SUNDAY RESULTS - J. FORCE, SCHUMACHER AND ANDERSON VICTORIOUS AT EPPING

John Force picked up his second Funny Car win of the season Sunday at the NHRA New England Nationals at New England Dragway.

Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) also took home victories in their respective categories at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event near Boston. All three winners of the event rank as the active wins leaders in their classes.

Force, a 16-time Funny Car world champ, raced to a winning performance of 4.160 seconds at 309.49 mph in his PEAK Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS, defeating No. 1 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. in the final. The victory was Force’s 143rd of his career, 99 ahead of second place Ron Capps. The win was Force’s first at New England Dragway following a runner-up at this event in 2013. With the win, Force now has a victory at every track that has appeared on the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series circuit.

“I had a great day,” said Force, who moves to third in points with the win. “I’m not going out of racing any time soon, but I was going to win at New England. I almost did the first year and this year I finally did.”

Johnson Jr. was appearing in his first final of the season. The No. 1 qualifier for the weekend, Johnson Jr. leaves Epping still searching for his first win since Bristol last June. He is now fifth in Funny Car points.

In Top Fuel, Schumacher went the distance as the No. 1 qualifier, running a 3.809 at 321.35 in his U.S. Army dragster during a final round win over three-time world champ Larry Dixon, who finished in 3.881 at 319.60 in his C&J Energy Services dragster. Schumacher, the defending and eight-time world champ, secured his second win of the season, second in a row at Epping and 79th of his career. The victory propels Schumacher to second in points.

“[Crew chiefs] Mike [Green] and Neal [Strausbaugh] did an outstanding job today,” said Schumacher. “I felt like I drove well today. Together as a team we went out and won. We did a great job, what a battle.”

Dixon, whose last win came in 2011 at Phoenix, was appearing in his third final of the season and first at New England Dragway. He is now fifth in points.

Anderson drove his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro to a 6.512 at 214.72 in the final round, defeating 2012 Pro Stock world champ Allen Johnson, who trailed with a 6.530 at 213.50 in his Magneti Marelli Dodge Dart. The win was Anderson’s third of the season and 77th of his career. Anderson, a four-time world champ who won last weekend at Englishtown while also beating Johnson in the final, has now won back-to-back races for the first time since 2011.

“My car has been fantastic,” said Anderson, who is now three for three in final rounds this season. “I’m absolutely having a ball. I’ve got a great race team behind me and they are doing a great job. I can’t wait to go to the next race.”

Johnson appeared in his second consecutive final of the season and he moved to fifth in points with the runner-up finish.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series heads to Bristol, Tenn. next weekend for the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals, June 19-21 at Bristol Dragway.

SATURDAY RESULTS - JOHNSON JR., SCHUMACHER AND MCGAHA SECURE NO. 1’S AT NEW ENGLAND NATIONALS

Tommy Johnson Jr. earned the No. 1 qualifying position in Funny Car and will lead the category into Sunday's eliminations at the New England Nationals.

Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) will also lead their respective categories into tomorrow’s 11 a.m. eliminations at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event near Boston.

Johnson Jr. had the quickest run of the third session and second quickest of the fourth Saturday at New England Dragway, holding on to his top spot with his Friday best run of 4.047 seconds at 319.45 mph in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T. This is his first No. 1 since Chicago last season, first at Epping and the 11th of his career. He will face Bob Tasca III in the first round.

“Today was in my opinion more impressive than yesterday,” said Johnson Jr., who is looking for his first win of the season. “To have a car that goes out and runs 4.13 twice in the conditions we had today makes you very confident in your car.”

Two-time world champ Cruz Pedregon qualified second with a 4.052 at 306.46 in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry. Pedregon, who had the quickest run of the final session, races Jeff Diehl in the opening round.

John Force, a 16-time world champ and runner-up at the inaugural running of this event, qualified his PEAK Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS third with a 4.055 at 318.24, setting up a matchup with Dave Richards. Force’s youngest daughter Courtney Force qualified fourth, while teammate Robert Hight will enter race day fifth.

In Top Fuel, Schumacher ran a track-record 3.742 at 324.12 in his U.S. Army dragster on Friday night and that run held to secure his 78th career No. 1, second of the season and first at this event. Schumacher, the eight-time and defending world champ, will be paired with Morgan Lucas in the first round.

“We are getting the data we need,” Schumacher said. “Mike [Green, crew chief] and Neal [Strasbaugh, assistant crew chief] with this new car, every round they get stronger and better. It’s going down the track. We made four runs down the track and because of that we have more data.”

Two-time season winner Richie Crampton will enter eliminations as the No. 2 seed following a 3.744 at 325.92 in his Lucas Oil dragster. The reigning Automobile Club of Southern California Road to the Future Award winner will face Canadian Dan Mercier in the first round. Mercier is making his first Mello Yello Series start.

