CAPPS UNINJURED IN BAKERSFIELD MISHAP

capps_wheelie.jpgRon Capps was trying to qualify at the Goodguys 8th annual Fuel and Gas Finals and instead placed first in the wheelstand contest. He also grazed both Bakersfield retaining walls. The end result was an uninjured Capps, a wounded race car and one for the highlight reel.

At the hit, Capps experienced exceptional traction in Jeff Gaynor’s classic Mopar flopper and put the car on the bumper. The car landed hard (with apparent steering damage) and scraped the left wall before slowing and eventually crossing over to make contact with the right. (Photo captured from video)

“We were going to step on it and go after a five second run,” Capps said. “The track was tremendous and the Goodguys had the track prepared very well. I got on the throttle and it kind of sailed up there. It came down and broke the a-arms and glanced off of the wall. I am fine.

“Brut, Don Schumacher and all of those guys let me come do this and run circles in the dirt. I love running the Goodguys. I grew up doing this and it makes my life to be able to do this. Hopefully Jeff Gaynor will be able to fix the car and we can do this again next year.

“The fans got their money’s worth today.”(Photo captured from video)
