PROCK LAYS DOWN SERIOUS WORDS WITHOUT OPENING HIS MOUTH

To understand veteran nitro tuner Jimmy Prock, one must first understand actions speak louder than words. A man of few words, Prock elects to let his race car do the talking.

The performance of his Jack Beckman-driven, Infinite Hero Funny Car spoke volumes recording the quickest elapsed time in Funny Car history with a 3.92 and backing up the feat with a 3.95 on a 110-plus degree track.

Even the eloquently spoken Beckman was at a loss after three-second run No. 17, the most of any Funny Car driver in competition, after a winning run in the second round simply said, "I have no more superlatives."

Prock had no superlatives to begin with, just results.

"I would say we got all of it," Prock said of Saturday's 3.95 record-clinching pass.

In baseball terms, Prock is a master in the art of the upper deck shot. He's clearly no base-hitter.

Prock knew with the conditions facing him, 68 degrees air temperature, relative humidity at 68 percent, barometer at 29.92 inches, the adjusted altitude at 1,257 feet and a track temperature of 84 degrees, if there was a time to swing like he's never swung before - this was the time.

Prock knew he had a chance of eclipsing John Force's 17-month old 3.965 world record, ironically a run when he was tuning the 16-time champion. However, the 3.92 was well beyond what he could have figured.

"It ran better than we thought," Prock admitted. "It was trying to run and that’s where we got the extra ET from. We had to slow it down the rest of the way so it lapped harder than we thought it would.  Honestly and that’s where it came from."

Prock knew the car was going to make it to the finish line, but even he had to stand in awe of a 60-foot time (.858) which could have been a decent Top Fuel run.

"We’ve been working on trying to get it to do this stuff and it’s finally getting there," Prock said.

Prock isn't sure if they can beat the run elsewhere, and this weekend showed the world with the right conditions just how good the track located north of San Francisco, Ca., can be.

"This place is fast," Prock pointed out.

Prock understands how much it means to a driver to qualify No. 1 and said he knows just how Beckman felt after winning the quarter-finals on Sunday, he had some feelings of his own.

Everyone works hard at this, it’s a tough business, and it’s gratifying to see something that you work on pay tough dividends and when you get the performance you are looking for," said Prock.

Did Prock feel he had something to prove? Not in the least.

"I race the same all the time," Prock said. "I don’t look at it like that.  I just do what I do, and I try to do the best that I can."
