2016 NHRA WINTERNATIONALS - EVENT RESULTS

CAPPS, TORRENCE AND ANDERSON ARE WINNERS AT SEASON-OPENING WINTERNATIONALS

Ron Capps raced to his first Funny Car victory in nearly a year Sunday at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also were winners at the season-opening NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event near Los Angeles.

Capps emerged from a strong performing field as the winner and had to defeat defending world champion Del Worsham in the final round to take his 46th career victory. He outran Jeff Diehl, Chad Head and Robert Hight in early rounds.

In the final, Capps used a quicker reaction time and covered the distance in 3.981 seconds at 324.28 mph in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger to hold off the hard-charging DHL Toyota Camry of Worsham, which posted a quicker, but losing performance of 3.962 at 324.36.

It was the third Winternationals win for the popular San Diego driver who calls the historic Southern California track a second home.

“This is the most fabled track we go to and it’s the birthplace of drag racing; it is unbelievable to win here,” Capps said. “I can’t wait to get this season going. You wonder if you are ever going to see one of these [trophies] again. I am racing Del Worsham in the final, who is one of the best. We threw down. What a race. Just to know we can get in the circle and get another Wally feels good.”

In Top Fuel, red-hot Torrence powered to his first Winternationals victory and his sixth career win by outrunning Doug Kalitta in the final round. Torrence’s Capco Contractors dragster posted a 3.735 at 326.48 to edge Kalitta’s Mac Tools machine, which trailed with a 3.753 at 324.36.

Torrence, whose car has been running like a very consistent bracket dragster since pre-season testing last week in Phoenix, used a string of low 3.7-second runs to beat Steve Faria, Morgan Lucas, and Richie Crampton in the first three rounds. He saved his quickest run on Sunday for the final to beat Kalitta.

“[Tuning consultant] Alan [Johnson] and [crew chief] Richard [Hogan] have worked really well together,” said Torrence, who becomes the Top Fuel points leader for the first time in his career. “Alan is that thorn who keeps poking Richard to tune it just a little bit farther. My crew guys have done a great job. I am just the guy that sits in there and gets to drive it. It feels good. I wish the season was over already. We are going to do what we can to keep the momentum going and go on to Phoenix and try to write a story just like this one.”

Four-time world champ Anderson earned the first win in the new EFI Pro Stock era, holding off his teammate Jason Line in a photo-finish final round. Anderson also won by using a holeshot start and finished in 6.617 at 207.85 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to take the win over Line, whose 6.609 at 209.82 in his Summit Camaro wasn’t enough to make up for Anderson’s starting line advantage.

“I feel honored to be the first winner of the fuel injection era and get the first trophy,” said Anderson, who was the event’s No. 1 qualifier and advanced to the final with round wins over Matt Hartford, five-time champ Jeg Coughlin Jr. and last season’s top rookie Drew Skillman. With the win, he denied his teammate a third consecutive Winternationals trophy.

“I got a great light in the final and got it done,” Anderson said. “It was my day. I can’t tell you how proud I am of this Summit Racing team.  It is getting better every run. That’s going to pay off down the road. Everybody out there is in a steep learning curve right now. The other competitors in our class are going home and work hard and they will do better at Phoenix. We are going to have to buckle down and find something better again. Hopefully we will be better again come Phoenix.”

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues Feb. 26-28 at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park near Phoenix.

SATURDAY - BECKMAN, TORRENCE AND ANDERSON EARN NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS AT POMONA

Jack Beckman picked up right where he left off last season by racing to the No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car Saturday at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the season-opening event of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

Beckman, who failed to qualify at this event one year ago but then rallied to post seven wins and set the national record four times en route to challenging for the Funny Car world championship, continued to prove he has the quickest Funny Car in the pits. In the final qualifying pair he clocked a 3.888-second run at 326.16 mph to take his first No. 1 at the Winternationals and 16th of his career. He will open eliminations against John Hale.

“As a hometown guy it’s tough to come out to the first race of the year because there’s a little extra pressure to do well and some stress if you don’t, but we are beyond that,” Beckman said. “It’s clear that [crew chiefs] Jimmy [Prock], John [Medlen] and Chris [Cunningham] are getting a handle on this car. When you see them getting that close you know great things are in store for this team.”

Beckman finished second to eventual world champion Del Worsham last season when Worsham’s DHL Toyota team got hot in the playoffs and won four of the six Countdown events. However, the competition and performance in Funny Car has been elevated largely due to the strides first made by Beckman in his Prock-tuned machine. He understands that there are several cars out here who can win the championship and he and his team will need to be focused to get the job done.

