SUNDAY - BROWN, DEJORIA AND LINE RACE TO VICTORIES IN LAS VEGAS

Defending Top Fuel world champion Antron Brown raced to his first victory of the season Sunday at the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals.

Alexis DeJoria (Funny Car) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) also were winners in their categories at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in the fourth of 24 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing events.

Brown powered his Matco Tools dragster to a 3.843 second pass at 314.60 mph to defeat first-time finalist Troy Buff, who drove his Bill Miller Engineering dragster to a 3.918 at 307.58 in the runner-up effort.

“It never gets boring,” Brown said. “It’s more than just a trophy, it’s all the hard work it takes to get here. We struggled the first three races but we just kept digging we kept our head down and just kept going.”

With the win, Brown moves to second in the Top Fuel points standings, trailing leader Brittany Force. Force lost to Buff in round two.

Brown defeated Leah Pritchett and Dave Connolly before facing off against Buff, who defeated JR Todd in the semis. Brown has 55 career wins in 98 final round appearances, including 39 wins in Top Fuel.

In Funny Car, DeJoria piloted her Tequila Patron Toyota Camry to a 3.968 at 315.49 to overtake defending world champion Del Worsham in his DHL Camry. Worsham raced to a 3.988 at 323.58. It is DeJoria’s second win at LVMS, where she also won in 2014, and her fourth Funny Car victory.

“This fourth trophy was definitely a difficult one,” said DeJoria, who had not won in the last 33 races. “It took a lot of risks to get here.

“We made consistent passes down the race track all four runs in qualifying and on race day as well. I don’t know when the last time was that we did that. It’s incredible to be a part of this.”

DeJoria moved to eighth in the Funny Car points. Robert Hight maintained the points lead in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro after losing to DeJoria in the quarterfinals. DeJoria also outran 16-time world champion John Force in the semifinals.

It is the first time in NHRA history where three women have raced to wins in nitro categories in consecutive events. DeJoria’s Funny Car win follows Top Fuel wins in Phoenix and Gainesville by Leah Pritchett and Brittany Force at the last two events.

“It’s great to be a part of that history,” DeJoria said.

In a battle of Chevy Camaros, two-time world champion Line defeated KB Racing teammate Bo Butner in the Pro Stock final after Butner turned on the red light at the start. Line extended his points lead with his second win in his fourth consecutive final round appearance to open the season.

“It’s been special to say the least," said Line, who beat Matt Hartford, Chris McGaha and Erica Enders en route to the final. "It’s been a fun ride. Hopefully it continues like this for the rest of the year.”

It is Line’s 39th career victory and the fourth consecutive victory for the KB Racing team.

Line widens his points lead over teammate Greg Anderson and Butner, who defeated Anderson in the semifinals, sits in third for KB Racing.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues April 22-24 in Charlotte, N.C. with the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway.

SATURDAY - ANDERSON WINS K&N HORSEPOWER CHALLENGE; TORRENCE, BECKMAN AND LINE ARE NO. 1 QUALIFIERS

Greg Anderson raced to victory in the K&N Horsepower Challenge in an uncontested final round when teammate Jason Line’s car broke on the starting line Saturday at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Anderson’s Summit Racing Equipment Chevrolet Camaro lost traction at the start, but he was able to cruise down the track to claim his fifth victory in the lucrative Pro Stock all-star event.

With the victory Anderson earns $50,000 and a chance to walk away with more than $100,000 during the weekend. With a victory in tomorrow’s DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals, Anderson could earn an additional $50,000, including a $25,000 sweep bonus from NHRA.

He started the bonus race as the top seed and outran rival Jeg Coughlin Jr. and tough Texan Chris McGaha to advance to the final.

“It’s so much fun racing this race, you don’t have to worry about points, you don’t have to worry about screwing up or anything; you just go have fun and try to win the big cash,” Anderson said. “Fifty grand is big to us. It’s huge. It’s obviously the biggest payday we can make a year.

