Erica Enders-Stevens became the first woman to win an NHRA Pro Stock world championship title Sunday when she defeated her closest points rival Jason Line in the final round of the Auto Club NHRA Finals.

DSB 7245In other racing, Matt Hagan claimed the Funny Car world championship in dramatic fashion over John Force and also won the season-ending race, while Andrew Hines took the Pro Stock Motorcycle championship by racing to a first-round victory. Morgan Lucas earned the Top Fuel race victory and Hector Arana Jr. captured the Pro Stock Motorcycle win.

Enders-Stevens raced to her sixth victory of the season when Line fouled at the start in the winner-take-all final-round meeting at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. She is the third female to win a world championship in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series, joining three-time Top Fuel champion Shirley Muldowney and three-time Pro Stock Motorcycle champ Angelle Sampey.

Enders-Stevens led a major charge this season by female racers in NHRA that resulted in 14 victories by four drivers. She was joined in the winner’s circle during the year by Courtney Force and Alexis DeJoria in Funny Car and Angie Smith in Pro Stock Motorcycle. Brittany Force raced to four runner-up finishes and three No.1 qualifying positions in Top Fuel.

“It’s awesome to be a part of this female movement in NHRA,” Enders-Stevens said. “I think it goes to show what we're capable of and what a great platform NHRA gives all of us girls to climb the ladder and to get to where we want to go.

“To join two of my heroes, Shirley Muldowney and Angelle Sampey, who are both my friends now, as NHRA world champions, is simply unreal. The words of advice I’ve received from those two women means so much to me.”

Enders-Stevens, whose early life as an NHRA Jr. Drag Racing League competitor was the subject of a popular Disney Channel original movie in 2003, began pursuing this goal in 2005 when she made her Pro Stock debut. After advancing to six final rounds in her first eight seasons she broke through with her first victory in 2012 at Chicago. She challenged for the championship the last three seasons, finishing a career-best fourth in 2012.
DSB 7266
This season she led the points standings for most of the season and overcame a slow start in the Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship by rallying in the last four playoff races to post a pair of semifinal finishes in St. Louis and Reading and closed her championship run with back-to-back victories in Las Vegas and Pomona. She also posted six No. 1 qualifying positions, including four during the Countdown, at the controls of her Elite Motorsports Chevy Camaro.

“I was a little kid with a big dream,” Enders-Stevens said. “I started racing junior dragsters and then moved into sportsman racing and moved on up the ranks to the pro level and now 10 years later here I am in Pro Stock. It’s an awesome feeling and I feel so blessed.”

In Funny Car, Hagan claimed his second world championship title when he won his semifinal round over Tommy Johnson Jr. He then put an exclamation point on his title by racing to his fourth victory of the season and 14th of his career by defeating second place finisher John Force in the final round.

Hagan powered to a final round performance of 4.076 seconds at 310.77 mph in his Mopar Express Lane Dodge Charger to hold off Force’s Castrol GTX Ford Mustang, which finished in 4.086 at 276.58.

“I think that the championship was really what we were after, and the race win was kind of icing on the cake,” Hagan said. “But it just solidifies that we had a great race car. To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best, and everybody says he’s the best, so we beat him, and that’s what's cool about this deal. It was nice to finish it out here strong. We beat him here last year at this time, and we did it again this year. Hat’s off to him. They’ve got a great car, but we had a little better one today.”
DSB 7250
Hagan, who earned his first world championship in 2011, scored four victories this season, including three in the Countdown playoffs to wrap up the championship after finishing the regular season in eighth place. Hagan, who moonlights as a cattle rancher in his southwest Virginia home, has finished first or second in the points in four of the last five seasons.

“There’s a lot of guys who have been out here their entire careers and haven’t won one of these so you never take any of it for granted,” Hagan said. “We gave these fans what they were waiting for and paid for, and hopefully, we can go out and win another one, but it’s just great to be in this experience and be a part of this.”

Lucas took his second Top Fuel victory of the season and 11th of his career by posting two of the top three-quickest runs in category history to hold off newly-crowned Top Fuel world champion Tony Schumacher in the final round. Schumacher earned a record eighth Top Fuel world championship at the end of qualifying on Saturday.

