RAIN WASHES OUT ROCKINGHAM’S DRAGSTOCK XI PRO MOD RACE

Heavy rain washed out final eliminations Sunday in Dragstock XI at Rockingham Dragway, the seventh of eight races in the PDRA Pro Modified Series.  The event will be completed in conjunction with the PDRA season finale, Oct. 10-11, at Virginia Motorsports Park.

“Very disappointing,” Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood said of the outcome.  “We had a helluva a race going but, once again, you find yourself at the mercy of Mother Nature.  Our crew and the PDRA crew went above and beyond trying to get the track dry, but it seemed like every time we were within a couple minutes of  ‘go,’ the clouds opened up again.

“We had a great Saturday night show and I think everyone was looking forward to a great race on Sunday,” he said.  “It’s just one of those things you have to deal with if you’re in this business any time at all.”

Before the rain, Gene Hector of Big Spring, Texas, scored a major upset by beating No. 1 qualifier Jason Scruggs of Saltillo, Mississippi in the featured Pro Extreme category.  That puts point leader and No. 2 qualifier Bubba Stanton of Potts Camp, Mississippi in the driver’s seat when racing resumes in Richmond, Virginia.

First round racing was completed in every category except Pro Stock when rain forced the first of several suspensions of competition before officials finally pulled the plug on the event at 3 p.m.

SATURDAY RESULTS - QUALIFYING IS COMPLETED DURING DAY TWO

After two rounds of qualifying Saturday, Sept. 6, for the Professional Drag Racers Association (PDRA) Dragstock at North Carolina's Rockingham Dragway, only one of five pro classes saw a change at the head of the qualifying lists from Friday-night's lone qualifying session, as motorcycle drag racing legend Billy Vose displaced Ashley Owens from the number-one position in Pro Extreme Motorcycle.

Retaining their qualifying leads heading into the first round of eliminations for all classes Saturday night were Jason Scruggs in Pro Extreme, Tommy Franklin in Pro Nitrous, Steven Whitely in Pro Boost and Dean Goforth in Extreme Pro Stock.

Meanwhile, two of three PDRA sportsman classes saw their qualifying leads change hands as Boyd Beyer took over from Bruce Thrift in Top Sportsman, Jody Stroud got bumped down to second in Top Dragster by Richard Edwards and Ziff Hudson held onto his lead in the PDRA's new "small-tire" Pro 275/28 class.

FRIDAY RESULTS - SCRUGGS FIRST DAY QUALIFYING LEADER AT PDRA’S DRAGSTOCK XI

Veteran Jason Scruggs of Saltillo, Miss., drove his 1963 Corvette through the eighth mile timers in 3.570 seconds at 215.13 miles per hour Friday and took the provisional No. 1 position in advance of Sunday’s Dragstock XI PDRA Pro Modified race at Steve Earwood’s Rockingham Dragway.

It was a late night  for Scruggs who, along with everyone else, had to wait for a track clean-up following an engine explosion and fire involving the 1969 Chevy Camaro replica of David Campbell of Oxford, Miss.  

Campbell was uninjured in the incident in which a valve hung open precipitating a nitrous explosion that blew the hood scoop 30 feet in the air.  Unfortunately, that was only the beginning of Campbell’s troubles.  

What started as a small fire erupted into an inferno about 300 feet down the eighth mile course.  It took track personnel almost an hour to complete the cleanup and track repair operation.  

Qualifying resumes Saturday with two final sessions in each of eight primary PDRA classes.
