2015 - NHRA SUMMERNATIONALS - ENGLISHTOWN RESULTS

SUNDAY - BROWN EARNS MILESTONE VICTORY AT ENGLISHTOWN; HAGAN, ANDERSON AND SAVOIE ALSO WINNERS

Antron Brown

Antron Brown raced to his third victory of the season and earned his first ever Top Fuel win at his home track, Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, Sunday at the Toyota NHRA Summernationals.

Matt Hagan (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were victorious at the ninth of 24 events in the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Brown, a local favorite as a native of nearby Chesterfield, powered his Matco Tools dragster to the winner’s circle with a performance of 3.843 seconds at 318.47 mph, also claiming a milestone 50th NHRA victory in the process. Brown has 34 wins in Top Fuel and he earned 16 victories in Pro Stock Motorcycle competition from 1998-2007.

The 2012 Top Fuel world champion and current series points leader raced past Brittany Force’s Monster Energy dragster, which lost traction early in the run and finished in 5.398 at 150.16 in her fifth career final round appearance. As the No. 1 qualifier, Brown defeated Jenna Haddock, Doug Kalitta and Dave Connolly in earlier rounds.

Matt Hagan

“We knew (my 50th win) was at stake when we came in here, but I put everything of what this race means to the side, and that’s what our team did,” Brown said. “We came in here and treated it like a race. Every race we come in, we put in all the hard work and put in our all. We had to remind ourselves that each and every round. To do it in the hometown and in front of family means the world to me.”

Since the beginning of the 2009 season, Brown has earned 32 victories, which is 10 more than his closest Top Fuel competitor and teammate, Tony Schumacher.

Force raced to her first final round appearance of the season by defeating recent Topeka winner Richie Crampton, defending world champ Schumacher and Terry McMillen in earlier rounds. She was the No. 6 qualifier.

In Funny Car, Hagan’s final-round effort of 4.132 at 299.53 in his Mopar Express Lane/Rocky Boots Dodge Charger R/T was enough to hold off Alexis DeJoria’s Patron XO Café Incendio Toyota Camry at the finish line and earn his third victory of the season.

Greg Anderson

“It’s nice to be able to go out here and run so strong and defend the title that we won last year,” Hagan said. “Everything started clicking here this weekend. (Crew chief) Dickie (Venables) put a great car underneath me. We were able to beat a lot of tough, tough race cars out there and really good drivers. It just gets tougher and tougher each weekend.”

Hagan, the defending world champion, has 17 career wins, two at Raceway Park and now leads the series standings. The No. 4 qualifier raced past 16-time world champion John Force, Tommy Johnson Jr. and teammate Ron Capps to make it to his third final round appearance of the season.

DeJoria qualified 10th and was close to earning her first victory of 2015 by defeating recent Topeka winner Jack Beckman, Dom Lagana and Kalitta Motorsports teammate Del Worsham in the earlier rounds. DeJoria has three career victories in six final round appearances.

Jerry Savoie

Anderson powered his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to a 6.504 at 214.31 mph to earn his 76th career victory and take over the Pro Stock points lead. He sprinted past Allen Johnson in the final round to earn his second win of the season and a category record sixth trophy at Raceway Park.

“I had a great weekend,” Anderson said. “When I got here, the car ran great right off the trailer. I made eight runs in a row. It was awesome. We got the victory. It’s been a while. It’s good to be back. It’s a neat feeling to have a racecar that can win a race if you just pilot it down the race track and don’t do anything wrong. That’s all a driver can ask for.”

As the No. 1 qualifier, Anderson powered past Val Smeland, newcomer Bo Butner and V. Gaines to make it to his eighth career final round appearance at Raceway Park. Anderson has two victories and three runner-up finishes so far this season.

Johnson, still looking for his first victory of 2015, pushed his Magneti Marelli/Team Mopar Dodge Dart past Larry Morgan, Alan Prusiensky and Shane Gray before meeting Anderson in the finals. This was his third career final round appearance at this event.

Louisiana alligator farmer Savoie earned his second career Pro Stock Motorcycle victory when second-time finalist Jim Underdahl turned on the red-light in the final round.  Savoie rode his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki to a 6.794 at 197.71, earning his first Wally since St. Louis 2014.

Savoie advanced to his sixth career final by racing past Joe DeSantis, series points leader and local favorite Eddie Krawiec and Hector Arana Jr. in the first three rounds. With the win, Savoie ties with LE Tonglet for eighth in the points standings.

“The driver goes from zero-to-hero but I’m not a selfish person, this goes to my crew,” Savoie said. “Those guys worked really hard. The biggest thing is Vance and Hines. You’re running against a group of guys that want to win really bad, like I do, and to give you the power and tell you, ‘You have to find it, but it’s there,’ and you have to compete with them? Great company.”

The 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing series continues with the NHRA New England Nationals, June 12-14 in Epping, N.H.

BILL GLIDDEN RACES TO PRO MOD VICTORY AT SUMMERNATIONALS

Bill Glidden raced to his first career victory Sunday in the NHRA J&A Service Pro Mod Drag Racing Series portion of the Toyota NHRA Summernationals.

