MASSEY MAKES HISTORIC RUN TO CLAIM NO. 1 TF SPOT

Spencer Massey left no doubt who the fastest Top Fuel dragster was Friday night at the SpringNationals in Houston.

The driver of the Don Schumacher Racing Red Fuel-sponsored entry set both ends of the Royal Purple Raceway track record with a 3.734-second run at 330.07 mph.

“It was an amazing run,” Massey said. “It gets tricky out here whenever it gets hot and sticky and the dew point is getting up there. It makes it hard for us drivers to really see. Backing up from the burnout I could hardly even see the groove. Right before I staged the car they had to lift the canopy up and actually wipe the inside of it off because it was fogging up so bad. I could hardly even see the race track. Obviously, I staged the car and stood on it and it was straight as an arrow. Whenever it is dark outside and you can see header flames that means it is going to be good runs. Todd (Okuhara, Massey’s crew chief) knows how to turns the knobs on it and it did exactly what it was supposed to do.”

Massey arrived at Houston fourth in the points, 27 points behind leader and his DSR teammate Antron Brown.

“That (run) was amazing,” Massey said. “I hope this sticks for (Saturday) because I have never been the No. 1 qualifier in my home state. I’m from Fort Worth, Texas and I have never won in Dallas and I have never won here in Houston and those things are huge on my bucket list. I’m one step closer with being No. 1 qualifier, but at the same time being No. 1 qualifier or No. 16 qualifier that doesn’t make a difference on race day. You have to be able to go down the race track and that’s what we are going to focus on (Saturday) and Sunday. I think we have been starting to turn it around the last few races and really since the beginning of the season, the car has been running really well. We made a good strong run (in the first session) and we were able to swing for the fences (Friday night) and it stuck.”
