WATSON RACING TEAMS WITH CHRIS HOLBROOK AND THE WORLD'S QUICKEST PRODUCTION CAR!
It has already been a season of shattered records and stunning achievement for Redford, Michigan, drag racer Chris Holbrook. At the wheel of his Varsity Ford dealership-sponsored 2013 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, the past World Champion began his 2013 racing campaign by clocking a quarter-mile run of 8.504 seconds at a speed of 160.68 miles per hour at the opening event of National Mustang Racers Association in Bradenton, Florida. The effort was more than a quarter-second quicker than any previous performance by a production automobile in factory trim and Holbrook became the first driver to break 160 mph in a stock drag racing vehicle.
One week later, Holbrook entered the National Hot Rod Association's Amalie Oil Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, and won the AAA/SA class championship while producing the quickest elapsed time in the history of the NHRA's Stock Eliminator division at 8.68 seconds. Then, as owner of Holbrook Racing Engines, Chris beamed with pride when the overall Stock championship found two HRE customers battling for the title. Bo Butner, another previous World Champion, defeated Charley Downing in a race which featured two Ford Mustang Cobra Jets powered by engines personally prepared by Holbrook.

Most drag racing fans who are familiar with my story, know that I worked as a photographer for many years before my own racing career finally got underway in 1986. Once I started racing, I put away my cameras and focused (pun intended) solely on my career. All of my past work was no longer important to me. But even though I no longer cared about my past, I did manage to lug around 11 big plastic bins of negatives and transparencies from the mid eighties all over the country. They've been stored in numerous storage units, moved from Atlanta to Indy back in 1994, stacked up in the not-so-dry 1932 era basement of my first house, and most recently, stored in the garage next to all of my and my family's cycling and ski equipment out here in Oregon. How I kept them, and why, I am not sure, but, boy, am I glad I did. I kept all of my camera equipment too, for the most part, although I did sell my 500mm lens to noted photographer and fellow Super Stock Magazine contributor Francis Butler after we had blown something up in the funny car in 1990. I last did a professional shoot (for WInston) in 1989 to raise some quick money when Gary Evans and I formed our own team, Bazemore Evans Racing. I next shot our car in 1996 for the cover of National Dragster. That was it until 2005 when my son Dashiell was born. In 15 years, I had picked up a camera exactly one time.
Brandon Bernstein's Top Fuel runner-up finish at last weekend's Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway marked a high point this season for the ProtectTheHarvest.com/MAVTV Dragster team.
Throughout his three-year career in the tough NHRA Pro Stock division, Vincent Nobile has consistently been able to avoid losing in the first round of eliminations. In 52-career starts, the NAPA/Mountain View Performance driver has failed to advance past the opening round just 13 times, including last weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment Southern Nationals. Nobile was not able to make a good run in the NAPA/Mountain View Dodge Avenger during the rain-delayed event, and lost a frustrating round against Jason Line.
At the last stop on the ADRL tour Team Aruba was having one of the best outings of their career. They secured the number one qualifying spot early and hung onto it for the duration. Unfortunately, Mother Nature moved in in the form of rain and stopped Team Aruba from defending their position in eliminations. Now, with the ADRL Spring Drags IV approaching this weekend, the Team hopes to claim the coveted pole position again, and this time take it to the winner’s circle.
A victory at Heartland Park Topeka one year ago ended a nearly six-year winless slump for veteran Top Fuel driver David Grubnic in the highly competitive 8,000-horsepower Top Fuel category in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series.
Doug Kalitta racked up a personal milestone during the NHRA Summit Southern Nationals. The veteran driver of the Mac Tools Top Fuel dragster, scored round win No. 450 at the expense of a familiar rival -- Tony Schumacher. Additionally, the monumental win secured his second semi-final appearance of 2013 and the 59th of his career.