Shawn Langdon, the 2013 Top Fuel world champ, qualified third after a 3.745 at 324.98 in the Bass Pro Shops/Knuckle Sandwich/AJPE Toyota dragster, earning a matchup with Terry McMillen. Steve Torrence and track speed record holder Spencer Massey qualified fourth and fifth respectively. Torrence will race Dave Connolly and Massey will meet Larry Dixon in the opener.

McGaha ran a 6.520 at 212.66 in his Harlow Sammons Chevy Camaro during Friday’s sessions to pace the Pro Stock field. It is McGaha’s fifth career top qualifying spot and third of the season.

“It feels pretty good to start the show with signs of consistency,” said McGaha, who will have a bye into the second round. “That’s the important thing at this point. We did some experimenting today. It showed signs of improvement.”

Four-time world champ Greg Anderson qualified second in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro with a 6.521 at 213.30. Anderson, the most recent Pro Stock winner at Englishtown, will open eliminations against Alan Prusiensky.

Jason Line, a two-time world champ, enters eliminations in third after a 6.530 at 212.69 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro and will race V. Gaines. Defending world champ Erica Enders qualified fourth and will meet John Gaydosh while No. 5 seed Vincent Nobile and Kenny Delco will face off.

FRIDAY RESULTS - SCHUMACHER, JOHNSON JR. AND MCGAHA TOP QUALIFYING LEADERBOARD AT EPPING

Tony Schumacher raced to the qualifying lead in Top Fuel Friday at the NHRA New England Nationals at New England Dragway.

Tommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car) and Chris McGaha (Pro Stock) also were qualifying leaders at the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series event near Boston.

Schumacher ran a track record 3.742-second pass at 324.12 mph in his U.S. Army dragster to top the leaderboard after the first day of qualifying. Schumacher, the eight-time and defending world champ, is looking for his first top qualifier at Epping and second of the season.

“I think the car is excellent right now,” said Schumacher, winner of this event last season. “There was more there. You look at the computer and there is some room [to improve]. I’m sure most cars that go out there are going to find it.”

Schumacher debuted a new car at the national event in Atlanta last month and finally feels that his dragster is starting to pick up steam. The team has struggled since the switch, losing twice in the second round and once in the first.

“We brought the car out at Atlanta and that’s not been many races,” said Schumacher. “We haven’t gone and won rounds, haven’t been to a final with it. It’s a great car. It should benefit us when it gets warm outside. Right now, we are just maintaining.”

Richie Crampton currently sits second following a 3.744 at 325.92 in his Lucas Oil dragster. Shawn Langdon, the 2013 world champ, was strong with a 3.745 at 324.98 in his Knuckle Sandwich/Bass Pro Shops/AJPE dragster and is provisionally third. Steve Torrence and Spencer Massey, who reset the track speed record at 327.66 mph in his Red Fuel dragster, are fourth and fifth.

Johnson Jr. claimed the Funny Car top spot during the final pair of the category with his 4.047 at 319.45 in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T. Johnson Jr., who entered this event sixth in points, is two sessions away from securing his first No. 1 qualifier since Chicago last season and his first at Epping.

“I was expecting a lot better numbers than what we saw tonight,” Johnson Jr. said. “We got up there and thought we were going to try to run a low zero. The 4.04 was a good number and the guys had a good handle on the tune-up. Track conditions kept getting better and I was thrilled with a 4.04.”

Two-time world champ Cruz Pedregon ran a 4.052 at 306.46 in his Snap-on Tools Toyota Camry to sit second. John Force, a 16-time world champ searching for his first New England win, is currently qualified third with two sessions remaining. Fellow John Force Racing competitors Courtney Force and Robert Hight are fourth and fifth.

In Pro Stock, McGaha ran a 6.520 at 212.66 in his Harlow Sammons Chevy Camaro to lead the factory hot rod field following Friday’s sessions. McGaha is searching for his fifth career No. 1 qualifier and third of the season.

“It’s a pretty good start. Starting sometimes is the most important thing but you’ve got to finish in the end,” said McGaha. “We’ve started off No. 1 before and been able to maintain it. You never know what tomorrow leads. We will see what happens tomorrow and will go from there.”

Four-time world champ Greg Anderson, the most recent Pro Stock winner at Englishtown, is second following Friday’s action with a 6.521 at 213.30 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro. Two-time world champ Jason Line’s 6.530 at 212.69 in his Summit Racing Chevy Camaro was good enough for the provisional No. 3 spot. Defending world champ Erica Enders and Jonathan Gray sit fourth and fifth.

Qualifying at the NHRA New England Nationals wraps up on Saturday with sessions at 12:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to set the fields for Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations.
