ENDERS KEEPS PS NO. 1 QUALIFYING SPOT

When reigning NHRA Pro Stock world champion Erica Enders rolled her Elite Motorsports Camaro off the trailer Friday she was blistering fast.

Enders clocked a track record time of 6.515-second time and it held up Saturday to give her the No. 1 qualifying spot for Sunday’s Kansas Nationals.

“This is just an awesome weekend with my Elite Motorsports team,” Enders said. “It’s a brand-new race car and it is our second race in a row with it, and we are just trying to get a handle on it and my guys have done a great job.”

This was Enders third No. 1 spot this season and the 15th for her career. Actually, Enders-Stevens claimed her first career Pro Stock No. 1 qualifying position at Heartland Park Topeka in 2006.

“It was definitely a fun memory here, becoming the first female No. 1 qualifier here in Pro Stock,” Enders said.

Enders won consecutive races at Las Vegas and Houston before being eliminated in the semifinals by Greg Anderson in Atlanta May 17.

Enders had the top three qualifying runs of each session – session No. 2 (6.520) and session No. 3 (6.560) and didn’t get a chance to make it four in a row as the final session was cancelled because of weather.

“I’m always pretty confident in my guys,” Enders said. “They tend to give me a very consistent race car and that makes my job a little bit easier to where I just have to focus on driving and not wonder what the car is going to do, if we are going blow the tires off or it is going to hook right or left. Being low for every session is pretty exciting. We were able to do that a lot together last year and accumulate those three bonus points per round that you are low.

"Coming into the final race last year, every point mattered, so we will take them if we can get them. I would have liked it (to get to run in the fourth qualifying session), but it was a good call with the rain coming in and the dew points going to meet the temperature and at that point it becomes dangerous for us because we don’t have a lot of downforce. I think we have a good handle on the car and hopefully a good race day setup.”