“It’s a great start to the weekend. I missed this race the last two years. It feels great getting back in it and getting the blood flowing again on a Saturday afternoon in front of the grandstands and just racing.”

In other racing today, Steve Torrence (Top Fuel), Jack Beckman (Funny Car) and Line (Pro Stock) claimed No. 1 qualifying positions and will lead their classes into Sunday’s noon eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

In Top Fuel, Torrence held on to the top qualifying position with his Friday performance of 3.728 seconds at 325.30 mph in his Capco Contractors/Torrence Racing dragster. It is his first top qualifying position at The Strip, second of the season and seventh of his career.

Torrence, who had the quickest car in each session, has had a hot start to the season as he was the No. 1 qualifier at the Winternationals and went on to earn the Wally at the season-opening Pomona, Calif. race in February.

“To come out here to Vegas and to have that much of a dominating performance through qualifying is huge for our confidence going into tomorrow,” said Torrence, who will meet Steve Chrisman in round one. “I feel like we have a really good race car. Every run was pretty unbelievable. The car has just been flawless.”

Doug Kalitta powered his Mac Tools dragster to a 3.732 at 327.19 for the second qualifying spot and will meet Steve Faria in the first round. Defending world champion Antron Brown took the third qualifying spot with a 3.760 at 319.45 in his Matco Tools dragster and will open against Scott Palmer. Still riding momentum from her first Top Fuel victory at the recent Gatornationals, Brittany Force qualified fourth with a 3.768 at 316.90 in her Monster Energy dragster and will pair with her final round foe from Florida, Terry McMillen.

With his track record elapsed time of 3.916 at 322.88 in his Infinite Hero Dodge Charger, Beckman claimed his third No. 1 qualifier of the season in Funny Car, 18th of his career and first at LVMS. Beckman will race Terry Haddock in the opening round.

“I’m more than satisfied,” Beckman said. “We’ve qualified No. 1 in two different cars this year. I think that’s a testament to the DSR chassis shop and to (crew chiefs) Jimmy (Prock), John (Medlen), Chris (Cunningham) and the Infinite Hero guys.”

Courtney Force qualified second, piloting her Traxxas Chevy Camaro SS to a 3.928 at 326.08 and will face Bob Bode. Force Racing teammate and Gatornationals winner Robert Hight qualified third with a 3.935 at 325.37 in his Auto Club Chevy Camaro and will meet Jeff Arend in the first round. Ron Capps, a five-time Las Vegas winner and currently second in points, failed to qualify for the race in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger.

Pro Stock points leader Line qualified in the top spot for the second time this season with his run of 6.687 at 205.98 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro from Friday’s second qualifying session. This is Line’s second No. 1 qualifier of the season, third at this event, sixth at the track and 43rd of his career.

“It’s a great car right now,” said Line, who will race Matt Hartford in round one. ”We have a great shot to win the race, no question about that. It drove well this weekend, very well for me. Certainly I was excited to try and win the K&N Horsepower Challenge, but it’s a good swift kick and it knocks the wind out of you a little bit, and it’s a good motivator for tomorrow.”

Line and Anderson have combined to win the first three NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events. Anderson won the Winternationals and the Gatornationals, while Line picked up the victory in Phoenix. Anderson qualified second and will try to sweep the race when he opens with Joey Grose. KB racing teammate Bo Butner took the third qualifying spot with a 6.693 at 205.41 in his Jim Butner Auto Chevy Camaro and will meet veteran driver V. Gaines in the first round.

“Overall a great day for KB Racing and the Summit Racing crew,” Line said.

Defending world champion Erica Enders, who has won the last four races at this track in the past two seasons, will meet Aaron Strong in the first round as she tries for her fifth consecutive win here.

FRIDAY - BECKMAN, TORRENCE AND LINE RACE TO QUALIFYING LEADS AT LAS VEGAS

Jack Beckman raced to a track record performance to lead Funny Car qualifying Friday at the DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals.

