BUFF LEARNS THE MILLER WAY

Troy Buff is learning what each driver who preceded him in driving for veteran team owner and piston manufacturer Bill Miller found out. He’s learned that Miller is tough, but fair. The former Top Alcohol Dragster standout quickly points out the most crucial lesson he learned is that Miller is an excellent teacher.

“I'm learning a lot,” Buff said. “It's a bonus because he's showing you not only the things that you're doing wrong but the things that you're doing right.  He'll stay on you but he'll show you what you did good.  I'm learning a lot from the man.”

Buff joined Miller’s BME-sponsored team in late 2007 as Alan Bradshaw resigned his position to accept a full-time tour driving for Dexter Tuttle. Prior to the assignment, Buff had limited seat time behind the wheel of the Tim and Renee Coglan Top Fuel dragster.

One of the things right now is that he's trying to break some habits that I've had over all the years of driving.  Like going too fast through the water bar and he wants us to go slower so I'm learning things his way.  It was tough at Pomona because that was with no testing.  It's all working out.  It's working out good. - Troy Buff

Does being a rookie help Buff with his current situation as driver for Miller?

“That's a good question,” responded Buff. “One of the things right now is that he's trying to break some habits that I've had over all the years of driving.  Like going too fast through the water bar and he wants us to go slower so I'm learning things his way.  It was tough at Pomona because that was with no testing.  It's all working out.  It's working out good.”

Miller’s tutelage has paid dividends this season. After two events, Buff has qualified for both.

Buff has yet to win a round, but he’s clearly making progress. Is he getting more "attaboys" than more slaps on the back of the head?

“Right now it's pretty 50/50,” Buff said, smiling.
