2015 NHRA THUNDER VALLEY NATS - BRISTOL RESULTS

SUNDAY - HAGAN, CRAMPTON AND ENDERS WIN ON FATHER’S DAY

Matt Hagan won at his home track in Funny Car for the first time in his career Sunday at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

Richie Crampton (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) were also winners in their respective categories at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at the historic dragstrip in northeast Tennessee.

Hagan, a native of Christiansburg, Va., powered to a 4.164-second run at 303.23 mph in his Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T to defeat Don Schumacher Racing teammate Ron Capps in the final. The victory was Hagan’s first at Bristol Dragway, fourth of the season and 18th of his career.

Hagan outan Jeff Diehl, Cruz Pedregon and Jack Beckman in earlier rounds en route to the final. With the victory the two-time and defending Funny Car world champion increased his series points lead.

“This is just such a special race for me,” Hagan said. “I’m two hours down the road and have so many friends and family out here. It just makes it special. I’ve wanted to win Bristol for a long time. I consider it my home track.”

Capps was appearing in his fifth final of the season in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger R/T. The three-time Bristol winner defeated 2009 world champ Robert Hight, 16-time world champ John Force and two-time world champ Tony Pedregon to reach the final which keeps him second in points.

Crampton, last season’s Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award winner, raced his Lucas Oil dragster to a 3.884 at 321.04 to take the win over three-time world champ Larry Dixon, whose C&J Energy Services dragster slowed to a 4.004 at 250.41. The win was Crampton’s first at Bristol, third of the season and fifth of his career. He is now 5-0 in finals and moves to third in points.

“To have a winning record over a former world champion is pretty exciting for me,” said Crampton, who is now 3-0 against Dixon in finals. “I can’t believe we keep racing each other in final rounds. They are a great group of guys. The law of averages says he is going to get me back real soon.”

Dixon was appearing in his third final of the season, all three against Crampton. The three-time world champ is still searching for his first win since Phoenix in 2011. Dixon is now fourth in points leaving Bristol.

In a Pro Stock final featuring a battle between Chevy Camaros, Enders defended her Bristol win from last season with a final round 6.685 at 206.95 to Chris McGaha’s 6.689 at 207.46. Enders, the defending Pro Stock world champ, defeated John Gaydosh, Jason Line and Shane Gray en route to the final . The win was Enders’ fourth of the season and 16th of her career, two behind Top Fuel’s Shirley Muldowney for second on the all-time wins list for women in the Mello Yello Series.

“I’m not shy to say that Bristol is one of my favorite places to race,” said Enders, who retakes the points lead in Pro Stock. “It’s always been good to me. I guess every driver has their tracks that no matter what you do wrong it always ends up right, even if it’s not always pretty. That was what last year here was. Today we earned it.”

McGaha was appearing in his second career final, his first coming at Houston earlier this year. His Harlow Sammons Chevy Camaro has been competitive in both, losing to Enders in the two finals. He beat Kenny Delco, Vincent Nobile and Jonathan Gray to reach the final.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues at Norwalk, Ohio, July 2-5 with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park.

SMITH CLAIMS PRO MOD VICTORY AT THUNDER VALLEY NATIONALS

Rickie Smith claimed his first win of the season in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals. Smith, the two-time and defending world champ, powered his IDG 2015 Chevy Camaro to a winning performance of 5.944-seconds at 244.52 mph over Gainesville winner Bob Rahaim’s TLC Waste Management 2015 Corvette. The win was the King, N.C. native’s eighth career victory and third at Bristol Dragway. He is now fifth in points.

“It was a good time to start making rounds,” said Smith of the switch to his new Camaro. “There are still a lot of races left. We gave up on it a couple of races ago but this may get a little fire back in the old guy’s eyes again.”

Rahaim, the No. 1 qualifier with the ninth fastest Pro Mod run ever in qualifying, fouled out with a red-light during the final, negating his 5.962 at 230.72. He was searching for his second career win. Rahaim is second in points.

