2015 NHRA AAA FINALS - POMONA RESULTS

SUNDAY - WORSHAM AND HINES EARN TITLES; LANGDON, A. JOHNSON AND KRAWIEC JOIN WORSHAM AS EVENT WINNERS

Del Worsham claimed his second NHRA world championship title and first in Funny Car, and then raced to the event victory Sunday at the Auto Club NHRA Finals near Los Angeles.

Southern California native Worsham defeated Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship playoff rival Jack Beckman in the semifinals to secure the Funny Car season title at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona and become just the third driver in NHRA history, joining Kenny Bernstein and Gary Scelzi, to win world championships in both nitro categories. Worsham won the 2011 Top Fuel world championship.

Worsham managed to win the title while Don Schumacher Racing drivers Beckman, Tommy Johnson Jr. and Ron Capps all kept lowering the national elapsed time record throughout the day. Beckman finally claimed the 20-point bonus for the record at 3.884 seconds, but it wasn’t enough.

“When I put this trophy next to my other one at home it will be real,” said Worsham, who earned $500,000 from NHRA and Mello Yello for the championship. “Every time I looked up there was a Schumacher car sitting there in my face. I was nervous about it. I was counting points. I am not going to tell you it was like any other race, because it wasn’t. I know the points are the same as the first round at Charlotte, but the circumstances here were much greater.”

Worsham also powered his DHL Toyota Camry past Tony Pedregon and Robert Hight in earlier rounds before defeating Tommy Johnson Jr. in the final round to claim his fourth victory of the season and 38th of his career, including 30 in Funny Car.

“The cars were running so fast here this weekend that the record just became part of the equation,” Worsham said. “(Beckman) was making up points before we even started racing by setting the record. Today it came down to being head to head and I am grateful for the way it worked out.”

Meanwhile, Andrew Hines claimed his second consecutive and fifth overall world championship title in Pro Stock Motorcycle when his closest rival, Louisiana alligator farmer Jerry Savoie, lost in the second round. Hines, who pocketed $75,000 for the title, is the youngest driver in NHRA history to win five world championships and continues the amazing domination by the Vance & Hines team in the two-wheel category.

“My outstanding Harley-Davidson team did a great job of keeping me focused and keeping the pressure off of me,” said Hines, who won four races during the season atop his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson, including three in the Countdown playoffs. “It was awesome that my wife [Tanya] got to give me a kiss right before I ran, and thanks to my teammate for helping to get the job done. I guess we put the fear of Harley into them. Five championships is pretty awesome.”

Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock) and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) joined Worsham in the winner’s circle at the final playoff race of the NHRA Mello Yello Series Countdown to the Championship.

Langdon earned his second Top Fuel win of the season, sweeping both Wally trophies at this track for the second time in his career. Langdon, who won the season-opening Winternationals in the cockpit of an Alan Johnson Racing dragster, defeated Antron Brown in the final round in a Don Schumacher Racing machine. Langdon powered his Red Fuel dragster to a 3.715 at 332.43 to finish in front of the recently crowned world champion, who posted a 3.732 at 321.73 in his Matco Tools dragster.

“I love this track,” said Langdon, the 2013 world champ who now has 11 career victories. “It has always had a special place in my heart. I grew up right around the corner (Mira Loma, Calif.). I was always out here watching my heroes race. I have so many great memories out at this track. Luckily I’ve had a good career here. It makes it sweet to share these special memories with your family and friends.”

In Pro Stock, Johnson claimed his second win of the season and 26th of his career, by holding off Vincent Nobile in the final round. Johnson used a quicker reaction time and drove his Magneti Marelli/Mopar Dodge Dart to a 6.541 at 210.18 to take the win over Nobile, who clocked a quicker, but losing effort of 6.540 at 211.93 in his Mountain View Tire Chevy Camaro.

“We had struggled during the entire Countdown, never winning more than two rounds a race and losing twice in the first round,” Johnson said. “We also struggled during qualifying and in eliminations. But right before the final, we discovered that a torsion bar was bent. We fixed that, and the car went straight down the track.”

Johnson says he is happy to win the last Pro Stock race featuring carbureted engines. He added that his plans are currently 50-50 regarding whether he will compete in 2016 when NHRA introduces the new-look Pro Stock class with electronic fuel injection, among other significant class changes.

“This was a very special win because it will be remembered as the end of an era,” said Johnson, the 2012 Pro Stock world champ. “To do this today the way we did it by digging down deep and getting it done was very special.”

Krawiec closed the Pro Stock Motorcycle season with a victory and earned a second place points finish when he defeated two-time champ Matt Smith in the final round. Krawiec rode his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson to a 6.846 at 192.58 to finish in front of Smith’s Victory Gunner, which trailed with a 6.888 at 194.21. It was Krawiec’s fourth victory of the season, fourth at Pomona and 31st of his career.

“I’ve been to eight finals in a row here in Pomona, so this track has treated me well,” Krawiec said. “It is also a big deal for us to get the 75th win for Harley-Davidson.”

