DANIELS MAKES IT THREE DODGE HEMI TITLES IN A ROW

Jimmy Daniels etched his name into Dodge Mopar Hemi Shootout history Friday evening at the Chevrolet Performance NHRA U.S. Nationals .

Daniels, 22, of Yardley, Pa., won an unprecedented third consecutive title, the first all-1968 Dodge Dart by beating his 72-year-old Ray Barton Racing Engines teammate and No. 1 qualifier Gary Wolkwitz.

Daniels ran an 8.662, 156.15 for the win, easily surpassing Wolkwitz's 10.11.

"Winning it three times is just like winning it for the first time," Daniels said. "The feeling is amazing; it's unbelievable. There's just so many people who go into making this thing successful.

"My father, my father, my girlfriend, her parents. My grandfather is here. My teammate Gary Wolkwitz. David Barton and the list goes on."

Daniels entered eliminations as the No. 2 qualifier and stopped Mark Howes in the first round, carding low elapsed time in the process with an 8.522. He maintained his torrid 8.5-second pace with an 8.57 during a second-round bye.

Daniels saved his best for the semis, cranking out an 8.511 elapsed time to eliminate Russell Campbell.
