2015 NHRA SUMMIT RACING EQUIPMENT NATIONALS - NORWALK RESULTS

SUNDAY - KALITTA, BECKMAN, ANDERSON AND STOFFER SCORE VICTORIES AT NORWALK

Doug Kalitta raced to his second Top Fuel victory of the season Sunday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Karen Stoffer (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also raced to victories at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event west of Cleveland.

Kalitta earned his 37th career victory by powering his Mac Tools dragster past defending event winner Antron Brown in the final round. Kalitta, also the event’s No. 1 qualifier, covered the distance in 3.823 seconds at 322.34 mph while Brown’s Matco Tools dragster lost traction and trailed with a 3.918 at 307.79.

“This is our hometown track and it was great having a lot of family and close friends here, so it doesn’t get much better than that,” said Kalitta, whose team is based in Ypsilanti, Mich. “Even my mom actually showed up. I think she’s only shown up one other time in my entire career. She watches it on TV quite a bit but doesn’t come too often. I’m going to have to tell her that she has to come out [again since] we won with her here.”

Kalitta used the good vibes from the home track advantage to race past Chris Karamesines, Steve Torrence and Clay Millican in earlier rounds. He moved to third in points with the victory. Runner-up Brown and semifinalist Tony Schumacher are first and second overall in the series standings.

“It was a great team effort today,” Kalitta said. “It’s tough to win out here and I’m glad we were able to pull it off today. You have to be on your game. It was a great weekend and the Bader family put on a heck of a show.”

In Funny Car, Beckman scored his third victory of the season by racing past Courtney Force in the final round. Beckman claimed his 18th career victory with a final round performance of 4.211 at 301.67 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T, while Force’s Traxxas Chevy Camaro SS slowed near mid-track and finished in 4.609 at 199.64.

Beckman, the 2012 world champ, has fully emerged from a two-year slump where he didn’t win a race in 2013-14. With new crew chief Jimmy Prock on board he has also posted victories this season at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, N.C. and Topeka, Kan.

“This race was awesome for what we had to overcome and the fact that we beat all of the Force cars,” said Beckman, who ousted the 16-time champ John Force in the opening round and then beat Robert Hight and Tim Wilkerson before defeating Courtney in the final. “It was a fabulous win.”

It was Beckman’s second Norwalk win and he moves to third in the points standings. He said the win light against Ms. Force couldn’t have flashed any faster.

“We didn’t make a great run in the final,” Beckman said. “The interesting thing about a nitro Funny Car is that they are fast. At half-track, you think you’re in the fastest thing on the planet, but at that point, you can’t wait until the win light comes on. The finish line can’t come up fast enough.”

Anderson took his fourth Pro Stock victory of the season and 78th of his career by holding off rookie sensation Drew Skillman in the final round. Anderson posted a 6.592 at 212.19 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro to finish just of front of Skillman, whose bright red Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro clocked a 6.594 at 211.43.

“It’s pretty cool because we come here with high hopes,” said Anderson of his third win at one of his sponsor’s marquee events on the circuit. “We want to do so well in front of all the folks from Summit here. You put a lot of pressure on yourself. I keep saying it, ‘Most people would come in and say we don’t want that pressure, we’re going to dread this weekend. It’s just going to be too much stress.’ We love it. Then, when we went through qualifying and didn’t do that well, we thought we were embarrassing ourselves, so we put our heads together overnight and we got it right today. When [teammate] Jason [Line] and I were the two quickest cars in round one, we forgot all about qualifying. We raced like we’re capable of and I’m proud to be part of this team.”

Anderson, who is showing glimpses of the form he used in some of his previous championship seasons, regained the series points lead over No. 1 qualifier Erica Enders, who was upset in the opening round. He now holds a 60-point lead over the defending world champ.

“There is so much competition in this class,” Anderson said. “It is such a battle every weekend. It is so hard to win and it feels so good when you do win. I’m having a ball. It’s a dog fight every week. You feel fantastic at the end of the day if you can find a way to win, to conquer it. This is no less gratifying than it was with my very first win back in 2001.”

In only the third pro final round featuring a pair of female finalists in NHRA history, Stoffer defeated Angelle Sampey to take the Pro Stock Motorcycle win. Stoffer earned her second win of the season and eighth of her career on her Stoffer Enterprises Suzuki when Angelle Sampey fouled with a red-light start on her Star Racing Buell.

Stoffer, who was only planning to race a limited schedule this season, finds herself in second place in the points as the two-wheel category’s only multi-time winner this season, 45 back of series leader Eddie Krawiec.

“I certainly can’t imagine the way this season has gone,” said Stoffer, who defeated a trio of world champs – Matt Smith, Krawiec and LE Tonglet – to reach the final. “I’m still pinching myself, but we never planned how this season was going to go. I didn’t think I’d be here for a second. We just wanted to put our best foot forward, and to end up winning, that is icing on the cake.”

