After 18 unsuccessful starts, the Summit-sponsored driver finally grabbed his first No. 1 qualifier of the season, courtesy of a 6.541, 211.86 during Friday qualifying at the NHRA Carolina Nationals in Concord, NC. This is the 34th pole position of his career.

The top spot couldn’t have come at a better time for Line, who said he believes the key to winning a championship is in winning the Countdown to the Championship opener.

“We need to win here if we want to contend for the championship,” said Line. “That’s just how it is. That is the case especially when you are starting from the deficit we are.”

Line will have no cakewalk if he hopes to reach Sunday’s final round. Four of the seven drivers on his side of his ladder are Countdown qualifiers. Also on his side is newly signed third KB Racing driver Buddy Perkinson.

“I looked at the ladder and there are definitely a couple of tough customers,” said Line. “It’s gonna be a hard day.”

Line had the quickest run of the final session, a 6.557 elapsed time at 211.89 miles per hour. He picked up four bonus points during qualifying.

“It’s a big deal to get that low elapsed time,” Line said. “I was pretty happy with that. We didn’t make a very good run in the morning. To come back and do that was great. We got points every run and probably got more this weekend than all year. That’s a big confidence booster for sure.”

Line will face Warren Johnson in the final round of Sunday’s eliminations.
