2016 NHRA SPRINGNATIONALS - HOUSTON RESULTS

SUNDAY - FORCE, KALITTA AND ANDERSON RACE TO VICTORY AT NHRA SPRINGNATIONALS

Courtney Force raced to her first Funny Car victory of the season Sunday at the NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway. It is the fifth consecutive NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event that has featured a female winner.

Doug Kalitta (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also were winners at the sixth of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events on the season.

Force posted a 3.913-second pass at 327.90 mph in her Traxxas Chevrolet Camaro SS to defeat No. 1 qualifier Tim Wilkerson, who powered his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang to a 3.943 at 323.81. This is Force’s eighth career win and first since 2014 in St. Louis. She now shares the Funny Car points lead with Wilkerson.

“It was a pretty amazing weekend for our Traxxas Chevy Camaro team,” Force said. “I was nervous going into the final against Wilkerson. I knew what kind of numbers he could put on the board and I knew I just had to be right there with him. We’ve been working really hard and I feel like this one felt even better than my first ever career win. We wanted it more than anything.”

Force defeated Bob Bode, Ron Capps and Tommy Johnson Jr. in the early rounds before facing Wilkerson in the final.

Wilkerson, a two-time 2016 event winner, battled past Jim Campbell and former world champions Matt Hagan and Jack Beckman to make it to the final round.

With Force’s victory, the NHRA Mello Yello Series has now seen four different female winners in the Nitro categories so far this season – the most in a single season in NHRA history.

Top Fuel winner Kalitta powered to his first victory of 2016 and third at the NHRA SpringNationals with a final round pass of 3.813 at 280.60 for a holeshot victory in his Mac Tools dragster over No. 1 qualifier Steve Torrence. Torrence, a Kilgore, Texas native and driver of the Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster, raced to a 3.810 at 306.81, but his slower reaction time proved to be the difference.

Kalitta, the defending and three-time event winner, earned his 39th career victory to tie Antron Brown and Kenny Bernstein for fourth on the Top Fuel all-time wins list.

“I actually didn’t realize I had won until I had gotten to the end and turned around and came back,” Kalitta said. “I was real happy. It’s good to get a win and get the momentum going. It just charges everybody up. It was just a really good day for us.”

Kalitta outlasted Terry Haddock, Kebin Kinsley and Phoenix winner Leah Pritchett in the earlier rounds.

Torrence had no easy route to the final round.  He sprinted past Rob Passey in the first, and then beat eight-time world champion Tony Schumacher and reigning world champ Brown in the second and third rounds, respectively.

With the win, Kalitta moved to second in points behind Brittany Force by jusy one point. Force, a two-time 2016 winner, made an early exit in the first round. Brown is third and Torrence is fourth.

This is the first time in NHRA history that sisters have led their respective Nitro category points standings.

In Pro Stock, Anderson won his third race of the season on a holeshot against Ken Black Racing teammate Jason Line. Anderson pushed his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to a 6.630 at 209.43 to defeat the point-leader’s 6.597 at 209.95 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. Anderson, who has three career wins at the SpringNationals, was also the No. 1 qualifier. The duo has combined to win the first six races of the 2016 season and share three victories apiece.

“It was a tremendous day today,” Anderson said. “I was having a ball today. I just kept wondering, ‘When’s it going to rain? When’s it going to rain? Please don’t because I feel great today.’ My car is great. My car was just a dream to drive every run and I knew I had a great chance today to win an event.”

Anderson, a four-time Pro Stock world champion, opened eliminations with a bye before defeating Vincent Nobile and Allen Johnson in the second round and semifinals, respectively. Anderson trails Line in the points standings by 79.

Two-time world champion Line extended final-round-appearance streak to six – racing for a Wally in every race so far this season. He defeated veteran V. Gaines in the opening round before he had a bye in the second and outlasting teammate Bo Butner in the semifinals.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues May 13-15 with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta.

Tim Wilkerson raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car at Royal Purple Raceway at the NHRA SpringNationals on Saturday.