Steve Torrence (Top Fuel) and Jason Line (Pro Stock) also were qualifying leaders in their categories at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

Beckman, who is in position to earn his third No. 1 qualifying position of the season, powered his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger to a track record time of 3.916 seconds at 322.88 mph in the day’s final qualifying session at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Beckman opened qualifying here in 11th after his car lost traction early in the run. Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at 1 and 4 p.m. to set the starting lineups for Sunday’s noon eliminations.

“If there’s cloud cover tomorrow that run is definitely in jeopardy,” Beckman said. “Whether it stands or not, when we struggled on the first run we were really aggressive. That makes it more difficult because we don’t have any data from that run. It’s gratifying as a driver to know the crew can come back after a run like that and still go to the No. 1 position.”

Courtney Force qualified second with a 3.928 at a track record speed of 326.08 in her Traxxas Chevy Camaro and was followed in the lineup by Phoenix winner Tim Wilkerson, who posted a 3.936 at 320.66 in his Levi Ray & Shoup Ford Mustang. Points leader Robert Hight qualified seventh in his Auto Club Camaro with a 3.980 at 320.05.

In Top Fuel, Winternationals winner Torrence led qualifying with a 3.728 at 325.30 in his Capco Contractors dragster. Torrence was quickest in the first qualifying session with a 3.73 and then nearly ran quicker than the track elapsed time record on his second attempt of the day.

“That’s a heck of a way to start the weekend with a 73, and we were not expecting that at all,” Torrence said. “We were trying to run a little quicker (in the second) session but didn’t do everything we needed to. It still ran a 72 and that’s good enough for No. 1. Hopefully that stands for tomorrow.”

After the hot start to open the season Torrence struggled a bit in the past two races, but says his team, which is led by crew chiefs Richard Hogan and Bobby Lagana and tuning consultant Alan Johnson, is back on track after making some adjustments to the car since the Gatornationals in Florida.

“The guys did a lot of work over the last week and we changed a lot of things on the car,” Torrence said. “There was some data we obtained from Brittany (Force’s) car with how it has been running and we changed our car over to that. That’s the great thing about our unique alliance and it’s working real well.”

Points leader Force, who like Torrence is also a client of tuning consultant Johnson and has advanced to finals at the last two races, qualified third in her Monster Energy dragster with a 3.768 at 316.90. Doug Kalitta qualified second in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.732 at 327.19.

Series points leader Line led the Pro Stock order with a performance of 6.687 seconds at 205.98 mph in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro.

Line, who has advanced to every final this season and hasn’t qualified lower than second at any event, is continuing his momentum at this event, a hometown race for his team owner Ken Black.

“I’ve said it before, we are the least worst right now,” Line said. “Everyone is making gains and we have a lot of work to do. I am glad to be the No. 1 qualifier. The race is really won at the shop and we had a very busy offseason. It has been a lot of things, but it really came down to the effort.”

Bo Butner qualified second with a 6.693 at 205.41 in his Jim Butner Auto Camaro and Line’s teammate Greg Anderson qualified third in his Summit Racing Camaro with a 6.694 at 205.88.

Line will be one of eight drivers who will race for $50,000 on Saturday in the K&N Horsepower Challenge, an all-star bonus event for the 200-mph factory hot rod class. Third seed Line will meet Shane Gray in the opening round. Top seed Anderson will open the bonus race against fan vote winner Jeg Coughlin Jr. Erica Enders is the two-time defending winner of the event, and she will face fellow two-time Challenge winner Allen Johnson in the opener. Chris McGaha and Drew Skillman will meet in the other round one pairing.

Line has been a runner-up in the K&N Horsepower Challenge three times, but has never won. He hopes to change that stat tomorrow.

“It probably is my best chance to win it and everyone is saying it’s my turn, but this is drag racing and you don’t get turns,” Line said. “I am hoping tomorrow I can do that. We’ve got great hot rods right now, these Summit Camaros are really fast.”

Friday's results after the first two of four rounds of qualifying for the 17th annual DENSO Spark Plugs NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, fourth of 24 events in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.  Qualifying will continue Saturday for Sunday's final eliminations.
