2015 NHRA MILE HIGH NATIONALS - DENVER RESULTS

SUNDAY - TORRENCE, BECKMAN, MORGAN AND KRAWIEC RACE TO DENVER WINNER’S CIRCLE

Steve Torrence raced to his first Top Fuel victory in over two years Sunday at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Larry Morgan (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were also victorious at the 14th of 24 events of the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season and first of the NHRA Western Swing.

Torrence powered his Capco Racing/Torrence Motorsports dragster to the winner’s circle with a 3.925-second performance at 319.37 mph to earn his fifth career victory, first at Denver and first since Bristol 2013. Torrence, who defeated Tony Schumacher’s 3.940 at 305.08 in his U.S. Army dragster, earned the seventh spot in the Traxxas Nitro Shootout at Indianapolis.

“I thought I saw him ahead of me, and I said to myself, ‘No, don’t pull this on me,’ ” said Torrence, who moves to ninth in points. “I saw him out there for a little bit and then he disappeared, and I thanked the good Lord when my win light came on because we needed this win. We needed to get back into the Traxxas showdown. Tony and I are friends, but when you run a DSR car, you have to bring you’re A-game. To beat him on the mountain is unbelievable. It’s been way too long to get into the winner’s circle. It’s not representative of the team we have. I’m getting confidence in myself, and that’s a good thing.”

Schumacher, the current Top Fuel points leader and No. 2 qualifier, raced past Steven Chrisman, Clay Millican and Brittany Force before falling to Torrence in the finals. He holds an 85 point advantage over teammate Antron Brown.

Beckman powered his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car to the win for the fourth time this year with a 4.190 at 293.92, beating John Force in the final. Beckman, the 2012 world champ, has 19 career victories, putting him tenth on the all-time wins list in Funny Car. This is his third career win at Bandimere Speedway.

““(My crew chief) Jimmy Prock intimidates the other crew chiefs,” said Beckman, who moves to second in Funny Car points. “He’ll force them to do things they may not be comfortable with. Last year, I was 0-6 against JFR, so I figured I had paid my dues. To do it in the final round today, when they really had the better car throughout the weekend — to beat the No. 1 qualifier, the winningest driver of all time, and at the Mopar race — this is just a perfect weekend.”

Force was appearing in his fourth final round appearance of the season and second against Beckman. Force, a six-time winner at Denver, entered eliminations as the No. 1 qualifier and jumped to third in the Funny Car point standings.

In Pro Stock, Morgan raced to a final round holeshot victory over three-time defending winner Allen Johnson with a 6.944 at 199.02 at the controls of his FireAde Chevy Camaro. With the win, Morgan earned his 12th career victory and second of the season. The final featured an intense staging duel at the starting line, lasting one minute and 45 seconds before Johnson finally staged.

“What a wonderful race!” said Morgan, who won his first Denver event in 1990. “This was probably my best win this year. The Four-Wide (event) was cool because I got to beat three guys at one time. Coming up here and racing Allen, though, I give those guys all the respect in the world for being in the final round nine straight years. Nobody will ever do what he’s done up here, and I commend him for that. Those guys are still the ‘King of the Mountain.’ I just got lucky enough to keep it for one race. He still owns this place.”

Johnson, who was appearing in his fourth final of the season with one win, was looking for his fourth consecutive victory at Thunder Mountain.

Krawiec raced to his 28th career victory in Pro Stock Motorcycle with a 7.239 at 185.51 holeshot final round result over Hector Arana Jr. on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. The current Pro Stock Motorcycle points leader earned his first win of the season and third at Bandimere Speedway.

“In the final, I could hear him next to me,” said Krawiec, a three-time world champ. “I will say one thing; I knew I had to be about .020 on the Tree, and I was .025. I usually don’t race that way. I don’t usually have to push that hard, but this year I do. I really didn’t want the final to be that close, but I couldn’t ask for any better. It always makes the driver look good to win on a holeshot.”

Recent Chicago winner Arana Jr. raced his Lucas Oil Buell past Freddie Camarena, Steve Johnson and defending world champ and 2014 event winner Andrew Hines to reach the final. Arana Jr. sits second in points, trailing Krawiec by 36.

The NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series moves to Sonoma, Calif. for the second of three stops during the NHRA Western Swing for the NHRA Sonoma Nationals, July 31-Aug. 2.

