MASSEY BLISTERS TO TOP FUEL QUALIFYING LEAD

Spencer Massey wasn't messing around.

With virtually perfect weather conditions and having made a bold prediction earlier in the week, Massey knew he had to put on a show during Friday evening qualifying at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals.

And what a show it was.

Massey bolted to the top of the Top Fuel qualifying sheet after shattering the track elapsed time record, clocking a 3.741 at 323.74 miles per hour. The previous record was set by Shawn Langdon in July of 2014 when he ran a 3.745 pass.

The track was a cool 87 degrees, the humidity was down and the winD was calm…perfect conditions for the fuel classes.

Matt Hagan ran the first sub-4 second pass in Funny Car earlier.

"In Toledo a few days ago I told everyone the track conditions were going to be there, the air was going to be cool and the track record was going to be there for the taking,” Massey said. “I'm happy it was us that took it.

"We knew the conditions were out there and saw all the numbers getting better and better. (Crew chief) Todd Smith said it was going to be in the mid 3.70s and he was exactly right. Todd kept making adjustments. Cars would go faster and Todd would come back and tune it up a little more. They did it exactly right."

Massey knows his Friday number might not stand. Saturday’s weather is supposed to be just as good, if not better, than Friday’s. Either way he isn’t going to complain about his current situation.

“Not that we’ve been struggling but we’ve seemed to have been missing on Friday nights,” Massey said. “We’ve seemed to miss the big runs where everybody gets into the show and gets in strong. The conditions were awesome and we have another night session tomorrow.

“Most tracks we go to, if you run a .74 you think no one is going to beat that Saturday. It’s a different story here. Everyone will have another chance to get us, but for now I’m happy because we’re number one.”

Massey actually expects to do well at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals…the problems with his motor home and trailer told him so.

“For the past four years if I have a problem with my motor coach or the hauler I travel down the road in we seem to do well, we seem to get to the finals or win,” Massey said. “It’s been five times in the last four years that I’ve had a situation with the motor home and we’ve gone on to get to the finals or win the race.

“When I pulled in here my generator would not start, and when I pulled into the grass to park in my spot I got stuck. I dug a big rut at Bill Bader’s track and he was not happy about it.

“I parked in my spot and went to work on the generator and got it running. Well, maybe my guys should have worked on my generator because the head gasket blew about three hours later. I had no generator.”

The employees at Pegasus Trailer, who are set up across pit road from Massey, helped him with his generator problem so he can concentrate on the job at hand.