The 23-race 2016 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season opens Feb. 11-14 with the Circle K NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

SATURDAY - WORSHAM, BECKMAN, JOHNSON JR. TO DECIDE FUNNY CAR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP; HINES, SAVOIE, KRAWIEC BATTLING FOR PRO STOCK MOTORCYCLE CROWN AT AUTO CLUB NHRA FINALS

Del Worsham, Jack Beckman and Tommy Johnson Jr. will decide the NHRA Funny Car world championship Sunday at the Auto Club NHRA Finals.

Worsham and Beckman, who have battled for the title during the six-race Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, gave fans at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona today a sneak preview of what tomorrow’s 11 a.m. eliminations could bring by closing out qualifying with a powerful side-by-side 3.89-second race.

Series leader Worsham will take a 36-point lead over Beckman into the final race of the season. Friday qualifying leader Johnson, who is a long shot at 96 points back in his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger, needs to have his two rivals lose early and then win the race and set a national record to have any chance at the title.

Worsham, who qualified third in his DHL Toyota Camry, will meet Tony Pedregon in the opening round and No. 2 qualifier Beckman will face Chad Head. Beckman, who entered the playoffs as the top seed and had a record-setting regular season at the controls of his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge Charger R/T and had the quicker car in tonight’s thrilling final run, will need to go two rounds more than Worsham, who got hot with three victories in the Countdown playoffs, to win the series crown.

“It was a great qualifying effort for the DHL Toyota team,” said Worsham, who could meet Beckman in a critical semifinal matchup if the two drivers advance through the first two rounds. “We have the Camry running strong and I am proud of our effort. We will go into tomorrow and lay it all out on the line.”

All three drivers made runs during qualifying that bring the possibility of a national E.T. record into play. With weather conditions forecasted to be in the mid-60s on Sunday, conditions should set up perfect for one of the teams to set the mark and grab the 20-point bonus.

"It's an unbelievable time to be a fan of nitro Funny Car,” Beckman said. “I really like the position that we are in. It’s nerve racking because we aren’t leading the points, we have to be two rounds better than another car to capture the championship. And this is the scenario where it’s fourth down, the clock has almost run out and you’re going to get the ball again and you have to be perfect. And I think we can be perfect.”

Ron Capps (Funny Car), Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Greg Anderson (Pro Stock) and Jerry Savoie (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were No. 1 qualifiers in their categories at the NHRA season-finale near Los Angeles.

Newly crowned Top Fuel world champ Brown took his seventh No. 1 of the season and 44th of his career by posting a 3.721 at 326.71 in his Matco Tools dragster. He will meet veteran racer Cory McClenathan in round one as he goes for his eighth win of the season.

“We just want to go out there and compete,” Brown said. “Coming into this race as the champs we get to enjoy this with the fans. That’s what we’ve been doing this weekend. We are trying to suck it all in and enjoy this moment because they don’t come very often.”

Capps, who was eliminated from championship contention after Worsham and Beckman made a qualifying attempt Friday, took his first No. 1 position of the season and 17th of his career with a career-best performance of 3.886 at 326.87 in his NAPA Auto Parts Dodge Charger.

“It’s an E-ticket ride right now in Funny Car and you have to be on your game and have a lot of luck,” said Capps of his blazing track record run. He will race local favorite Jeff Arend in the opening round.

Anderson powered to his fifth No. 1 of the season and 80th of his career in Pro Stock, clocking a 6.490 at 213.03 in his Summit Racing Chevrolet Camaro. It is his ninth No. 1 at Pomona and he will face Matt Hartford in the opening round as he tries to lock down the second position in the points order behind recently crowned Pro Stock world champ Erica Enders.

“The attitude has changed, it’s just relax and have fun,” Anderson said. “This is one of my favorite places to race. When the sun goes down it’s a magical place to race. You can run fast and set records here. We got more aggressive tonight. Even though we’re not going to walk away as the world champion it’s been a good year. We can close out the year with a good day and get a win at the last race in a carburetor for Pro Stock.”

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, championship hopeful Savoie rode to his third No. 1 qualifying performance in a row and fourth in the Countdown playoffs, posting a 6.803 at 197.51 on his White Alligator Racing Suzuki. He will meet Mike Berry in the first round as he tries to overcome a 38 point deficit to series leader Andrew Hines.

“Things are clicking really well,” said Louisiana alligator farmer Savoie, who cut series leader Andrew Hines advantage from 46 to 38 during qualifying. “Tim (Kulungian, crew chief) has a good handle on the bike. We got a little aggressive and we tried a new combination and it freed up a little more horsepower. To be a true champion you have to be consistent and we really haven’t been this weekend until today. We’ll just see how it plays out tomorrow.”

Series leader Hines qualified fifth with a 6.837 at 195.73 on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson and he will meet Michal Ray in round one. Title long shot Eddie Krawiec qualified eighth and will face Scotty Pollacheck in the opener.

