At the 1989 NHRA Chief Nationals, the season the Texas Motorplex returned to the series, Ed, “The Ace” McCulloch, turned in a performance fitting of why the track was one of drag racing’s seven wonders of the straight-line world. McCulloch’s 5.137 elapsed time behind the wheel of the Miller Beer Oldsmobile obliterated his previous 5.18 record. THE BEEBE & MULLIGAN TOP FUELER
Here’s an awesome offering from our friends over at Red Line Shirt Club, offering the legendary Beebe & Mulligan Top Fuel dragster. Built at Woody Gilmore’s Race Car Engineering in late 1968 to replace their tired 1967-68 car, it put the already popular team of Tim “Chops” Beebe and John “The Zookeeper” Mulligan on the drag racing map with their convincing win at the 1969 NHRA Winternationals. THE SHIRLEY MULDOWNEY HERITAGE SERIES
Drag racing boasts a diversity of participation that is the envy of every other motor racing discipline on the planet. But, how diverse would the sport be today had there never been a woman with the fiery determination of Shirley “Cha Cha” Muldowney? While Shirley Shahan, Judy Lilly and others had broken drag racing’s gender barrier long before Muldowney left the streets of Schenectady, N.Y., they earned their NHRA hardware in cars that could have been driven to and from church, school or the corner store. When Muldowney burst upon the scene in the early 1970s, though, she wasn’t interested in driving a Dodge or Ford or Chevrolet. She was hell-bent on mashing the pedal on a Top Fuel dragster, a purpose-built race car that even in 1973 was capable of zero to 240 mile per hour acceleration in less than six seconds.
