TRICK OR TREAT WITH GEORGE HOWARD

Montgomery Halloween race promises a cool 100 grand to winner

One lucky racer will walk away with $100,000 if he or she wins the big race at Montgomery Motorsports Park’s first annual Halloween Classic, to be held over the October 27 through 29 weekend at the central Alabama drag strip. The winning purse, to be paid out on Saturday, is said to be the largest to be given to a single drag race winner in the Classic’s special racing category, reserved for street- and modified, full-bodied-type cars.

“I have never heard of a higher purse paid out for a race like this,” says race promoter George Howard of Birmingham. “No matter how many cars we have, we are having a race.” Entry fee for the Halloween Classic, which is reserved for cars that race without sophisticated racing electronics --- normally referred to as “Footbrake” race cars --- is $1,000 for the three-day, eighth-mile event. Racers on Friday and Sunday will be racing for $5,000-to-win on both days, with graduated purses paid down to eight and 16 cars. The $100,000-to-win race will take place on Saturday, October 28, beginning at 1 p.m. Other special races are planned for the entire weekend.

General admission for the three-day weekend is $35, with kids 12 and under admitted free. Gates will open at 8 a.m. each day. The Montgomery Halloween Classic is sponsored by TCI Automotive and Comp Cams of Memphis, Tennessee.