SATURDAY - J. FORCE, DIXON, JOHNSON AND KRAWIEC POWER TO NO. 1 QUALIFIERS AT BANDIMERE

John Force earned his 154th career No. 1 qualifier in Funny Car Saturday at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

Larry Dixon (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were No. 1 qualifiers of their categories at the 14th of 24 events in the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season and the first of three events on the NHRA Western Swing.

Force powered his PEAK Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS to a track record 4.015 at 318.09 to earn the top qualifying position for the second time this season. He was also strong during Saturday’s two sessions, running low elapsed time of the day during the final pass of the night. Force has two wins this season and will race against John Hale in the opening round of eliminations on Sunday.

“When you run good, you stay at the end of the qualifying line and you get better conditions,” Force said of his final run of the night. “We didn’t know what we would run but we said, ‘This is not the conditions we’ll run tomorrow, but let’s see what we can do.’ I’m starting to build my brain trust again and I’m pretty excited about it. It’ll build your confidence but if you get jacked up around that tomorrow, you could get picked off by anybody.”

Tim Wilkerson qualified second with a 4.026 at 317.27 in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang and will face Jeff Diehl in round one. Jack Beckman, the 2012 world champ and two-time Denver winner, will start eliminations in the No. 3 spot with a 4.035 at 313.73 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T, earning him a matchup with Todd Simpson. Recent Chicago winner Tommy Johnson Jr. qualified fourth while 2009 world champ and defending event winner Robert Hight qualified fifth.

In Top Fuel, Dixon recorded a track record 3.791 at 326.63 in his C&J Energy Services dragster Friday night and that run held to earn him the No. 1 spot for the first time since 2011 and 52nd time of his career. Dixon, who has finished runner-up five times this season, is hoping to earn his first win of 2015 and third of his career at Bandimere. He will meet Scott Palmer in the first round.

“It was good information for us so we know how to better adjust the car for tomorrow’s conditions,” said Dixon, a three-time world champ. “Hopefully we can have some full pulls tomorrow. Bob Vandergriff has given us a great car with great equipment and great people to work on it. That’s really what it takes to win a race, qualify or contend for a championship. This was my crew chief, Mike Guger’s first No. 1 qualifier as a crew chief, so I’m really happy for him to be a part of it.”

Defending and eight-time world champ Tony Schumacher qualified second with a 3.796 at 325.37 in his U.S. Army dragster. Schumacher, the Top Fuel points leader and two-time winner at Bandimere will face Steve Chrisman in the first round. Brittany Force, the runner-up in Top Fuel at this event last season, qualified her Monster Energy dragster third with a 3.802 at a track record 326.95, earning a first round race with Terry McMillen. Steve Torrence and Doug Kalitta qualified fourth and fifth respectively.

Johnson raced to his 37th career No. 1 qualifier in Pro Stock and first of the 2015 season with a track record 6.877 at 200.29 in his Magneti Marelli Dodge Dart. Johnson, who has won six of the last eight races at Denver, is looking for his fourth consecutive win at the track. He will have a first round bye on Sunday and will meet the winner of No. 8 Bo Butner and No. 9 Drew Skillman in the second round.

“We were really gearing up for raceday tomorrow all day,” said Johnson, the 2012 Pro Stock world champ. “The first run we made a decent run and were lowest of the round by a little bit. Competition is getting tougher, getting closer and it’s going to be knockdown drag out tomorrow. Coming in here and running like we’ve run is what we set out to do.”

Charlotte winner Larry Morgan qualified his FireAde Chevy Camaro second with a 6.878 at 200.20 in his FireAde Chevy Camaro. He will face Joey Grose in the first round. Defending world champ Erica Enders earned the No. 3 seed with a 6.882 at 200.65 in her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro and will race Matt Hartford. Jonathan Gray qualified fourth while track speed record holder Shane Gray sits fifth. S. Gray’s Friday qualifying run was the first Pro Stock pass to reach the 200 mph mark at Bandimere Speedway.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, current points leader Krawiec rode to his first No. 1 qualifier of the 2015 season with a track record 7.169 at 186.10 on his Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, achieved on Friday. Krawiec, a two-time winner of this event, now has 24 career No. 1 qualifiers and is chasing his first win of the season. He will face Chaz Kennedy in the first round.

“It was obviously more of a tuning session for us,” said Krawiec, a three time world champion. “I didn’t think someone was going to the No. 1 spot and we weren’t really concerned with the No. 1 spot. We were concerned with the race-day tune-up. That’s what we’ve struggled with. We saw a direction in which we want to go tomorrow so I’m pretty confident. I’ve got a great motorcycle. As long as it can get me four very fast, consistent laps, I’ m good with that.”

