HAMMONDS ON ESPN FIRST TAKE

2084.jpgNHRA Pro Stock Car driver Tom Hammonds will make his rounds as a guest on ESPN First Take and ESPNNews The Hotlist, Tuesday, June 19.  Check local listing for airing times.

Retired from the NBA after 12 years in the league, Hammonds has moved on to compete as a National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Pro Stock Car driver.  Racing since the age of 16, Hammonds has won 15 Muscle Car Association events and reached the final round of three NHRA events.     

 

Sitting out of competition for three years, Hammonds made a triumphant return to full-time drag racing at the Gatornationals Gainesville Raceway in March 2007. He qualified his Chevy Cobalt 15th for elimination rounds, but lost in the first round. Since then, he has raced in a total of seven races, making it to elimination Sunday six times.  In the last two races, he made it to the quarter finals. Hammonds currently sits in 17th place with 239 points out of 33 slots.

 

Hammonds, the only African American owner and driver of a race team in professional motorsports, was drafted 9th overall in the 1989 NBA draft, Hammonds enjoyed his career with the Washington, Denver, Charlotte, and Minnesota, where he completed his career.  Before his illustrious NBA career, he played college basketball at Georgia Tech, where his jersey was retired for being the fourth all time leading scorer. 

 

The Crestview, Fla. native was inducted into the All Sports Association Hall of Fame of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. in March 2007.
