Brazilian Pro Modified driver Sidnei Frigo was conscious Friday evening following his violent, over-the-wall crash during qualifying at the NHRA Spring Nationals at Royal Purple Raceway at Baytown, Texas.

Frigo was responsive to emergency medical personnel at the scene and was transported via helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in downtown Houston as a precaution.

Frigo, of Sao Paulo, was running in the left lane alongside Mike Castellana when his Artivinco Corvette got out of the groove, touched the center line and knocked out the timing cones. It lurched to the left and hit the guard wall before sailing over the wall. The car rolled several times.

Emergency crews sped to the scene and had a bit of a challenge extracting Frigo from the car, as it came to rest upside down. Castellana had shut off his engine early and was not near Frigo on the track at the time of the high-speed accident.

That was the second Pro Modified accident of the day. In the first session, Precision Turbo Camaro driver Jonathan Gray hit the wall after the finish line. His left rear tire exploded and splintered a large section of the body.

Competition Plus will provide more information when it becomes available.