Hector Arana Jr., coming off his first win of the season in Chicago, qualified second with a 7.182 at 187.55 on his Lucas Oil Buell. He will open eliminations against Fred Camarena. Four-time world champ and defending event winner Andrew Hines is third with a 7.201 at 184.47 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, setting up a first round race with two-time season winner Karen Stoffer. Hector Arana qualified fourth while Jim Underdahl will start as the No. 5 seed.

FRIDAY - DIXON, J. FORCE, JOHNSON AND KRAWIEC RACE TO QUALIFYING LEADS AT DENVER

Larry Dixon raced to the qualifying lead in Top Fuel Friday at the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway.

John Force (Funny Car), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders at the 14th of 24 events in the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season and the first of three events on the NHRA Western Swing.

Dixon recorded a track record 3.791-second pass at 326.63 mph in his C&J Energy Services dragster to earn the provisional lead. Dixon, who has been runner-up five times this season, has two career wins at Bandimere and is two sessions away from earning his 52nd career No. 1 qualifier.

“The car’s been running really well lately and we actually ran well here last year and used a lot of that data,” said Dixon, a three-time Top Fuel world champ. “We made a good run the first run and that allowed us to stand on the gas a little tonight to see if it would stick, and it just barely did. I’m really happy.”

Brittany Force, the runner-up in Top Fuel at this event last season, qualified second with a 3.802 at a track record 326.95 in her Monster Energy dragster. Steve Torrence powered his Capco Racing/Torrence Motorsports dragster to the provisional No. 3 spot with a 3.822 at 322.88. Doug Kalitta and eight-time and defending world champ Tony Schumacher sit fourth and fifth following the first two sessions.

J. Force, a 16-time world champ, powered his PEAK Antifreeze Chevy Camaro SS to a track record 4.015 at 318.09 to earn the qualifying lead in Funny Car. He leads the category with six wins at the track located just west of Denver. Force has two wins this season and is searching for his second top qualifying effort of the year.

“We have good luck up here on the mountain and we know how to make power so we’ve done really well here,” said Force, who reached the final at this race last season. “It makes you feel good. I’m really excited. Dead tired, beat up, got here but good to be back on this mountain. It was a great show for the fans and I love to hear them cheer. I couldn’t have had a better night.”

Tim Wilkerson qualified in the provisional second position with a 4.026 at 317.27 in his Levi, Ray & Shoup Ford Shelby Mustang. Jack Beckman, the 2012 world champ and two-time Denver winner, is currently in the No. 3 spot with a 4.035 at 313.73 in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T. Recent Chicago winner Tommy Johnson Jr. is fourth and 2009 world champ and defending event winner Robert Hight is fifth with two sessions remaining.

Johnson, the 2012 Pro Stock world champ, took the provisional No. 1 spot in Pro Stock with a track record 6.877 at 200.29 in his Magneti Marelli Dodge Dart. Johnson, who has six wins at the facility, has won this event for three consecutive years. He has 36 career No. 1 qualifiers and is looking for his first of the season.

“We knew he had three cars that were really fast and had to make perfect runs,” said Johnson, who won the most recent event in Chicago. “That last run was a perfect run to halftrack. The car got out of the groove and was almost spinning but was still able to pull it off. This Magneti Marelli team digs down and gets it done.”

Larry Morgan, the Charlotte winner, sits second with a 6.878 at 200.20 in his FireAde Chevy Camaro and is followed by defending world champ Erica Enders in third with a 6.882 at 200.65 in her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro. Jonathan Gray is currently qualified fourth while new track speed record holder Shane Gray sits fifth.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, current points leader Krawiec grabbed the qualifying lead with a track record 7.169 at 186.10 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Krawiec, a three-time world champion, is two sessions away from his 24th career No. 1 qualifier.

“All-in-all I think I made a really, very good run in the first session,” said Krawiec, a two-time winner of this event. “In the second session, we were probably a little aggressive with the track. I rattled the tires pretty hard and low. I have a great motorcycle and I’m excited to go into eliminations and the following days here. It should be good.”

Krawiec’s teammate, four-time world champ and defending event winner Andrew Hines is second with a 7.201 at 184.47 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson. Hector Arana powered his Lucas Oil Buell to the third spot with a 7.218 at 186.07, while his son, Hector Arana Jr., sits fourth with a 7.221 at 185.89, a track speed record.

Qualifying for the Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals resumes Saturday at 4 p.m. with the final two sessions to set the fields for Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations.