“It’s an exciting time to be a fan of the sport and it’s an exciting time to be a participant,” Beckman said. “We came so close and didn’t get the ultimate prize. I don’t think we need to do anything differently. Del was just spectacular in the Countdown and it worked against us. Any other season we would win the championship by 10 rounds. I’m 49 and at that age you look at things a little differently. Maybe I am a little more motivated to bring my A-game every time out here.”

Beckman’s teammate Ron Capps is second in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger with a 3.902 at 324.51 and Friday leader Robert Hight qualified third with a 3.913 at 322.04 in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro. Hight has an intriguing matchup as he will face No. 14 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr., whose Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger was the talk of pre-season testing but has struggled this weekend, posting a best of 4.256 at 225.22.

In Top Fuel, Torrence powered to his sixth career No. 1 qualifying position and his first ever at Pomona, clocking a 3.703 at 328.06 in his Capco Contractors dragster. He will open eliminations against nitro journeyman Steve Faria.

“We weren’t holding anything back,” Torrence said. “The conditions were the best we’ve seen this weekend so we said why not go for it. We’ve got a really good hot rod right now and I just want to do my job and hopefully we can walk away from here tomorrow with one of those little gold men.”

With noted nitro tuning expert Alan Johnson on board as a consultant, Torrence had one of the quickest and fastest cars during last week’s pre-season testing in Phoenix. Now with his qualifying effort and by posting four solid runs during qualifying, Torrence and his team are very confident heading into Sunday’s eliminations.

“I am hoping this translates into a good performance tomorrow and we can keep this momentum going,” Torrence said. I feel like we’ve got something to prove. We need to maintain consistency, keep the car running well and stay on top of it. Bringing Alan into the mix has brought us credibility. It makes the morale and confidence of the team a lot better. I am just a hillbilly country kid that’s out here living a dream and enjoying getting to do what I love to do. We are driving a race car for a living. You have to just take everything with a grain of salt and enjoy it. Not everybody gets to live their dream as a job.”

Doug Kalitta qualified second in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.713 at 324.51 and Friday leader Tony Schumacher is third with a 3.722 at 323.66. Defending world champ Antron Brown will start seventh in his Matco Tools dragster with a 3.754 at 322.73 and face 2013 champ Shawn Langdon, who qualified 10th with a 3.764 at 320.97 in his Red Fuel dragster.

Anderson earned his 81st career No. 1 qualifying effort in Pro Stock with a performance of 6.585 at 209.62 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. It is Anderson’s sixth No. 1 at the Winternationals and he will go for his sixth win at this event tomorrow when he faces Matt Hartford in the opening round.

“When you come to the Winternationals you are scared to death about the competition,” Anderson said. “This year with all the changes we were incredibly scared not knowing where everybody was. It’s been a learning curve for everyone and a steep one. To be where we are at right now versus the first time we put an engine on the dyno, we’ve come a long way. Feel fantastic. I knew when we changed the rules and I might’ve shed a tear or two. Right now I am able to forget about it and move on and embrace the challenge and learn to like EFI. I hate to say it, but I am learning to like it.”

Anderson, who won four world championship titles in the old Pro Stock configuration, says he’s looking forward to becoming the first to win under the new rules format for the factory hot rods, which features electronic fuel injection, 10,500 RPM rev limiters, no hood scoops and shortened wheelie bars.

“To qualify one, two and three in our three KB Racing cars, that’s quite an accomplishment,” Anderson said. “The car is probably more friendly to drive than it used to be. They are safer to drive and a little easier to tune. I think when you fast forward three months you will see competition that is tighter than ever in the Pro Stock ranks.”

Jason Line qualified second with a 6.592 at 210.14 in his Summit Camaro and Friday’s top qualifier, Bo Butner, will start third in his Camaro with a 6.594 at 209.30. Defending world champ Erica Enders qualified ninth in her Mopar/Elite Motorsports Dodge Dart, with a 6.651 at 207.88 and will face her teammate in the first round, Jeg Coughlin, who qualified eighth at 6.645 at 208.55 in his Dart.

FRIDAY - SCHUMACHER, HIGHT AND BUTNER RACE TO QUALIFYING LEAD AT POMONA

Tony Schumacher raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel Friday at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

Robert Hight (Funny Car) and Bo Butner (Pro Stock) also were qualifying leaders in their respective classes at the season-opening NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

Eight-time world champion Schumacher was quickest in Top Fuel with a 3.722 second run at 323.66 mph in his U.S. Army dragster.

