CRAMPTON LEADS ROOKIE OF THE YEAR CONSIDERATION

cramptonThere’s no doubt Richie Crampton has run the gamut of emotional successes this season. He’s hoping at the end of an emotional rookie season he’ll earn the award amongst his fellow novice peers.

A win at the NHRA Summernationals; the only victory for any rookie driver in this year’s NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series has vaulted him to the forefront of consideration for the AAA Road to the Future Award voted on by members of the media.

Crampton in 14 races currently holds a place in the top ten point earners with two semifinal finishes and four quarterfinal finishes and ranks ninth following Sonoma. His closest competition is Pro Stock driver Jonathan Gray, who ranks tenth in Pro Stock standings. Gray has two runner-up finishes thus far with three quarterfinal finishes.

“I am fortunate that I have a great team and great equipment to drive so I think I have all the tools I need to win that award,” Crampton explained. “Anything can happen and we will make a solid attempt in the Countdown. If we can win this thing, I will buy a lottery ticket.”

Crampton admits he might buy another ticket, a plane ticket to race Top Fuel down in his native homeland of Australia. He’s worked on dragsters Down Under but never driven one there.

Crampton has an invitation to race one but has declined to reveal who extended the invitation. The event conflicts with an NHRA National event, making this event unlikely. However, Crampton and team owner Morgan Lucas would like to race in Australia some time.

“Fingers are crossed that we will be able to find the resources to make it work,” Crampton admitted.

Regardless of which continent he races, lining up against the veterans has the same effect.

“It is still a little intimidating to line up against the best Top Fuel drivers in the world,” Crampton admits. “I tend to overthink when it comes to going up against some of the big names. But, I am getting more comfortable and gaining confidence.”

And these traits make him one of the hottest rookies on the tour now.