This weekend’s Pro Mod competition at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park is co-presented by Smithfield Foods and Western Beef and is the fourth of 10 events in the season.

Glidden powered his Mickey Thompson Ford 2010 Mustang to a 5.923-second pass at 243.24 mph to beat Don Walsh’s 5.897 at 252.33 in his Precision Turbo/Walsh Motorsports Chevy Camaro on a holeshot. This was a rematch of the final in Houston earlier this year in which Walsh was victorious.

Glidden entered eliminations as the No. 13 qualifier and raced past Steve Matusek, Troy Coughlin and No. 1 qualifier Mike Janis to make it to the final round. Glidden, the son of 10-time NHRA Pro Stock world champ Bob Glidden, is second in championship points.

Don Walsh, the No. 2 qualifier, sprinted past Mike Knowles, Kevin Fiscus and Gainesville winner Bob Rahaim to make it to his final round appearance of the season. Walsh remains the leader in the points category.

SATURDAY - BROWN RACES TO THIRD CONSECUTIVE NO. 1 QUALIFIER IN TOP FUEL, PEDREGON, ANDERSON AND ELLIS ALSO NO. 1

Antron Brown raced to his third consecutive No. 1 qualifying position of the season in Top Fuel Saturday at the Toyota NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.

Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Chip Ellis (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event.

Brown, a local favorite as a native of nearby Chesterfield, pushed his Matco Tools dragster to the No. 1 spot with a performance of 3.725 seconds at 317.57 mph. The 2012 world champion and current series points leader is the first driver to earn three No. 1 qualifiers in a row since Shawn Langdon in 2012.

This is Brown’s 40th career No. 1 and he will go for his first Top Fuel win at his home track and 50th of his career when he meets Jenna Haddock in the first round.

“We’re very excited, especially being back here at the Toyota NHRA Summernationals here in Englishtown,” Brown said. “It feels good to be back in front of all of our family and all of our friends and right now our car has been running exceptionally well. We’re getting the bugs worked out of it and we’re still growing with our combinations. We’re looking forward to tomorrow and we’re ready to get after it.”

J.R. Todd qualified second with a 3.727 at 319.52 in his Red Line Oil/Kalitta Air dragster. Todd will face Terry McMillen in the opening round. Tony Schumacher qualified third with a 3.736 at 323.66 in his U.S. Army dragster. The defending and eight-time world champion will open eliminations against Morgan Lucas.

In Funny Car, Pedregon recorded a performance of 3.967 at 306.53 at the controls of his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry to earn his 60th career No. 1 qualifier and sixth at Raceway Park. The 2014 event winner will face John Hale to open eliminations.

“It never ceases to amaze me how much you have to change the set-up of the car when the sun’s out on the track and there’s not as much grip,” Pedregon said. “It’s a double-edged sword to have a car that runs a 3.96. It takes a lot to do that and on the other hand, it takes a lot to slow it down. We have to find it tomorrow because tomorrow is the real deal.”

The rest of the Funny Car field remained the same through Saturday, as Chad Head qualified second by posting a 3.996 at 308.78 in his Head Racing Toyota Camry and he will face Dom Lagana in round one. Last year’s Englishtown runner-up, Del Worsham, will start third with a 3.998 at 314.53 in his DHL Camry and meet first round foe Jeff Diehl. Defending world champ Matt Hagan qualified fourth with a 3.999 at 315.05 in his Rocky Boots/Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T and will open against arch-rival 16-time world champ John Force.

Anderson earned his 76th career No. 1 qualifier in Saturday’s final Pro Stock pair with a 6.479 at 214.76 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro.  This is his first No. 1 qualifier since Seattle 2010. Anderson has a category-leading five career victories at Raceway Park and will face Val Smeland in the first round of eliminations. Anderson has one victory in four final round appearances this season.

"Believe it or not, the race track has been getting better with each run,” Anderson said. “We knew if we could get out of low gear, if we could get hooked up initially the cars were going to run faster. I’m just thrilled. It’s been four years since I’ve had a No. 1 qualifying spot. My car just keeps getting better every race we go to.”

Pro Stock newcomer Drew Skillman powered his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Chevy Camaro to a second place qualifier with a 6.486 at 214.38. Skillman will race John Gaydosh Jr. to open eliminations. Skillman’s Elite Motorsports teammate and series points leader, Erica Enders, qualified third with a 6.500 at 213.60 in her Racing In Red Chevy Camaro, and she will meet Alan Prusiensky in round one.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Chip Ellis rode his PiranaZ Buell to his 14th career No. 1 with a 6.801 at 197.16. This is Ellis’ first top qualifying effort since Memphis 2008. He will face Angie Smith in Sunday’s first round.

“From the very first run I made on the bike I knew it had a lot of horsepower,” Ellis said. “The competition is so tough out here, if you look at what you have to run to even qualify this weekend, it’s crazy. It’s tough. We were just keeping our fingers crossed and hoping that PiranaZ bike pulled us through and it did. So we’re ecstatic.”

