hossler alexA pair of Al-Anabi Racing drivers headlined the top qualifiers in the premiere categories at the ADRL Spring Drags in Cordova, Ill. Alex Hossler [Pro Extreme] and Steve Jackson [Pro Nitrous] carry the No. 1 seeds into Sunday's final eliminations.

Hossler, driving a supercharged 1969 Camaro, thundered to a 3.677, 204.48 in the final session to snatch the top spot away from Brandon Snider, who led the first three sessions.

“We struggled a lot in testing,” said Hossler. “We struggled here in qualifying and got down the track on the first run. It ran a 3.71, which was nothing like what we wanted. The track threw us a lot of curveballs. I wouldn’t say we hit it on the final run, but we got a lot closer than what we had been running.

super stockWith the threat of severe weather on Sunday, for the second event in a row NHRA officials elected to run sportsman eliminations to completion a day early.

This did little to slow Tim Nicholson [Super Stock] and Austin Williams [Stock] in their bid to win at the NHRA Kansas Nationals in Topeka, Kan.

Nicholson, racing a GT/I 1966 Chevy II, stopped Harvey Emmons in the final round with a 10.314, 120.84.

JOHN FORCE: OF OLD DOGS, SHARKS AND JUST COMING TO RACE

Written by Bobby Bennett; Photo by Steven Wilson.

You might get away with poking an old dog once or twice, but the third time he’s likely to snap or bite. John Force provided an equivalent object lesson during the third session of qualifying.

With a No. 12 standing in the Funny Car points, a ranking unbecoming of a 15-time champion, Force stepped up in a big way to deliver a big bite in Q-3 at Topeka with a track record 4.043 at 313.22 miles per hour to claim the No. 1 qualifying position.

D'APRILE DEDICATES X-DRL WIN TO CANCER VICTIM, TEAM MEMBERS

Written by Ian Tocher.

DAprile lanesPro Extreme star Tommy D'Aprile was racing for more than the win May 18, in the X-DRL Bash on the Bayou at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, LA. He was racing in memory of Elizabeth Landry, wife of drag racing fan and part-time crew member Melvin "Fascat" Landry. Elizabeth passed away from cancer one month earlier and after D'Aprile defeated Quain Stott in the final round he immediately dedicated the win to her memory and to his friend, Fascat, who was in attendance for the race near his Louisiana home.

"Elizabeth was such a special lady; she inspired me," D'Aprile said. "Fascat, too, for him to even be out here, you could see he was still in pain, but he stuck around long enough to see us win. I put their names in my phone so I would see them when I got out of the car down there. I wanted to think of them both."

LANGDON WINS TOPEKA TOP FUEL POLE

Written by Tracy Renck; Photos by Steven Wilson.

Tricky race tracks are hard to handle for some NHRA Top Fuel teams.

The Al-Anabi Racing team managed by Alan Johnson Racing relishes those conditions, and Shawn Langdon proved that Saturday.

Langdon clocked a 3.767 elapsed time at 322.50 mph at Heartland Park Topeka track to capture the pole at the Kansas Nationals.
This was Langdon’s third pole this season and the ninth of his career.

pnAfter several years of trying, Robert Mathis finally scored his first Pro Nitrous event win May 18, in the X-DRL Bash on the Bayou at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, LA.

"Oh man, it feels good, but to be honest I don't think it's really hit me yet. It's been a hard day, it's been rough, but everyone worked so hard to make this happen," said Mathis, who lives in Baker, FL. "I can't thank everyone enough, from my crew to everyone at Nelson Competition who's been keeping my motor running, it's been hard, but it feels good."

EDWARDS KEEPS TOPEKA PRO STOCK POLE

Mike Edwards hasn’t had the best luck this weekend at Heartland Park Topeka as he has struggled through more than his share of engine troubles.

Friday, Edwards experienced engine woes and Saturday he had transmission problems.

Through all the adversity, however, Edwards still captured the Pro Stock pole position thanks to Friday’s 6.618-second time at 208.55 mph lap.

NO NEW CAR BLUES FOR GOFORTH

xpsJust three weeks earlier Extreme Pro Stock (XPS) driver Dean Goforth had stood in the pits at Tennessee's Bristol Dragway watching his battered '09 Pontiac GXP being offloaded from a flatbed truck after a severe crash in qualifying for the rained-out X-DRL event there. On May 18, he stood in victory lane at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, LA, having won the X-DRL Bash on the Bayou in his first race appearance with a brand-new Jerry Haas-built 2013 Camaro.

It marked the second time the Goforth family team had driven a Haas car to victory in its debut event, as Goforth's son, Cary, the reigning back-to-back ADRL Extreme Pro Stock world champion, did the same in 2011 at Martin, Michigan, with his current 2010 GXP.

K&N SPRING FLING 20s DAY 2 RESULTS

Written by Jon DiBartolomeo.

springflingsaturday02In the past four years, the K&N Spring Fling 20s presented by Sparco has reset the height of the bar when it comes to successful bracket races. Beginning in 2010 with almost 200 races cars on the property, the event has grown in not only attendance but stature as well. From the size of the purse, to the tens of thousands of dollars in giveaways and ancillary races within the race, along with the live Internet feed through the www.bracketraces.com website, it’s the race everyone wants to be a part of.

Saturday’s Plan C was to complete Friday’s Nitroplate $40,000 combined race following by starting Sunday’s $30-grander. Best laid plans though always take a back seat when Mother Nature intervenes. Morning showers dripped persistently enough to cause racing to be delayed until well after noon-time. The Bristol Dragway staff did what they do best though and had the race track in tip-top shape to complete the second round and begin the third before more showers delayed eliminations.

D'APRILE HEADLINES X-DRL WINNERS ON THE BAYOU

pxTommy D’Aprile now has his first X-treme Drag Racing League (X-DRL) win.

The Pro X-treme standout put together one impressive performance after another during Saturday’s Bash On The Bayou at No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, La., finishing off his memorable day and the X-DRL’s third-ever event with a 3.673 at 207.34 mph in the finals against Quain Stott.

DISASTER STRIKES DURING X-DRL TD SEMI-FINALS

Written by Ian Tocher.

td crashThe first serious incident of the weekend at the X-DRL Bash on the Bayou came Saturday night in the semi-finals of Top Dragster as Laramie Reid of Owl Park, TX, crashed at the end of his run against number-one qualifier Michael Kile. Adding insult to injury, Reid actually would have gone on to contest the event win against Keith Raftery in the final as Kile broke out by one-hundredth of a second.

Reid, the 24-year-old younger brother of X-DRL Pro Extreme racer Randell Reid, was in just his second race with the car, though he's been driving dragsters for nine years and currently leads IHRA Div. 4 points in both Super Comp and Super Gas with other cars.
