Legendary American motorsports journalist Chris Economaki was honored
today with a Lifetime NHRA Media Award prior to the first round of
qualifying at the ProCare RX NHRA SuperNationals presented by R2B2
Motors at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
Legendary American motorsports journalist Chris Economaki was honored today with a Lifetime NHRA Media Award prior to the first round of qualifying at the ProCare RX NHRA SuperNationals presented by R2B2 Motors at historic Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J.
Economaki, 86, was presented the award by Jerry Archambeault, NHRA vice president of public relations and communications, in a brief ceremony at the starting line. Economaki was honored in recognition of his many decades of providing superior coverage of motorsports with passion, dedication and excellence.
Known best as publisher of National Speed Sport News, Economaki has covered just about every type of automobile racing for various forms of media. He has worked as a pit reporter for ABC’s Wide World of Sports and CBS Sports and as a contributor to ESPN Speedweek and TBS’ Motorweek Illustrated. He also worked as an analyst for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Radio Network.
Economaki has covered many of the world’s greatest motorsports events, including the prestigious U.S. Nationals, Indy 500, Daytona 500, 24 Hours of Le Mans, and many Formula One Grand Prix races.
After working as a delivery boy for National Speed Sport News at the age of 13, Economaki, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., eventually became the editor of the newsweekly in 1950 and purchased the publication shortly thereafter. He has co-written an autobiography called “Let ‘Em All Go: The Story of Auto Racing by the Man who was there.” He has appeared as a pit reporter in two movies, “Stroker Ace” and “Six Pack.” His highly informative weekly column remains one of National Speed Sport News’ must-reads.