Lucas, who ran a part-time schedule this season, raced to round wins over Billy Torrence, Shawn Langdon and Antron Brown in early rounds before defeating Schumacher in the final. He posted a 3.707 to win the semi match with Brown and then saved his best for last, posting a track record 3.704 to take the final-round win over Schumacher.

“I feel like I’m doing a better job behind the wheel on a part-time basis than I ever did racing full-time,” Lucas said. "The car was fast, and it was on a string. I almost didn’t have to steer it or do anything. It felt like I was strapped to a missile. I had a lot of fun today."

DSB 7227Hines captured his fourth Pro Stock Motorcycle world championship and first since 2006 when he claimed the first-round win over Katie Sullivan. Hines raced to six victories during the season to earn his first championship in the Countdown era aboard his Screamin’ Eagle Vance and Hines Harley-Davidson.

“I’ve been waiting a long time to be able to write ‘4x’ next to my name,” Hines said. “It was nice to finally get it done, but also to get it done with a win. I didn’t really want to have to be the guy who waited for someone else to lose to clinch it. It’s great to get that big trophy and that big check, but the biggest trophies I have are my wife, Tanya, and my kids, Declan and Rion."

Arana Jr. went on to claim the race victory on his Lucas Oil Buell, taking his second win of the season and ninth of his career by outrunning Hines’ teammate Eddie Krawiec in the final round.

“I popped the clutch and never saw Eddie,” Arana Jr. said. “My bike went straight down the track and it was an amazing feeling. This is going to be a good off-season. I'm glad we got the win for the team. This is a good confidence booster. It's good for our morale for the next four months."

The 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season begins Feb. 5-8 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona (Calif.).

SATURDAY - SCHUMACHER RACES TO EIGHTH NHRA TOP FUEL TITLE

tf champ

Tony Schumacher earned a record eighth Top Fuel world championship title Saturday at the 50th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

tfRichie Crampton (Top Fuel), Alexis DeJoria (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the final NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship event of the season.

Schumacher claimed his first season crown since 2009 following qualifying when closest challenger Spencer Massey failed to improve on his sixth place qualifying position. Schumacher qualified ninth and will face Larry Dixon in the opening round of eliminations as he goes for his sixth win of the season and fourth in the Countdown playoffs.

fc2Schumacher earned the championship over second place Massey by building a 104-point lead with only a maximum of 100 points available to a single driver on Sunday. Schumacher entered the Countdown playoffs as the fourth seed, but won the first two Countdown races and then pulled away from his rivals with another playoff victory at the controls of his famed U.S. Army dragster at Maple Grove Raceway near Reading, Pa. on Oct. 5. He missed finalizing the championship two weeks ago in Las Vegas and entered this race needing to earn a few more points to close the deal. By the end of qualifying on Saturday, he had the necessary points.

“It is much more difficult now than it ever has been,” said Schumacher, who won seven titles between 1999-2009, including six in a row from 2004-2009, to become the most successful Top Fuel driver in NHRA history. “The key to winning these (championships) is to come on at the right time. This is a great sport but there is some luck involved. You gotta fight the battle and like (John) Force says, you gotta be part of the battle to win it.”

Rookie Top Fuel driver Crampton claimed his first No. 1 qualifying position with a track record time of 3.711 seconds at 316.30 mph in his GEICO/Lucas Oil dragster. The Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals winner and Auto Club Road to the Future award candidate will race Troy Buff in the opening round.

The longtime crew member and Australian transplant feels fortunate to be in a position to win his third race of the season and finally get a top qualifying position for his resume after being close several times this season.

“I came here as a spectator to this race in 1999 and sat in the grandstands with my family,” Crampton said. “I was just in awe of the sport, lining up to get autographs from the drivers. To be in this position now is just a dream come true. I am probably the most psspoiled rookie in the history of NHRA because I race with a team that gives me such great equipment. Just like Indy, this is a huge race where we wanted to do well. It’s looking good so far and hopefully it will translate into some round wins tomorrow.”

