The carnage piled up on Sunday during the final day of the NMRA/NSCA Super Bowl at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

Pro Street racer Mark Micke fought a stuck throttle and sideswiped the top-end retaining wall and Spiro Pappas, making test passes in his ADRL Extreme 10.5 Pontiac, caught fire and burned up his new engine and the front end of his immaculate Pontiac GTO.

Neither driver was hurt, physically.

“Hurt feelings and hurt pride,” Micke admitted were his injuries.

Earlier in the day Micke had established one end of a new world record. The crash ended his day and prevented any chance of backing up the record.

“I don’t think it’s too bad,” Micke explained. “It’s gonna need a new front end. The rear might need a little more bondo and duct tape. The car is fine and it didn’t hurt the chassis at all.”

Micke said the car will go to Jerry Bickel’s this week, and be completed in time to compete in the ADRL St. Louis event.

As for Pappas, he believes an oil leak ignited the fire on his ride. This was the first outing with the new engine.

Eyewitnesses said the engine popped just past the eighth-mile and the car subsequently caught fire. The car suffered extensive cosmetic damage.

Pappas didn’t say definitely how long his mishap would remove him from competition.

“Hopefully forever,” said a disappointed Pappas. “Knowing me … maybe a couple of weeks.”

SUNDAY MORNING NOTEBOOK - OF RECORDS, INCORRECT GAS AND TESTING

POTENTIAL TO THE MAX – Mark Micke entered Sunday’s first round of eliminations with every intention of shooting for the stars at the NMRA/NSCA Super Bowl hosted by Route 66 Raceway in Joliet, Ill.

In the first round of eliminations, the Jefferson City, Mo.-based driver posted a blistering 6.241, 226.34, the kind of number he’d sought throughout qualifying, defeating Vinny Demieri. He struggled throughout qualifying and ended the weather-abbreviated two sessions as a dismal 12th qualifier.

“We knew we were going to run a number, the air just screwed up,” said Micke, of the atmospheric conditions that were as favorable as 1300 feet above sea-level could get. “We made a bunch of changes to the back of the car, some tune-up, and it came around. We were expecting to run a 6.24 or 6.25. We have a baseline and hopefully we can knock it down some more.”

Micke planned to use favorable conditions on Sunday to reel in a 6.18 or 6.19; a number he said was realistic for his combination. That kind of a run would be nearly a tenth of a second quicker than the 6.279 recorded by Troy Coughlin in Saturday’s qualifying.

Micke credits a new engine program with giving him the confidence to offer up such a bold prediction.

“It’s the new engine program,” Micke said. “It has so much power that we had to detune it. We took 500 horsepower away from it just to get down the track. This air is a killer.”

GAS PAINS - Doug Sikora had the wrong kind of gas on Friday.

Actually, his 2000 Mustang did.

That miscue didn’t stop the Barstow, Ca.-based Pro Outlaw racer from embarking on a new eliminator world record during Friday’s qualifying and restablishing the mark on Saturday during the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl in Joliet, Ill.

Sikora competes primarily on the Pacific Street Car Association series and made the decision to travel to the Midwest in order to compete in one of several combined NMRA and NMCA shows in 2009.

Sikora doesn’t use unfamiliarity with the rules as an excuse for Friday’s miscue and disallowed run.

Sikora had oxygenated gas in the car, a VP Race Fuels brand, and while there’s nothing illegal about the fuel itself, if you run in Pro Outlaw, the spec fuel is VP’s C-16.

“At fuel check, I told them it was illegal and that I would change the fuel and make another run,” Sikora explained. “We worked on it for five or six hours draining it and cleaning it. We checked it Saturday morning and it was fine.”

Sikora ran a 6.69 and passed fuel check.

“We have C-16 gas in it now,” Sikora admitted.

Due to an uneven amount of cars, Sikora was awarded a first round bye run and used the free pass to lower the record to a 6.68.

“We expected to go high 6.70s,” Sikora said. “We thought the air would be better than back in California. Thought the track would be a little better too. I didn’t expect to go that fast but I’m happy we did.”
The feat is impressive considering that Sikora runs a 2,750-pound Mustang motivated by a centrifugal supercharged 400-inch Ford engine. The car is equipped with a powerglide transmission.

“I expected the car to run good but I also expected everyone else to be in the 6.70s too. I wasn’t expecting the 6.60 runs,” Sikora concluded.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT – Two of ADRL’s front running Extreme 10.5 runners made the trip to Joliet to test out their cars during the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl.

Billy Glidden entered the Pro Street division with his Mickey Thompson-sponsored Pontiac GTO while Spiro Pappas brought out his Jerry Bickel-built 2009 Pontiac GXP to make a few shakedown runs, classified only as an exhibition vehicle.

Glidden qualified fourth with a 6.682 elapsed time at 177.62 miles per hour.

While Glidden made a few strong runs, he declined to comment on whether he’s had a favorable test session or not. He further declined to discuss whether he will race next weekend’s ADRL U.S. Drags in Dinwiddie, Va.

Brian Hicks eliminated Glidden in the first round after carding a perfect reaction time.

Pappas came to Joliet intent on taking advantage of the national event conditions to break in a new engine.

