Jim Dunn Racing also
announced that veteran Funny Car driver Tony Bartone will continue as the driver
of the CANIDAE Pet Foods Chevrolet in 2008 and Wiley X Eyewear and Speedway
Illustrated Magazine will come on board as major associate sponsors.
Jim
Dunn is one of the original pioneers of NHRA Drag Racing. He began his career as
a competitor in 1950 when the popularity of the sport was starting to take hold
on local strips throughout Southern California. Over the years, the acclaimed
driver/crew chief/team owner has accumulated numerous wins and performance
records including a victory at the 1972 Supernationals in Ontario, Calif., the
1981 World Finals in Irvine, Calif., and he was runner-up at the 1981 U.S.
Nationals in Indianapolis.
Since retiring from driving in 1990, Dunn's
career has continued to flourish as a respected crew chief, technical advisor
and car owner. He wrenched cars to numerous victories throughout the '90s
including the 1997 Big Bud Shootout in Indianapolis, the 1998 Pontiac Excitement
Nationals in Columbus, Ohio, and the 1999 U.S. Nationals at Indianapolis. More
recently in 2005 (with Bartone behind the wheel), the Jim Dunn Racing
nitro-powered Chevrolet advanced to the finals at the Summit Racing Nationals in
Las Vegas and earned a No. 1 qualifying award at Englishtown
(N.J.).
"We're proud to introduce CANIDAE All Natural Pet Foods to NHRA
POWERade Drag Racing and its loyal base of fans," said long-time racing veteran
and team owner Jim Dunn. "The support of CANIDAE Pet Foods and all of our other
great sponsors will allow us to race in what is becoming an increasingly
competitive Funny Car class."
"We've put a lot of good things in place
during the offseason," said Jon Dunn, team manager Jim Dunn Racing. "We've
brought in some tremendous sponsors and team partners and we can't wait to get
started. We're also pleased to have Tony back with us this year. Tony's done a
great job for us, knows what we're trying to accomplish and the tight parameters
we're racing with. To have Tony back sets us up for what we're hoping will be a
great year."
It will be Bartone's fourth full season with Jim Dunn
Racing. Last year, the 51-year-old New York native and 1996 Lucas Oil Alcohol
Funny Car champion advanced to a pair of semifinals at Englishtown and Richmond
(Va.) and qualified a season-best No. 4 at Seattle. Bartone is a five-time NHRA
Southeast Division Alcohol Funny Car champion (1992-94, 1996, 1999).
"To
be back with Jim Dunn Racing with CANIDAE Pet Foods and all of our great
sponsors is something I'm looking forward to," said Bartone. "The Dunns and I
have a special relationship, we know each other very well and we both know what
to expect of each other."
In addition to the aforementioned sponsors,
Lucas Oil, Moon, Superwinch and Roger Dean Chevrolet will return as continuing
sponsors on the Jim Dunn Racing Funny Car.