In Funny Car, DeJoria powered to her third No. 1 of the season with a 3.998 at 311.41 in her Patron Café XO Incendio Toyota Camry. DeJoria, a three-time winner this season, will meet veteran driver Gary Densham in the first round.

“It’s one of the fastest tracks on the circuit and to be No. 1 right now is great for our whole team, and they’re hungry,” DeJoria said. “I’m so excited and it’s with a three-second run. It was an incredible session. It’s great to be a part of it.”

Meanwhile, only 23 points separate Funny Car championship contenders Matt Hagan and John Force. Hagan will race Chad Head in the first round on one side of the bracket, while Force will meet Bob Tasca on the other side. Hagan needs to hold his ground to earn his second title, while Force needs to advance two rounds past Hagan to score his record 17th world championship.

Pro Stock championship challenger Line raced to his third No. 1 qualifying effort of the year and 38th of his career by posting a 6.517 at 212.19 in his Summit Racing Equipment Chevy Camaro. Line, who will meet Jeff Isbell in the first round, trails series leader Erica Enders-Stevens by 19 points heading into eliminations. Enders-Stevens, who is trying to become NHRA’s first female Pro Stock champ, qualified third and will race Larry Morgan in the opener.
psm
“The way the ladder worked out it should set up for a phenomenal day tomorrow if she and I race in the final,” Line said. “Whoever wins that would win the championship. This is a cool place. This is where champions are crowned. I’ve always said I like Pomona at the beginning of the year because you’re ready to get back to racing, and at the end of the year you’re done, you’re worn out. I have one more day before I’m worn out, though.”

Arana Jr. raced to his third No. 1 of the season and 16th of his career in Pro Stock Motorcycle, powering his Lucas Oil Buell to a leading effort of 6.832 at 197.62. He will open eliminations against Fred Camarena.

“My bike is running good,” Arana Jr. said. “I've got my bike back from the beginning of the year and that makes a big difference. It's easier to ride and it gives me confidence. We looked at the weather today and figured there would be some improvements, especially in Q3 when conditions were at their best. We put a good tune-up in the bike but I made a mistake as a rider and we didn't get down the track. I how forgot to let go of the clutch. We did learn some things that we could use for tomorrow, though.”

In the hunt for the championship in the two-wheel category, Eddie Krawiec trimmed Andrew Hines’ series lead to 89 points with his qualifying effort. The two Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson riders will battle for the championship tomorrow, although a first round win by Hines will secure his fourth world championship title.

FRIDAY QUALIFYING - KALITTA, JOHNSON JR., S. GRAY AND ARANA JR. LEAD QUALIFYING AT POMONA

kalitta2

Doug Kalitta raced to the qualifying lead in Top Fuel Friday at the 50th annual Auto Club NHRA Finals at historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona.

johnson jrTommy Johnson Jr. (Funny Car), Shane Gray (Pro Stock) and Hector Arana Jr. (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their classes at the final race of the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship.

Kalitta, who has had one of the quickest cars on the circuit this year is in position to claim his seventh No. 1 qualifying position of the season if his performance holds through Saturday’s final two qualifying sessions (11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.).

“That was a nice run for us tonight,” Kalitta said. “The temperatures are great here this weekend. There should be some good qualifying runs the rest of the weekend and it should be exciting for the fans. I love running at this place because it has so much history. We’ll try to qualify up front and let it all hang out on Sunday and see how it goes.”

Kalitta, who led the series standings for most of the regular season and entered the Countdown as the second seed, has been officially eliminated from title contention since series points leader Tony Schumacher is already qualified near the top of the 16-car field. Kalitta took the top spot with a performance of 3.754 seconds at 326.87 mph in his Mac Tools dragster.

“The pressure is off, we’re just here to win this thing on Sunday,” Kalitta said. “It’s one of the best years we’ve had and we’ll keep at it. I’m real proud of my guys.”

