FORD WINNERS CROWNED AT FINAL NMCA/NMRA ALL-STAR EVENT IN ATLANTA

Continuing the 2021 Holley NMRA Ford Nationals drag racing series with the second stop of the tour for the season, the 13th Annual Scoggin Dickey Parts Center NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals presented by MAHLE Motorsport at Atlanta Dragway over the weekend of April 9-11 also marked the final time that either series will run at the facility, as the property has been sold and is slated for demolition at the end of the year.

With the threat of rain looming and the forecast showing Saturday as almost a guaranteed washout, race officials pushed hard to get two rounds of qualifying completed on Friday. However, the day’s events ran so smoothly that the schedule actually completed early, and a third session was run on Friday as well. Saturday morning broke with skies clearer than expected, so qualifying continued until afternoon showers ultimately forced race officials to call the day a wash.

GWYNN ENJOYS THE SPECTACLE OF PDRA RACING

The PDRA's 2021 season kicked off Friday with East Coast Nationals qualifying playing to a sizable crowd of fans and a pit area overflowing with racers.

Among those on hand for Friday's action was former NHRA Top Alcohol Dragster champion Darrell Gwynn. It was the Floridian's first look at PDRA competition as well as his first peek at GALOT Motorsports Park. To say he was impressed would be an understatement.

"I sat in the bleachers a little bit ago and watched the Pro Mods. I can't get enough of them," he said of the PDRA's Pro Nitrous and Pro Boost divisions. "They really, really put on a helluva show, with the front end in the air most of the way down the racetrack. That's good racing.

CAMP, HALSEY, POWERS HEADLINE PDRA EAST COAST NATIONALS WINNERS

After Johnny Camp earned his first Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) victory at GALOT Motorsports Park last fall, the Penske/PRS Pro Boost presented by WS Construction racer earned his second victory in the series Saturday night at the East Coast Nationals presented by FuelTech.

Similarly, 2020 DragWars winners Jim Halsey (Switzer Dynamics Pro Nitrous) and Travis Davis (Drag 965 Pro Nitrous Motorcycle) kicked off the 2021 PDRA season with additional wins at GALOT. Chris Powers (Liberty’s Gears Extreme Pro Stock presented by AED Competition), Jimmy Pelcarsky ($hameless Racing Pro Outlaw 632) and Jesse Lambert (Drag 965 Pro Street) also picked up pro class victories at the East Coast Nationals.

BANDIMERE SPEEDWAY GOING FULL-SPEED AHEAD WITH 2021 SCHEDULE

Last year was a hectic one for Bandimere Speedway in Morrison, Colo., outside of Denver.

The track was in an ongoing battle with officials from the Jefferson County Health Department about having to be shut down because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Fast-forward and John “Sporty” Bandimere III said the speedway is moving full-speed ahead with its 2021 schedule.

HALSEY, TUTTEROW, CARR PACE PDRA EAST COAST NATIONALS QUALIFYING

Defending world champion Jim Halsey picked up right where he left off at the end of the 2020 season by qualifying No. 1 in Switzer Dynamics Pro Nitrous at the season-opening Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) East Coast Nationals presented by FuelTech. Driving his Brandon Switzer-tuned ’68 Camaro, Halsey recorded a 3.65-second pass at 207.08 mph in the third and final qualifying session at GALOT Motorsports Park Friday night.

LIMITED SPECTATORS TICKETS AVAILABLE FOR RESCHEDULED MARCH MEET

Famoso Dragstrip has announced that a limited supply of spectator tickets are now available for the Good Vibrations March Meet, presented by Lucas Oil, taking place May 27-30, 2021

The state of California announced that as of April 1st it will allow venues to have a limited number of spectators. Famoso hasn’t been able to have any spectators attend drag races since last spring when shutdowns due to the pandemic occurred.

“We are so excited to have spectators at this year’s March Meet,” said Blake Bowser, Vice President of Famoso Dragstrip. “Race fans need to act fast though, because at this time we are limited to 20% capacity and this supply of tickets will sell out quickly.”

SNAKE BACK IN THE SADDLE FOR DESERT MARATHON

Don’t even consider that, at age 80, Don “The Snake” Prudhomme is too old for off-road racing.

And not just a little off-road action, but a lot.

Later this month, Prudhomme will compete in the NORRA Mexican 1000, a 1,000-mile race contested over five days. It will be his third consecutive outing in the marathon test; last year’s event was scratched due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prudhomme’s first attempt at such a race came in 1968, when he was chosen to drive a car owned by actor Steve McQueen when the latter’s movie-making schedule had to take priority. The engine burned up before the car ever got to the course.

DRIVER GREG CARRILLO FINALLY WILL RETURN TO TRACK IN VEGAS

This has been a long time coming for Top Fuel driver Greg Carrillo.

After not racing since July 21, 2019, mainly because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carrillo will finally return to the track at NHRA’s Denso Spark Plugs Four-Wide Nationals at the Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, April 16-18.

“I didn’t want to go through all this work and get people going like we did last year (2020) for Denver and you get everybody ready to go and you get sponsorship and you put all that work and effort into it and then the next thing you know, there’s no race,” Carrillo said. “I don’t want to put all this work into it and have nothing.