“The second run was a good run,” said Schumacher, a two-time winner of the tradition-rich Winternationals. “We got the number one spot and earned a few points and I am proud of the guys. It’s a good start. I am excited and my crew chief [Mike Green] is excited. Everything is looking great. I’ve been blessed to drive a race car for a living. I think we’ll go faster.”

Schumacher edged Clay Millican for the top spot late in the second round of qualifying. Millican was second with a 3.746 at 324.36 and Richie Crampton sits third in his Lucas Oil dragster with a 3.748 at 322.65. Brittany Force led after the first session with a 3.753 at 319.98 in her Monster Energy dragster.

Schumacher, who posted a 3.68-second run during last weekend’s NHRA Nitro Spring Training at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park near Phoenix, had one of the quickest and most consistent cars during the four-day pre-season test session. That gives he and his entire U.S. Army team a lot of good vibes going into the 2016 campaign.

“We tested last week in Phoenix and ran in the 60s,” Schumacher said. “We had different conditions there and it’s warmer here, so we have to make adjustments. Our guys worked hard in the two month offseason. We had to make a change. We had to change substantial stuff in our clutch. We’ve got really smart guys. We have a core group of crew chiefs that do a great job. Now we have to see if it will carry over in all three [DSR Top Fuel] teams.”

Hight powered his Auto Club Chevy Camaro to a performance of 3.942 at 322.19 to take the qualifying lead in Funny Car. Hight, a three-time Winternationals winner, was pleased with effort right off the trailer.

“If you don’t get down the track on the first run you are usually behind the eight ball the whole weekend,” Hight said. “The whole Funny Car ballgame has changed in the last year. If you looked at Funny Car last year, this 94 I ran would’ve been a national record. As drivers, tuners and teams you have to adapt to that. You see all these teams running 80s last year. We weren’t competitive with the Beckmans and Worshams. At the end of the season last year we didn’t even have a chance to win the championship and that’s uncharted waters for us.”

Hight and the entire John Force Racing team is riding a lot of momentum entering this weekend after a strong showing during last weekend’s testing.

“In testing last weekend in Phoenix we showed that we are back in the game,” Hight said. “I am excited with testing and coming in here you know now that it’s not a fluke. We went in there and started knocking off 60-foot times. We put it all together and started running 80s. To come out here and run 94 the first run I am really impressed by [crew chief] Mike Neff and these guys. Not a better place to do it than right here in front of my sponsor.”

Hight’s teammate Courtney Force was second in her Traxxas Camaro with a 3.945 at 322.88 and defending world champion Del Worsham was third in his DHL Toyota Camry with a 3.950 at 323.04. Jack Beckman, who won seven times and set the national record four times in a runner-up points finish last season, was fourth overall in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger, posting a Friday best of 3.959 at 308.07.

Butner was quickest in the new-look Pro Stock category, powering his Jim Butner Auto Chevy Camaro to a 6.606 at 209.43. This season NHRA mandated new rules for the Pro Stock category, which includes electronic fuel injection, 10,500 RPM rev limiters, no hood scoops and shortened wheelie-bars.

“We kinda joked in the staging lanes earlier that the guy that will win this race is someone who can start the car, and stage every round,” Butner said with a smile. “Everybody will slowly get better. The guys at the shop make the best power. I’ve drove a lot of EFI cars and just when you think you have a handle on it, it will shut off. You have to calm down and not get frustrated. These guys are the smartest guys out here and they will figure it out.”

Butner, who is teaming with the KB Racing program, was followed in the qualifying order by his teammate Jason Line, a four-time Winternationals winner, who drove his Summit Racing Camaro to a 6.618 at 209.43. His other teammate, Greg Anderson, posted a 6.647 at 209.43 in his Summit Camaro.

“It will get a lot better and be a lot closer in the next three races,” Butner said. “I will assume we will run a high 58 or a 57. None of us have made a perfect run so far.”

Other top qualifiers in the factory hot rod category included third-place Chris McGaha, who clocked a 6.641 at 208.62 in his Harley Sammons of Odessa Camaro and five-time world champ Jeg Coughlin sits fourth in his Magneti Marelli/Elite/JEGS.com Dodge Dart with a 6.645 at 208.55.

Defending world champ Erica Enders is currently ninth in her Mopar Performance/Elite Motorsports Dart with a 6.660 at 208.68.

Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m.