“We’re excited about how the season has started, of course,” said Wilkerson. “Hopefully we can continue our string from Charlotte [last weekend] and not get beaten in any of the eliminations rounds. It’s been a great day and a great weekend so far. Going to try and cap it off tomorrow and bring home another Wally.”

This is Torrence’s ninth top qualifier of his career. Torrence, who won the season-opener in Southern California, will face Rob Passey in the opening round of eliminations.

“We’re showing off with some Texas boys doing good,” Torrence said, “I’m hoping this green hat doesn’t curse us tomorrow like it has the last two races. We‘re going to try and change our luck on Sunday. Go a couple rounds and see if we can leave here with a Wally.

“Everything has gone perfect in qualifying,” said Torrence, who despite having four top qualifiers this year has made three first round exits. “We haven’t been able to carry that into race day every time and kind of stumped our toe a few times.”

He will face the winner of the Vincent Nobile versus Alex Laughlin matchup in the second round.

FRIDAY - TORRENCE, WILKERSON AND ANDERSON LEAD QUALIFYING AT HOUSTON

Texas native Steve Torrence raced to the Top Fuel qualifying lead Friday at the NHRA SpringNationals, the sixth event of the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.

Tim Wilkerson (Funny Car) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) were also qualifying leaders in their categories at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston.

Torrence, winner of the season-opening Winternationals, piloted his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster to a track record 3.724-second pass at 329.42 mph during Friday’s second qualifying session. The Kilgore, Texas native is two sessions away from securing his fourth No. 1 qualifier of the season and third in-a-row.

“Houston is one of the racetracks I get to call home. It is really gratifying to be able to run well in front of the home town crowd and all the friends and family I’ve grown up racing with,” Torrence said. “Just have a lot of support here.”

Doug Kalitta is currently in the No. 2 spot, racing his Mac Tools dragster to a 3.743 at 324.36, while Clay Millican and his Parts Plus/Great Clips dragster sit in third with a matching time of 3.743 but slower speed of 323.12.

Two-time world champion Antron Brown and his Matco Tools dragster are in fifth and points leader Brittany Force is seventh in her Monster Energy dragster.

In Funny Car, Wilkerson set a career best and track record time of 3.899 at 327.59 in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang. Wilkerson, the 2004 SpringNationals winner, has two wins this season in Phoenix and Charlotte, N.C. and is hoping to earn his first No. 1 qualifier of the year.

“I’m pretty happy with that performance,” Wilkerson said. “I knew it was a pretty fast run because [the car] went out there in the middle of the track and really took off. Usually when it does that it’s marching pretty hard.”

Alexis DeJoria is second with a 3.910 at 324.90 in her Tequila Patron Toyota Camry and is trailed by Courtney Force and her Traxxas Chevy Camaro with a 3.915 at 320.66.

Defending world champion Del Worsham set the track record for speed with a 328.06 run in his DHL Toyota Camry and is currently in the fourth spot while current Funny Car points leader, Robert Hight, is in fifth.

In Pro Stock, Anderson powered his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to a 6.589 at 210.41. Anderson, eyeing his third No. 1 qualifier of the year, has two wins so far this season in Pomona, Calif. and Gainesville, Fla.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my guys and what they do with our race cars. It’s just a dream to drive right now,” said Anderson, a four-time Pro Stock world champion. “That run tonight was beyond what I thought we could run. That was pretty darn close to a perfect run. We usually get out of the car saying, ‘We did this wrong and we did that wrong,’ but I can’t pick anything apart on that run. It was a very, very nice run. Probably the nicest run I’ve had all year long.”

Anderson’s Ken Black Racing teammates Jason Line and Bo Butner currently sit in the second and third spots with a 6.602 at 209.92 and a 6.623 at 208.91, respectively.

Line and his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro have not qualified outside of second or missed a finals appearance so far this season.

Butner, in his Bill Butner Auto Chevy Camaro, will be racing for his first Pro Stock victory after finishing runner-up to Line two consecutive times in Charlotte and Las Vegas.

Two-time and defending world champion Erica Enders is in the sixth position. Enders will be racing for her third consecutive victory at Royal Purple Raceway.

The final two qualifying sessions of the NHRA SpringNationals will be at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday at Royal Purple Raceway.
