DRAG RACING IN AUSTRALIA SUSPENDED

Australia’s two premier drag venues, Willowbank Raceway and Sydney Dragway, have shut down until further notice in response to the Federal Government restrictions on public gatherings to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Willowbank released a statement saying, “they were working towards the best outcome for all including sponsors, racers and fans and examining all options regarding what may happen through 2020.”

The track had earlier announced the cancellation of the Santo Super Thunder race, April 10.

The next major events on the Australian Pro Series calendar are the Nitro Thunder race, May 2 at Sydney Dragway, followed by the Willowbank Winternationals scheduled for June 3-6.

ANDRA has announced that the Grand Final round of the Summit Racing Equipment Sportsman Series at Adelaide International Raceway March 28-29 had been postponed until October 2020.

“The option of continuing the event on the scheduled dates on a ‘no spectator’ basis has been considered,” according to ANDRA CEO Brett Stevens. “However, there are two reasons this is not possible. Firstly, with the number of competitors already entered, even without spectators this event would easily exceed the 500-person on-site limit when crew members, track staff and volunteers, officials, event contractors and suppliers and other required personnel are taken into account. Secondly, given the rapidly changing situation and the likely implementation of further restrictions to come we have decided this is not an appropriate course of action at this time.”
