WINDHAM BUYS TEAM

How lasting are first impressions?

Rookie Pro Stock driver Bill Windham will be doing whatever he can – beginning this weekend at Atlanta Dragway – to wipe away any negatives lingering from his breath-taking qualifying attempt at Las Vegas two weeks ago.

He wasn’t trying to emulate famed stunt driver Joie Chitwood during his precarious two-wheel, left-and-right-side qualifying run at Las Vegas.  Windham, after all, did all the right things to keep the shiny side up on the Big-O Tires Chevy Cobalt.  The car did not suffer any defects and the run received ample television playtime.  How lasting are first impressions?

He wasn’t trying to emulate famed stunt driver Joie Chitwood during his precarious two-wheel, left-and-right-side qualifying run at Las Vegas.  Windham, after all, did all the right things to keep the shiny side up on the Big-O Tires Chevy Cobalt.  The car did not suffer any defects and the run received ample television playtime.

Meanwhile, Windham announced Monday that he and partner Greg Mitchell had purchased the car from Joliet, Ill.-based team owner Greg Hill. They will, however, continue to be part of Hill’s two-car effort that includes veteran driver Kenny “Captain Chaos” Koretsky’s Indicom Electric/Nitro Fish Cobalt.

“Greg Mitchell and I both are multi-Big-O Tire Store owners and we have been partners in drag racing teams,” said Windham, of El Dorado Hills, Calif.  “I wanted to make sure everybody out there knows we own the car.  Those who have issues with my driving can come see me instead of Greg Hill.  Not only that, but I’ve never been a hired driver; I’ve always owned my own stuff.”

Mitchell and Windham were partners with Top Fuel driver David Baca last year and own an A/Fuel dragster that is currently for sale.

As part of the agreement, Windham will lease race engines through Hill and builder Steve Schmidt.  “Greg is going to oversee the power department for the team. We will continue to share racing information and crew chief Eddie Guarnaccia will oversee both Cobalts,” added Windham.

“This is a positive move and we are all happy about it. I think we have a great scenario with Greg Hill, Kenny and me.  We are going to grow this two-car team.  Plus it put me back into an ownership position and the sponsors are happy with that.”

Windham planned to put in three days of serious testing (Monday through Wednesday) to get more comfortable in his Cobalt.  “We are planning to make five passes a day,” he said. “Then we are going to Atlanta and I’m going to put our car in the starting lineup.  I want to show those who doubt me that I can go in straight line.”