Jerry Savoie qualified second with a 6.804 at 197.13 on his Savoie’s Alligator Farm Suzuki and will face Joe DeSantis in the opening round of eliminations. Hector Arana Sr., who is coming off a recent win in Atlanta, rode his Lucas Oil Buell to a fourth qualifier and will meet Shawn Gann in the first round. Defending event winner, series points leader and local favorite Eddie Krawiec qualified seventh overall while defending world champion Andrew Hines will start from the ninth spot.

FRIDAY - BROWN, PEDREGON, ENDERS AND ARANA JR. LEAD QUALIFYING AT ENGLISHTOWN

Antron Brown raced to the qualifying lead in Top Fuel Friday at the Toyota NHRA Summernationals in Englishtown, N.J.

Cruz Pedregon (Funny Car), Erica Enders (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their categories at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park. The race is the ninth of 24 events during the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season.

Brown, the 2012 Top Fuel world champ and current series points leader, powered to a 3.725-second pass at 317.57 mph in his Matco Tools dragster to earn the qualifying lead. He has two victories and two No. 1 qualifiers so far this season. Brown, a local favorite as a native of nearby Chesterfield, has 39 No. 1 qualifiers in his career.

“This track is so good it can actually yield better numbers,” Brown said. “We were going for it. Once the car took off, I felt my car jump up on the tire and I was like, ‘Oh, she’s on one.’ I looked at the scoreboard and we nipped a 72. That thing was running hard. It’s going to be a good weekend.”

Brown is coming off two consecutive No. 1 qualifiers at Atlanta and Topeka, Kan. He raced to victory in Charlotte, N.C. and Atlanta in March and May, respectively. Brown has never won in Englishtown.

J.R. Todd qualified second with a 3.727 at 319.52 in his Red Line Oil/Kalitta Air dragster. Defending and eight-time world champion, Tony Schumacher, qualified third with a 3.736 at 323.66 in his U.S. Army dragster. Leah Pritchett raced her Dote Racing/Gumout dragster to a 3.736 at 321.04 and sits third overall. Shawn Langdon and Brittany Force are fourth and fifth, respectively.

In Funny Car, Pedregon recorded a performance of 3.967 at 306.53 at the controls of his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry, earning him the provisional top position. Pedregon has 59 career No. 1 qualifiers and raced to victory in Englishtown last year after qualifying first. He has five career No. 1 qualifying positions and three career victories at Raceway Park.

“We really raced the track,” Pedregon said. “It’s easy to get caught up and try to run fast. We’ve tried that before but usually you’ve got to keep your emotions out of it and just be smart, race the track and really not pay attention to what the other guys are running. A 3.96 is what came up on the board and it was a great run.”

Chad Head qualified second by posting a 3.996 at 308.78 in his Head Racing Toyota Camry. Last year’s Englishtown runner-up, Del Worsham, is third with a 3.998 at 314.53 in his DHL Camry and is followed by defending world champ Matt Hagan in fourth with a 3.999, 315.05 in his Rocky Boots/Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger R/T. Tommy Johnson Jr. is fifth and Courtney Force and Jack Beckman are sixth and seventh, respectively.

Reigning Pro Stock world champion Enders leads Pro Stock qualifying with a 6.508 at 213.06 in her Racing in Red Chevy Camaro. Enders, the Pro Stock points leader, has 15 No. 1 qualifiers in her career and three this season. She has won three of the last four races.

"The first round we were way too conservative so we went out there [second round] and kind of just got after it,” Enders said. "I knew when I unclutched it that I was on a really good run. It just speaks volumes of my crew chiefs and what they’re capable of. We’re excited about tomorrow and just proud of what we accomplished today.”

Greg Anderson, the 2014 event runner-up, sits second after racing his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro to a 6.511 at 213.43. Anderson has a category-leading five victories at Raceway Park and one victory in four final round appearances so far this season. Anderson’s teammate, Jason Line, pushed his Summit Racing Camaro to the third provisional qualifier, while Larry Morgan sits fourth.

Arana Jr. raced to the qualifying lead in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 6.849 at 196.53 on his Lucas Oil Buell. He has 17 career No. 1 qualifying positions and was the No. 1 qualifier at the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals in Charlotte, N.C. in March. Arana Jr. has nine career victories, but hasn’t made a final round appearance this season.

“When we were waiting in the staging lanes we could feel the temperature dropping pretty rapidly so we knew it was going to get faster and we were able to get lucky and everything came to us,” Arana Jr. said. “We were able to run pretty well.”

Karen Stoffer qualified second with a 6.853 at 196.02 on her Suzuki Extended Protection Suzuki. Jim Underdahl posted a 6.857, 194.80 on his Suzuki Extended Protection Suzuki to take third. Hector Arana Sr., winner of the most recent Pro Stock Motorcycle event in Atlanta, sits in the fourth position, while defending world champion Andrew Hines raced to the fifth spot. Local favorite and series leader Eddie Krawiec, the defending event winner, is ninth overall.

Qualifying resumes Saturday at 1:15 p.m. with the final two sessions to set the fields for Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations.