Johnson Jr. powered his Make-A-Wish Dodge Charger to a 4.003 at 317.34 to take the qualifying lead in Funny Car.

gray“We were shooting for the threes,” Johnson Jr. said. “We were hoping the conditions would’ve been a little better. We had a tune up in there to run (a three-second time). We got close. I am having a good time, enjoying myself. The car’s running great. We have a very steady car that’s getting better and better. All season long we’ve got better. The team is starting to jell and the team chemistry is coming together.”

Meanwhile, John Force trimmed Matt Hagan’s points lead by two by posting the second-quickest time in the first qualifying session. Force qualified fourth in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang at 4.015 at 316.60, and Hagan sits eighth in his Mopar Express Lane Charger with a 4.063 at 314.83. Following the first two sessions, Hagan now leads Force by 19.

Ron Capps raced to the No. 2 spot in his NAPA Auto Parts Charger with a 4.005 at 317.79 and two-time world champ Cruz Pedregon is anchoring the third spot in his Snap-on Tools Toyota with a 4.011 at 311.77.

Gray paced the Pro Stock field with a performance of 6.522 seconds at 211.26 mph in his Gray Manufacturing Chevy Camaro. Gray is one of the drivers still in contention for the championship in the 200 mph factory hot rod category, but he trails series leader Erica Enders-Stevens by a large margin. She qualified second with a 6.526 at 211.99 in her Elite Motorsports Camaro as she attempts to become the first female driver to win an NHRA Pro Stock world championship.

“I’d like to win kind of like we did it here in 2010,” Gray said. “We’re here to have fun. If you stress yourself out to where it’s not fun anymore then you need to rethink the game. I want to be out here and race for multiple years. I thought I would change my attitude and outlook and start having fun. When you do that, things start happening a lot easier for you.”

arana jrSecond-place Jason Line qualified third at the controls of his Summit Racing Equipment Camaro with a 6.532 at 211.46. Line, who entered the race 17 back of Enders-Stevens, now trails by 19 points following today’s two sessions. Defending world champ Jeg Coughlin is fourth with a 6.538 at 211.13 in his JEGS.com Dodge Dart.

Arana Jr. led the two-wheel category with a 6.832 at 197.62 on his Lucas Oil Buell. If the time holds it will be his third of the season and 16th of his career.

“My goal was to solve our issues leaving the starting line,” said Arana Jr. “Because we’ve done that we were more consistent and we’ve been able to jump back to the top of the field. It’s still not over since it is Friday. There are a lot of bikes out there that can catch us. I still want to get a win since this is the last race of the season and finish on a good note.”

Series points leader Andrew Hines qualified third on his Screamin’ Eagle Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson with a 6.859 at 195.99, while his closest competition for the championship, Eddie Krawiec, qualified second on his Harley-Davidson with a 6.834 at 195.76.

THURSDAY SPORTSMAN - DEMKE, LINDBERG HEADLINE FIRST DAY POMONA QUALIFYING

tad

compNot content with knowing he's going to be the NHRA Lucas Oil Champion, Chris Demke opened first day qualifying at the NHRA AAA Finals with the provisional No. 1 qualifying effort. Demke cranked out a 5.277 second pass at 269.67 miles per hour.

Just three years after being critically injured in a non-racing motorcycle accident, Shawn Cowie continues to make a remarkable comeback. Thursday afternoon the Delta, British Columbia-based driver piloted his Top Alcohol Dragster to the second quickest run.

Cowie drove his supercharged dragster to a 5.303 elapsed time at 273.05 miles per hour. Ashley Sanford anchored the 16-car field with 19 entries on the grounds.

Swedish Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Jonnie Lindberg thundered his way to the top of the field by beating out the twenty other entries with a 5.571, 261.07 to beat out Doug Gordon and Kris Hool.

Local Comp racer John Mihovetz put nearly three-tenths between him and No. 2 qualifier Clint Neff when he obliterated the AA/Turbocharged Automatic with a 5.920 elapsed time -0.900 under the 6.820 index.

Bo Butner paced the Super Stock division with his SS/BA Cobra Jet (8.767, -1.133) while Victor Cagnazzi was the man in Stock with a 9.206, -1.094 performance behind the wheel of his BB/Stock COPO Camaro.
