History was made last weekend at Maryland International Raceway in Mechanicsville.

For the first time since MDIR opened for racing in July of 1966, the raceway had its inaugural all-female starting line and waterbox officiating team during the International Drag Bike League (IDBL) Sport Nationals presented by M2 Shocks event.

The historic moment was achieved by Dahlgren, Va., sisters, Christel Andy and Traci Andy and Jessica Leonard of Mechanicsville.

The trio was in charge during the Friday night testing June 8 and Gambler’s Race session leading up to the event that was completed June 9.

Royce Miller, the IRG COO and acting GM at Maryland International Raceway, praised the crew for the milestone accomplishment.

“This is not just a token all-female starting line crew for publicity,” Miller said in a press release. “These ladies are good at their positions and get the job done.”

These three women are a small sample of the many great women who work at MDIR in key areas including track officials, rescue staff, tower staff, gate staff, office staff and concessions.

More information about MDIR is available at www.RaceMDIR.com.