Her win over Sampey avenged the only other final round meeting between the two veteran riders. Sampey beat Stoffer at Reading, Pa. in 2002. The only other Mello Yello Series final to feature an all-female pairing happened in Top Fuel in 1982 when Shirley Muldowney defeated Lucille Lee in Columbus, Ohio.

"Racing Angelle in a final for the first time since 2002 was interesting,” Stoffer said. “We both struggled here, so we had to race a couple of times in qualifying. It was great to race her in the final. I would have liked to have seen two green lights, but we all live and die by the Tree in this class. We managed to get our tire hooked up, and we went down the track, so I think we’d have been in good shape no matter what."

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series continues July 9-12 with the Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway near Chicago.

SATURDAY - KALITTA, HAGAN, ENDERS AND ARANA JR. EARN NO. 1 QUALIFYING POSITIONS

Doug Kalitta raced to the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel Saturday at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as the No. 1 qualifiers in their categories at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event just west of Cleveland.

Kalitta powered his Mac Tools dragster to a track record time of 3.731 seconds at 327.82 mph to earn his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season and the 43rd of his career. Kalitta will face Chris Karamesines in the opening round of eliminations.

“I knew the guys had my car loaded for bear out there and I was just hoping it was going to stick,” Kalitta said. “It was great conditions and right now it doesn’t get much better. The track was good. We held on and I can’t say enough about my guys, they’ve been working their tails off with these night sessions. We’re definitely happy to be on top here today.”

Defending world champ Tony Schumacher qualified second in the U.S. Army dragster and will meet old foe Cory McClenathan in the first round. Defending event winner and current points leader Antron Brown qualified third in the Matco Tools dragster and will face Terry McMillen. McMillen took a wild ride into a grassy field at the very end of the shutdown area following his final run when the brakes on his Amalie Oil Instigator dragster failed to slow his car down.

Defending world champ and current points leader Hagan lowered the Funny Car track elapsed time record with a career-best 3.973 at 321.96 in his Rocky Boots/Mopar Dodge Charger R/T to claim his third No. 1 of the season and 20th of his career. He will open eliminations against John BoJec.

“I really thought there would be more three second runs but I guess a lot of guys went over center because there was nothing to lose and they were pushing too hard,” Hagan said. “We thought we might be able to run a 3.94 but [crew chief] Dickie [Venables] pulled it back at the last minute. Still, I can’t be upset with a 3.97. Now, we have to throw that out the window and prepare for race mode tomorrow with the heat and sun on the track.”

Two-time world champ Cruz Pedregon was the only other Funny Car driver to clock a three-second run, and posted a 3.991 at 312.21 in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry. He will meet John Hale in the first round. Robert Hight qualified third and will race former Norwalk winner Tony Pedregon in the first round. Defending event winner John Force qualified sixth in his all-white Chevrolet Camaro SS and will line up beside the Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge of Jack Beckman in the opener.

Defending Pro Stock world champ and event winner Enders claimed her fifth No. 1 of the season and the 17th of her career with a performance of 6.532 at 211.23 in her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro. Enders will race Alan Prusiensky in the first round.

“I know what my guys are capable of, and I know I have a really great race car underneath me, and Norwalk has been really good to us in the past,” Enders said. “We always enjoy coming here.”

Jonathan Gray qualified second and will meet Curt Steinbach in round one and No. 3 qualifier Chris McGaha will race John Gaydosh. Summit Racing’s Greg Anderson, who has been to six finals this season with three wins, qualified seventh and will race rival Allen Johnson in the marquee first round pairing.

Arana Jr. earned his second No. 1 qualifying position of the season in Pro Stock Motorcycle and 18th of career with his Friday run of 6.868 at 196.50 on his Lucas Oil Buell. He will meet Angie Smith in the opener.

“It’s awesome to be out here racing on this big holiday weekend and we had the perfect paint scheme for it with our red, white and blue Lucas Oil bike,” Arana Jr. said. “We have a lot of good history at this track. I had my first No. 1 here and my dad won this race. Hopefully we can carry that good mojo on to four win lights tomorrow.”

Chip Ellis qualified second and will race Joe DeSantis, while Jerry Savoie qualified third and will meet Angelle Sampey. Series points leader Eddie Krawiec will face Chaz Kennedy in the first round. Defending world champ Andrew Hines qualified sixth and will race Scotty Pollacheck.

This weekend’s Pro Mod racing is presented by The Real Pro Mod Association.

