CLAY MILLICAN RETURNS TO WHERE IT ALL BEGAN, WITH THE CHICAGO WHITE SOX

Clay Millican plans to go back to where it all began.

For the first time since his Top Fuel debut in 1999, Millican and the Chicago White Sox will partner for the NHRA Route 66 Nationals outside of Chicago, Ill.

“Starting my Top Fuel career in the White Sox-sponsored car at Route 66 Raceway was incredible,” says Millican. “Then winning the event in 2018 on the 20th anniversary of my start and of the opening of Route 66 Raceway was unbelievable. Now we are coming full circle with having the White Sox back with us on the Parts Plus dragster. It’s going to be a special weekend.”

Millican remains positive that the second go-round will be much better than the first. For Millican, he’s reminded from time to time of the reverse burnout which nearly got him in a lot of trouble on his first qualifying attempt.

The rookie mistake quickly drew the ire of legendary NHRA starter Buster Couch.

“He’s like, ‘I don’t know what you did before you got your Top Fuel license, but you might think about going back to it.”

“He did not like me doing a reverse burnout.”

Chicago is Memory Central for Millican.

“This place is special, I mean it just is,” Millican said. “When I first did this, my goal was just to drive one of these things. I never thought about winning, to be honest with you. I just wanted to see what it was like to drive one, and Peter Lehman gave me that opportunity. It was crazy, crazy, crazy for me to win at this track 20 years later like I did last year.”

Millican will also have the honors of throwing out the first pitch at the White Sox game against the Cleveland Indians Thursday, May 30. The Chicago White Sox-bannered Top Fuel Dragster will be on display at Guaranteed Rate Field (known as Comiskey Park).