Savoie needs to go two rounds farther than Hines to win the championship. Krawiec needs Savoie and Hines to lose in the first round and then go on to win and set a national record. Hines just needs to maintain his position and hope his two rivals lose early. All three riders are on the same side of the ladder, which will make things interesting for sure.

Friday leader Karen Stoffer dropped to second in the final order with a best of 6.823 at 196.36 and will face Jim Underdahl in the opening round.

FRIDAY - JOHNSON JR., B. TORRENCE, S. GRAY AND STOFFER LEAD QUALIFYING AT AUTO CLUB NHRA FINALS AT POMONA

Funny Car world championship long shot Tommy Johnson Jr. raced to the qualifying lead Friday at the Auto Club NHRA Finals.

Billy Torrence (Top Fuel), Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Karen Stoffer (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were leaders in their categories at the final playoff race in the six-race NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Johnson powered his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger R/T to a track record performance of 3.917 seconds at 324.67 mph at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona near Los Angeles to take the top spot as he pursues his fourth No.1 position of the season.

“We knew the performance of the car was there and the guys have done a good job of picking at it and getting better and better,” Johnson said. “You’ve gotta win the race. Points are great. We are a long shot. We need to try and win the race. We need to set the record and win the race and have a little luck where those guys have problems. We now have a back-up for the national record and things are going as planned.”

With the effort, Johnson gained two points on series leader Del Worsham. Meanwhile, Worsham, who qualified seventh in his DHL Toyota Camry, and Jack Beckman, who qualified fifth in his Infinite Hero Foundation Dodge, are both in front of Johnson in the series standings, who now trails the leader by 94. Following the first session Beckman was able to trim Worsham’s lead by two and now trials by 36.

“The last three or four races I’ve run a career best, so [crew chief] John Collins has been good about getting better each run,” Johnson said. “I think there’s more out there than the 3.91. I haven’t paid a lot of attention to what Jack and Del have been doing. I am proud of the season we’ve had no matter what happens. If we could win it, it would be outstanding. I am proud of how far we’ve come and what we’re going to do next year.”

Defending world champ Matt Hagan qualified second in his Mopar Charger with a 3.923 at a track record speed of 329.50, while two-time Pomona winner Ron Capps was third in his NAPA Charger with a 3.937 at 325.69.

In Top Fuel, Torrence moved into position to earn his first No. 1 qualifying position by powering to a career-best effort of 3.726 at 331.61 in his Capco Contractors dragster.

“The guys have been working hard to get both cars on the same page,” Torrence said. “I’ve been benefitting from getting the right set up. Both cars have been running real close. It’s great to be out here. I’ve got a lot of friends and a lot of folks who’ve been rooting for us here.”

Larry Dixon qualified second in his C&J Energy Services dragster with a 3.737 at 327.19 and Tony Schumacher is third in his U.S. Army dragster with a 3.745 at 324.59. Newly crowned Top Fuel world champ Antron Brown is fourth after two sessions, posting a 3.758 at 324.90 in his Matco Tools dragster.

Gray led Pro Stock with an effort of 6.509 at 212.79 in his Gray Manufacturing Chevy Camaro. Gray is trying to improve on his 10th place points position in the factory hot rod category.

“It would be awesome for team morale to go into the off-season with a No. 1, and even better to win the race,” Gray said. “With Erica Enders having already clinched the title, there is nothing to lose and so we can go for it. The more you can relax, the better you can be.”

Vincent Nobile qualified second with a 6.510 at 212.93 in his NAPA Auto Parts Camaro and was followed by rookie sensation Drew Skillman, who sits third in his Ray Skillman Chevrolet Camaro with a 6.512 at 213.06. Enders is fifth overall with a 6.516 at 210.05 in his Elite Motorsports Camaro.

Stoffer, a two-time winner this season, led the two-wheel class with a performance of 6.823 seconds at 196.36 mph on her BIG St. Charles Motorsports Suzuki.

“We want to finish the season off strong,” Stoffer said. “We haven’t traditionally done that. It would be huge for us to do good at this final race and knock that gremlin off our back to finish strong here late in the season. We had a safe run on that first one to get down the track and make sure our brakes work well. We were able to do it on the second hit when we ran the full quarter-mile. I don’t think it will hold. This class is so competitive. The track stayed consistent. Tomorrow is going to be better. There is a little more out there. That 82 isn’t the best we can do. Hopefully we can step it up and meet everybody. If I could win this race this weekend it would truly be a dream season for me.”

The three Pro Stock Motorcycle championship contenders all qualified in the top half of the field, with series leader Andrew Hines in fifth, second place Jerry Savoie fourth and third-place Eddie Krawiec eighth. Savoie, who earned one qualifying bonus point for his third-place effort in round one, trails Hines by 45 points. Krawiec is 83 back.

Chip Ellis qualified second on his PiranaZ Buell with a 6.830 at 196.42 and defending event winner Hector Arana Jr. is third on his Lucas Oil Buell with a 6.833 at 197.57.

Qualifying continues Saturday with sessions at noon and 3 p.m. Sunday’s eliminations are scheduled for 11 a.m.