SATURDAY - J. FORCE, SCHUMACHER AND ENDERS CLAIM TOP STARTING SPOTS AT THUNDER VALLEY NATIONALS

John Force will start in the No. 1 spot in Funny Car eliminations following a rain delayed day of racing Saturday at the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals at Bristol Dragway.

Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders (Pro Stock) also earned No. 1 qualifying positions and will lead their categories into tomorrow’s noon eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at the historic dragstrip in northeast Tennessee.

Force ran a track record 3.978-second pass at 323.43 mph under the lights in his PEAK Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS to claim the top spot. Force, the 16-time Funny Car world champ, earned his first No. 1 starting spot of the season and 153rd of his career. It is his first career top qualifying effort at Bristol.

“What’s really good to see is the team grow,” said Force, who will line up opposite Terry Haddock in the first round. “Jon Schaffer was groomed as crew chief under Mike Neff for the last four or five years. He didn’t have a clue but earned this shot. We rallied a bunch of kids. This is what I dreamed of doing.”

Two-time and defending world champ Matt Hagan qualified second in his Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T with a 3.996 at 322.04. Hagan, from nearby Southwestern Virginia, is looking for his first win in Tennessee and will face Jeff Diehl in the first round.

Jack Beckman, the 2012 world champ, qualified his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T third with a 3.966 at 319.60, earning him a matchup with John Hale. Kalitta Motorsports teammates Del Worsham and Alexis DeJoria will start as the No. 4 and 5 seeds respectively.

Schumacher upped his Top Fuel No. 1 run from Friday with a track record 3.745-second pass at 326.08 mph under the lights in his U.S. Army dragster to claim the top seed. Schumacher, the eight-time and defending world champ clinched his third No. 1 qualifier of the season, fourth at Bristol and 79th of his career. He will open eliminations against Troy Buff.

“That was a great run but it doesn’t mean a whole lot,” said Schumacher, who is going for his sixth win at Bristol Dragway. “We’re going to be racing in 90-degree temperatures tomorrow. It’s going to be up to the crew that gets down a difficult track and not just throwing horsepower at it like we just did.”

Doug Kalitta qualified second with a 3.750 at 329.50. Kalitta, driver of the Mac Tools dragster, is searching for his fourth win at Bristol and will begin that quest against Terry McMillen.

Shawn Langdon, the 2013 Top Fuel world champ, qualified third with a 3.767 at 322.42 in his Knuckle Sandwich/Bass Pro Shops/Toyota dragster and will race veteran Pat Dakin on Sunday. Spencer Massey qualified fourth while three-time world champ Larry Dixon will start fifth. Dixon set the track speed record with a 331.04 mph run in his C&J Energy Services dragster.

In Pro Stock, defending world champ Enders ran a 6.632 at 207.59 in her Racing in Red/Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro to earn her fourth No. 1 position of the season, first at Bristol Dragway and 16th of her career. Enders will meet John Gaydosh in the first round.

“It was definitely a long day,” said Enders, the winner of this event last season. “We went out there and we knew that the air got better and that the racetrack was in the best condition it’s been all weekend. We went after it but still was conservative. My crew chiefs did a great job.”

Four-time world champ Greg Anderson qualified No. 2 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro with a 6.646 at 206.67. Anderson, a three-time race winner this season, is looking for his third career Bristol victory and will matchup against V Gaines in round one.

Chris McGaha qualified his Harlow Sammons Chevy Camaro third with a 6.647 at 206.67, earning him a run against Kenny Delco. Shane Gray and local favorite Allen Johnson qualified fourth and fifth.

Two-time Bristol winner Del Worsham is second after his 4.034 at 319.07 in the DHL Toyota Camry. Two-time and defending world champ Matt Hagan ran his Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T to a 4.035 at 318.09 at his home track, putting him in the third spot. McGaha was third overall following the opening session and then his crew made the right adjustments to push him to first in the final qualifying round of the day.

“I was expecting everyone to turn the wick up,” said McGaha, who is looking for his second No. 1 in a row after Epping. “But they didn’t so here we are. We are trying not to jinx ourselves by being No. 1 but here we are.”