Coughlin used a holeshot start in his JEGS.com Corvette to hold off the quicker IDG Chevy Camaro at the finish line at Summit Motorsports Park. Coughlin finished in 5.859 seconds at 250.18 mph to pass Smith’s machine, which finished in a quicker but losing 5.856 at 247.88 at the finish line.

“It was awesome just to get qualified and then to take out Rickie in the first round,” Coughlin said.  “I mean, he’s a five-star racer, I mean he is a true gem. It was a great win for the JEGS team and Rickie is fast, there’s no doubt about it, but we had a little more luck go our way.”

Coughlin’s victory was one of six upsets in the first round of Pro Mod racing. Others to win from the bottom of the ladder included No. 14 qualifier Mike Castellana defeating Pete Farber, No. 12 Troy Coughlin Jr. defeating Jim Whiteley, No. 11 Dan Stevenson outran Kevin Fiscus, No. 10 Robert Patrick beat Mike Knowles and No. 9 Khalid alBalooshi powered by Danny Rowe.

FRIDAY - HAGAN, MASSEY, GRAY AND ARANA JR. TAKE QUALIFYING LEADS

Matt Hagan

Defending Funny Car world champion Matt Hagan continued his recent hot streak by powering to the qualifying lead Friday under the lights at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

Spencer Massey (Top Fuel), Jonathan Gray (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event at Summit Motorsports Park just west of Cleveland.

Hagan, who won the most recent event in Bristol and is the current series points leader, raced to a track record performance of 3.986 seconds at 322.96 mph in his Rocky Boots / Mopar Dodge Charger R/T. His three-second run was the first one in Funny Car at the popular northern Ohio dragstrip.

Spencer Massey

“To go out there and put a three on the board is huge for us,” said Hagan, who has two No. 1 qualifiers this season and 19 in his career. “I think we’ll see some more threes tomorrow, so I am not sure if that will hold for us. If someone runs quicker you just go over and shake their hand and tell them good job. It was cool to put a three on the board for these fans. We’ve got a great race car and a great team right now. Dickie Venables (crew chief) is the guy and I wouldn’t trade him for any amount of money. He’s the guy and I am tickled to have him in my corner.”

Del Worsham raced to second in his DHL Toyota Camry with a 4.005 at 321.42 and defending event winner and 16-time world champ John Force was third in his all-white Chevrolet Camaro SS with a 4.019 at 320.20. Ohio native Chad Head qualified fourth in his Head Racing Camry with a 4.019 at 314.68.

Massey raced to a track record time of 3.741 at 323.74 to lead Top Fuel qualifying in his Red Fuel dragster. Massey is looking for his second No. 1 of the season and ninth of his career.

Jonathan Gray

“We knew the conditions were out there,” Massey said. “At the eighth-mile I could feel the clutch come in and I knew I was on a ride. I knew the track record was going to be there for the taking this weekend. We’re also going to have another night session tomorrow so everybody will have another chance to go after it again. I am happy to be No. 1 now, but I want to stay there.”

Brittany Force was second-quickest in her Monster Energy dragster with a 3.755 at 325.92 and defending world champion Tony Schumacher was third with a 3.761 at 326.87 in the U.S. Army dragster. Doug Kalitta is fourth in his Mac Tools dragster with a 3.761 at 325.14.

Second-generation racer Gray paced the Pro Stock order with a 6.542 at 210.93 in his Gray Motorsports Chevy Camaro. The younger brother of Shane Gray and son of veteran racer Johnny Gray, he is still looking for his first No. 1 qualifying position in his second season.

Hector Arana Jr.

“We’ve got the stuff to do it and we’ve always had the tools to make it happen and it’s just been a matter of timing,” Gray said. “Like last year I think we‘re getting to that point where we need to start running good and be ready for the Countdown. I was surprised at the run because the car went left. I didn’t think it would run that fast going left. It was loose and when that told me it went 54 I was like, ‘Wow.’ That was pretty impressive for as much moving around as it was doing. I am really proud of the guys. They’ve been working hard and maybe it’s starting to pay off. Hopefully that will hold up. Since we run the same time tomorrow, I’m not sure, but maybe it will.”
Chris McGaha is second with a 6.543 at 211.33 in his Harlow Sammons Racing Chevy Camaro and Vincent Nobile sits third in his Mountain View Tire Camaro with a 6.551 at 210.93. Series leader and defending world champ Erica Enders is seventh in her Elite Motorsports Camaro with a 6.564 at 211.13.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Arana Jr. also took advantage of the unseasonably cool conditions to power his Lucas Oil Buell to a leading effort of 6.868 at 195.79.

“The conditions got really good,” Arana Jr. said. “We made an adjustment from our first run and it all came together and we were able to make a nice pass. As soon as I popped the clutch and felt the bike leave as hard as it did I knew it was a good run. I was anxious to get down there and see how quick it ran.
