Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park near Phoenix has tapped three motorsports professionals with a combined 100 years of racing and track experience as it prepares for its 38th season.

NASCAR marketing veteran Jon Sands, formerly of Roush Fenway Racing, recently was elevated from consultant to general manager and has added drag racing publicist Jeff Wolf, a professional journalist for more than three decades, to his staff as the business development/communications manager.

Another new member of the team is Ron Conner, who is the new Wild Horse track operations manager and race director. Conner was a member of the NHRA Safety Safari team for 26 years before becoming race director at Heartland Park Topeka motorsports facility in Kansas, and opening the Onawa Racing and Events Complex earlier this year in Iowa.

They are committed to elevating one of the busiest motorsports facilities in the country to the lofty stature it once enjoyed.

“This facility has a 35-year history of being a preeminent sports facility in Arizona,” said Sands, who grew up in Phoenix and was a part-time race crew member at the old Beeline Dragway near Phoenix as a teenager.

Sands, who has consulted for the track since 2015, worked with Wolf at the facility from 1989 to 1993 when it was Firebird International Raceway. Sands left to hold executive positions in NASCAR with Team Sabco and the Cohn & Wolfe agency before joining Roush Fenway and Roush Yates Engines organizations.

“Getting to work with Jeff adds a great deal of comfort as we move forward to achieve our goals,” he said.

Wolf recently moved to Chandler, Ariz., from his home outside of Indianapolis where he worked for six years as the media relations manager for Don Schumacher Racing in the Mello Yello series. 

“I couldn’t ignore the opportunity to work again with Jon and help him return the most unique racing facility in the country to the prominence it enjoyed in the 1980s and ’90s,” Wolf said.

Another recent addition to the management team is Luis Lopez as the facility operations manager. After serving six years in the U.S. Navy, Lopez graduated from West Los Angeles College with a degree in electrical engineering. He joined the Motorsports Park in July after retiring from Macy’s as a four-state regional operations engineering manager.

More announcements will be coming soon from the multi-purpose facility on the Gila River Indian Community that will enhance the fan and racer experience to further make The Motorsports Park at Wild Horse Pass the ultimate tourist destination in American motorsports.
