BIONDO OFF TO A HOT START

1413-06790Six-time NHRA national champion Peter Biondo is determined to add another title (or two) to his incredible sportsman drag racing legacy, and if the first two months of the 2014 season are any indication he’s off to a great start.  Biondo finished the 2013 season on the west coast, where he drove to back-to-back Stock Eliminator final rounds at the last two stops on the 2013 NHRA tour, winning the Las Vegas Nationals and finishing as the runner-up at the NHRA Finals.  Biondo and longtime car owner Phil Monteith elected to leave the cars on the west coast over the short offseason, and pick back up with the 2014 NHRA tour in February.  The decision has proven to be a good one.

After average showings at the first two national events of the season, Biondo set the tone for weeks to come at the Division 7 LODRS opener in Phoenix, where he drove Monteith’s familiar Hatari Firebird to the Super Stock victory.  Two weeks later, he was back in the winner’s circle, this time with his Stock Eliminator Camaro at the LODRS event in Las Vegas.  As it turns out, Biondo was just getting warmed up.  The following weekend, he would drive both vehicles to victory at the Summit Racing Equipment Las Vegas Nationals.  The rare double victory was the second of Biondo’s illustrious career, marking his 47th and 48th NHRA national event victories.  The wins pushed him atop the national points standings in both Super Stock and Stock eliminator.

As if four Wally trophies in 3 weeks weren’t enough, Biondo still had work to do.  The weekend following the Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Biondo and partner Kyle Seipel hosted the K&N Spring Fling Vegas event at the same facility.

“People always ask me what I like better, being a racer or a race promoter,” Biondo laughed.  “It’s definitely more fun on the racer side of things.  Although promoting and managing the Spring Fling events is my passion, it is a ton of work to do it right.”

Biondo and Seipel’s work paid off, as the K&N Spring Fling Vegas played host to a huge crowd of 460 cars, great competition, and a lot of fun.  Biondo and Seipel are currently preparing for their second event of the season, the K&N Spring Fling 5-Day in Bristol, TN.

“It’s been an exciting spring,” said Biondo.  “Things have been really clicking on the race track.  Regardless of what sport you’re in, behind the scenes there’s always more going on than what it looks like on paper.  We have had our share of challenges, like the ever changing wind fluctuating from round to round at the Vegas national.  We were moving the dial as much as .15 from round to round based on wind changes alone!”

Derek Jeter UsEarlier this year, Biondo and his wife Emily got the opportunity to meet a lifelong hero of Peter’s, Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium.  Peter, who has always enjoyed relating other sports and experiences to racing, said that listening to Jeter’s view of “life on the big stage” was an honor and a privilege.  He draws some parallels between a ball player swinging a hot bat, and a racer driving with positive momentum.

“I was really feeling it at the Vegas National,” he explained.  “Relating to a baseball player who has a good day at the plate that says he sees the ball in slow motion, I felt like I was seeing every part of the race in slow motion.  I think part of it had to do with Kyle Seipel helping me.  Kyle basically told me what my car was running each round and was right just about every time.  When someone watches conditions for you, it allows you to focus more on executing on the track.”

In addition to the excitement on the race track, Peter and Emily recently found out that they will have a baby boy in August, their first child.  He expressed that they are both truly excited for this next chapter of life that they will get to enjoy together, and wished to thank his friends and family for their support and well wishes.

Peter thanked Biondo Racing Products, the Biondo family, and their employees.  BRP has expanded into selling items such as helmets and safety equipment, and they’ve enjoyed a busy first quarter.  Biondo Racing Products features great product lines including Digital Delay, Sparco, Simpson, Dynatech, and Kooks Headers.

“I also would like to thank Steve Williams and K&N, who support all forms of drag racing from sportsman to the pro’s.  K&N is the title rights sponsor of our K&N Spring Fling Events.  Also a big ‘thank you’ for companies like JEGS, ATI, and Goodyear for believing in me.”

With baby Biondo on the way, Peter and Emily have decided that the time is right to take a shot at adding a national championship trophy (or two) to the mantle.  Peter plans to make a run at the NHRA National Championship in Super Stock and Stock Eliminator this season.  If he succeeds, Biondo will add to his legacy as the winningest championship driver in NHRA sportsman drag racing history.
