Second-generation racer Mario Polito will make his Pro Stock debut at the 2020 Gulf Western Winternationals at Willowbank Raceway, September 17-20.

The son of Pro Stock legend Joe Polito will race a Jerry Bickel built 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt previously campaigned by NHRA star Rickie Smith. 

“I started racing in Super Sedan in 2008, and to make the jump to Pro Stock is a natural progression,” said Polito. “To race in the same category as dad will be something very special for my family. I have some big shoes to fill, following in his footsteps. I’m excited to have him in my corner as I start my journey into the world of Pro Stock.” 

Polito Sr is one of the most respected names in Australian Pro Stock circles after winning back-to- back ANDRA titles in 1996-1997 and will head up the teams in house engine development program.

“Now the coronavirus virus restrictions are being eased we are planning to go testing," added Polito. “I’ve only ever raced an auto shifter and moving into Pro Stock means adapting to a five-speed manual. We also need to get the crew up to speed regarding the preparation and maintenance needed to run the car. There’s a lot to be done before we go racing. I’m excited about the challenges and quietly confident we will be able to compete at the highest level from the moment we hit the track.”

Polito has assembled a strong roster of local sponsors headed by JD Concrete, Penetron Australia, and Hanson Construction Materials.
