JEG JR'S NEW RIDE

Race guys are car guys and three-time NHRA champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. is no exception. The winner of 47 national events, who is currently third in the POWERade rankings, recently took delivery of a car he has been searching for in his spare time -- a 1960 Cadillac Series 62 four-window sedan. The car is one of only 9984 made.

"Although it may not be the most sought after Cadillac it appeals to me especially for the rear window and how the roof appears to be floating over the last 10 inches or so," Coughlin said. "It reminds of the great architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

"I enjoy Cadillacs of all ages, but I'm particularly fond of the 'flat top' model, which I believe were only available in 1959 and 1960. It's named 'flat top' because of the unique four-window configuration. The front and rear windows wrap around the sides and the door windows appear to be one piece without a pillar; hence the four-window name."

Unlike some vintage car owners that keep their wheels off the road, Coughlin plans to enjoy his new sled.

"I'm going to drive it around and have fun," Coughlin said. "It's in great condition and it's all original with only 68,000 miles. I also considered, before finding this car, contacting Dale Armstrong to inquire about doing a 1960 with modern features like a GM fuel-injected crate motor, disc brakes, electronics upgrade, all that stuff, and I guess its still not too late for that to be an option. We'll have to see.

"I've always loved Cadillacs ever since I was a young boy riding in my grandparent's cars. Plus, my college roommate Jim Rote always had vintage 1960s and 1970s around. I just love them."
