The Sunraysia region has again shown its appetite for motorsport with a huge crowd on hand for the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car event held at Mildura’s recently resurfaced Sunset Strip.

Long-time series driver Shane Olive took the number one position on the podium driving Fast Company, beating out another experienced campaigner, Anthony Begley aboard L.A. Hooker.  The ever-consistent Daniel Schultz in the Supa Charger filled the third and final position on the rostrum.

The fastest car on the night was the Nitro Express ’57 Chev driven by Rick Gauci recording a 3.92 second pass at 296.08km/h on the very first pass of the night but a second round loss for Gauci put an end to his hopes of another event win.

The event was the tightest held so far with Schultz, Messineo, Moore, Walshe, Russell, Begley, Gauci and West all locked on four points after the first two rounds.

The final round of racing was cancelled after an accident involving Modified racer Leanne Braggs.

Series Manager Steve Bettes said, “It was an unfortunate end and we are very grateful that Leanne Braggs is recovering well after what was a serious top end crash at Mildura last night.”

“Everyone involved in the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car Series would like to pass on their best wishes in recovery to Leanne her family and friends.”

Olive was reserved in his celebrations but obviously relieved to get a win.

“It was a challenging night, the track wasn’t as tight as the night cooled off, which made it a real driving effort to get down the track.

“I was using the handbrake from the start and kept using it right down the track. There was no time to relax, it was all hands on deck! All of the guys did well to get the cars down the track,” explained the Sydney-based pilot.

The next event for the Aeroflow Outlaw Nitro Funny Car will be held at Benaraby Raceway located near Gladstone, Queensland.