“Finally, we’ve got the motor that the car was originally designed for,” Pappas told ADRL.us. “We’ve been using the engine out of the Camaro (his previous race car) up until now. This one’s a little bigger and has a new block, new heads, a nice sheet-metal manifold as opposed to the cast manifold we were using before; Graham Jones at Fast Times did a great job with it.”

SATURDAY NOTEBOOK - COUGHLIN ESTABLISHES NEW PRO STREET MARK

seconds at 223.76 mph in his JEGS.com Pontiac GXP to claim top qualifying honors at the fourth annual Nitto Tire NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street Legal Drag Racing at Route 66 Raceway.

"The car is 100-percent better than it's ever been," Coughlin said. "We took the engine and had it freshened up after the last race and it's definitely stronger. Everything is working better and it's showing on the track.

"To come out and run a string of passes like we have -- a 6.32, a 6.27, a 6.33, and a 6.32 -- so far is outstanding, let alone running a world record. No one has been as consistent as we have been and that's very satisfying. I feel as though we have a great opportunity to win this race."

Coughlin entered this race second in the Edelbrock Pro Street points and will pick up a round's worth of points for setting the national record. He also won the first round of eliminations Saturday night to advance to the quarterfinals, which will begin Sunday morning.

His first-round victory was an easy one after his opponent rolled the lights and was disqualified at the starting line. Nevertheless, Coughlin posted a 6.327 at 222.95 mph to earn lane choice going into the quarterfinals.

"I haven't had this much fun at the drag races in a long time," said Coughlin, the NMCA Pro Street runner-up in 2006. "It's hard to describe the confidence you have as a driver when you have a racecar and crew like this. You just pull up to the line knowing good things are about to happen."

This weekend's event marks the midway point of the seven-race Edelbrock series.

FRIDAY NOTEBOOK -COOL CONDITIONS AND HOT RACING INVADES ROUTE 66

FINISHED FOR THE DAY - Cool temperatures, combined with a lot of breakage, and a curfew at Rt. 66 Raceway combined to halt qualifying at the end of the first round for both NMCA and NMRA competitors. Action will pick up as scheduled Saturday with the final round of qualifying, followed by the first round of eliminations.

COUGHLIN INCREASES NMCA INVOLVEMENT - Troy Coughlin is pulling double duty this weekend racing both Pro Street and Nostalgia

The NHRA Pro Stock turned Pro Modified and now Pro Street racer from Delaware, Ohio, got off to a rough start when the Nostalgia Pro Street car he’s racing suffered a nitrous fire just off the starting line.

“I guess you’re going to have these things blow up every once in a while on the starting line,” Coughlin said. “There’s nothing Brian and Mike won’t be able to fix and put us back in the program tomorrow.”

Coughlin, whose siblings race NHRA, has found a home in the National Muscle Car Association with his Pro Street GXP, and has increased his involvement by driving a Camaro for Bryan Metz and Mike Rees in the Nostalgia Pro Street division.

The relationship between Coughlin and Metz dates back to the time when Coughlin raced on the NHRA Pro Modified circuit. Metz worked on Coughlin’s crew, even parking his own car for two seasons to concentrate on working with Coughlin.

Three weeks ago, Metz extended an invitation to Coughlin to drive his Camaro. Coughlin accepted largely because of the nitrous factor.

“I’ve always loved nitrous and I think it’s the coolest power adder out there, and I’ve raced blowers and turbo. It’s pretty cool when you push that button and the engine gets it.”

SCARRY BACK IN THE GROOVE - Nothing tests the mettle of a drag racer more than crashing a race car in the first race of the season.

Conrad Scarry is all smiles after crashing and rebuilding a new car. He's currently the No. 1 qualifier in the Pro Outlaw division at the NMRA/NSCA Super Bowl in Joliet, Ill.

“The car was a total loss and we built a completely new car,” Scarry said. “We built the new car in about 11 weeks.”

An eleven week race car fabrication from top to bottom requires the dedication of a crew willing to work tireless hours and manufacturers willing to pitch in as well with extra parts.

“We built everything in-house,” Scarry added. “We built the car in-house … Randy Allwater, Keith Allwater and their dad Don. Hank Hill was called in and we had a lot of help media wise … Strange, VFN, Mickey Thompson Tires and between the community and ourselves, we were able to come out here and go racing again.”

The new Mustang has been like any other new car, buggy; however it has show promise, having run a 6.88 in its first test outing at Milan Dragway located outside of Detroit.

“We had a few bugs to work out of it,” Scarry said. “It’s showing some good signs. It has potential.”

No two cars are just alike and for Scarry, this new Mustang has its own unique personality.

“We had the bigger motor in the car last year … not really anything different with the driveline,” Scarry explained. “This car is a little stiffer than the other one … a little more rigid. It has a few more bars in it to stiffen it up a bit. The other car was a good car and won us three world championships. It just wasn’t as updated as this one.”

DRAG RADIAL TOP GUN

David Guy, of Dillsburg, Pa., made the most of his lone qualifying attempt by landing atop the Drag Radial field with a 7.973 elapsed time at 182.72 miles per hour.
