for the win. Langdon had fortune on his side in the first round when Buff red-lighted giving Langdon the automatic win while his dragster lost traction early in the run.

“I think we are starting to see a little luck go our way, we really should have been out first round,” Langdon stated. “We were just fortunate Troy Buff redlit and we went back and looked at everything and couldn’t find out why it did what it did. We went back to what we did in qualifying on Saturday with a hot weather tune up. We were able to put together three good straight runs and felt like we had a very strong car today.”

In Pro Stock, Line faced his teammate and No. 1 qualifier Greg Anderson in the final. Line, in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro, had the early advantage off the starting line and held off Anderson for his seventh win of the season. Line had a winning pass of 6.678 at 208.42 to Anderson’s trailing run of 6.717 at 208.36. Line defeated Curt Steinbach, Erica Enders-Stevens, and Vincent Nobile en route to his final round match up with Anderson.

“It was a hard today, it was very hot out there,” said Line. “We didn’t run as well as we would have liked today and there were cars that were very close to us. They are getting closer and to win at the Summit race, in a Summit Car, at a Summit track is a huge deal. Greg and I have been very fortunate to make that happen a bunch of times, it’s fun.”

Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Krawiec, won his third race of 2016 when he defeated his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson teammate Andrew Hines in the final. Krawiec, who was also the No. 1 qualifier, had the winning run of 6.926 at 194.72 to defeat Hines who covered the distance at 6.937 at 193.29. His path to the win was eventful as he went off the end of the track into the sand trap following both his semifinal and final runs.

“We went back to the pit and had to take out 30 pounds of pea gravel,” said Krawiec. “We put new brake pads on it, checked the fluid, drained everything and made sure it was 100 percent. We stopped fine in the lanes and everything. I see my fourth round win light against my teammate and went ‘not again’. I pulled the clutch in and went in for a ride.”

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing will resume July 7-10 with the Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway, in Joliet, Ill.

SATURDAY - KALITTA, WORSHAM, ANDERSON, KRAWIEC RACE TO QUALIFYING LEADS AT NORWALK

Kalitta Motorsports drivers Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) and Del Worsham (Funny Car) swept the No. 1 qualifying positions in the nitro categories at their home track of Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio. This is the third time the team based in nearby Ypsilanti, Mich., has swept both categories.

Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) will also lead their respective categories into eliminations at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals, the 12th race of the 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

For Worsham, this is the first No. 1 qualifying position of the season and the 46th of his 540 race career. His elapsed time track record run of 3.875 seconds at 328.70 mph in his DHL Toyota Camry from Friday earned him the top position. Worsham’s Camry suffered minor damage when the parachutes failed to deploy in the final qualifying session and he went through the sand trap at the end of the track.

“The car made a great run but we came in with a new Toyota DHL Camry body on our car,” Worsham said. “We had a malfunction in the routing of the wiring of the cables from the levers to the parachutes and they failed. I swatted for them twice and when they didn’t deploy it was all I could do to get it stopped. Luckily the damage was minimal for what it could have been.”

Funny Car points leader Ron Capps qualified second and will face Jeff Diehl and Robert Hight, who qualified third, will race Brandon Welch when eliminations begin.

In Top Fuel, Kalitta, racing his Mac Tools dragster, retained the No. 1 qualifying position with the 3.719 at 327.51. This is the third No. 1 qualifying position of the season for Kalitta, he has four wins and is the category points leader.

“It will be interesting for tomorrow as it will get a little warmer so we will work that into our program,” Kalitta said. “Getting into the top half is real important and that is our goal every time, to get lane choice. Just real proud of my guys on this thing.”

Also in Top Fuel Antron Brown retained his No. 2 qualifying position and will face Luigi Novelli in the first round. Brittany Force will face Chris Karamesines as she aims for her third win of the season and Richie Crampton looks to improve on his season when he will battle Leah Pritchett.

Anderson powered to the Pro Stock No. 1 qualifying position on Friday in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro with a run of 6.565 at 211.26 and retained the top spot through the last two sessions. This is the fifth No. 1 qualifying position of the season for him and the 85th of his career. He will face Charlie Wescott, Jr. in the first round of eliminations.

“We are having a ball right now, having fun racing,” Anderson said. “I love every individual race we come to, I love to have a chance to win each race we come to. It means more to me than anything to hoist that Wally on a Sunday at any racetrack we go to.”

During qualifying at the 12th race of the season Anderson, who is second in the points, and teammate Jason Line, who is first, became the first racers to secure their berths into the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship.

“I didn’t think it could be done this early, job number-one is done, we are in the big show,” said Anderson, a four-time Pro Stock world champion. “The good news is we can try a few things and experiment, we can test a few thigs some of the other teams can’t.”

Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader Krawiec, on his Vance & Hines Screamin’ Eagle Harley-Davidson, secured his fourth No. 1 qualifying position in the first five races of the season with his run of 6.822 at 195.31 that he posted during the second round of qualifying on Friday evening. This is his 31st No. 1 qualifying position of his career, third at the event that he won in 2011. He will face Chip Ellis on Sunday.

“I think I have a very good bike going into tomorrow,” said Krawiec. “The biggest thing I have been struggling with here is, myself and my teammate, is just keeping up on the wind direction. It has been changing and for our motorcycles we really need to be on top of that, to make the proper chassis adjustments to go straight down the track. The knowledge and the data we have from today is going to help us tomorrow.”

His teammate Andrew Hines qualified second and will face Michael Phillips and Matt Smith who qualified third will face Michael Ray.

Eliminations begin for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals on Sunday at 11 a.m.

Top Fuel driver Doug Kalitta set a track elapsed time record and raced to the qualifying lead in the category on Friday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio.

Del Worsham (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock), and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also qualifying leaders in their respective categories at the 12th event of 24 on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Kalitta has two No. 1 qualifiers this year and is the Top Fuel points leader. His Kalitta Motorsports team is based in nearby Ypsilanti, Mich., and he is proud of the results at his home track.

“It is great to perform in front of our family and friends here and we have them all this weekend,” said Kalitta following the session. “That is the funnest thing, getting everyone here and rooting us on. We are pretty proud of that run. It is one of those Friday night runs you dream about having.”

Worsham, who has yet to earn a No. 1 qualifying position this year, posted a lap of 3.875 at 328.70 in his DHL Toyota Camry to set both a track record for elapsed time and speed. Worsham is the 2011 Top Fuel world champion, the 2015 Funny Car world champion and has one career win at the track.

“We have been spending a lot of races just getting ready and trying to make sure we have a setup that is good for Sunday,” said Worsham, who races for Kalitta Motorsports. “The first run today we kinda took a step back and made sure we made a good clean run. That allowed us to go out there tonight and the crew and the crew chief prepared the car to run what it ran. Fortunately it did.”

Anderson is the defending event winner and has three wins at the facility. He jumped from the 12th qualifying position to the lead after a disappointing first attempt.

“We set the bar low the first run and we looked like a hero tonight,” said Anderson. “Race track is killer right now and you do what you can. This was fun out here tonight. The fans love to see that and we made the most of it.”

Jason Line, teammate to Anderson and the Pro Stock points leader, is second at 6.569 at 211.00.

Krawiec, who has two wins this season and is the current Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader, took the qualifying lead with a pass of 6.822 at 195.31 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. The three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champion has three No. 1 qualifying positions this season.

“Nice clean, straight run down the raceway here and that is what you have to do with the competition level in the Pro Stock Motorcycle category,” said Krawiec. “My teammate (Andrew Hines) came up and gave me a little fist bump and said ‘go to the top for the pole’. He helped me out and gave me a little confidence there.”
