With Spencer Massey's dismissal from Don Schumacher Racing and no new sponsorship for that car on the horizon, speculation already has begun about what might become of the sidelined Todd Okuhara/Phil Shuler-tuned dragster.
Three-time Top Fuel champion Larry Dixon is among the logical candidates to drive it, should the team owner decide to field a third dragster again.
Dixon said Monday he has had conversations with Schumacher. But fans shouldn't count on a Dixon-DSR agreement in the immediate future.
"I spoke with Don earlier this year, and he made it clear that if sponsorship was brought, I would be in a position to explore options there (and elsewhere for that matter). Since then, I have been working on that," Dixon said. "Until I have money, no sense wasting their time."
He did say, "I am pretty far along with two companies on primary funding for '13, but [I'm] still not done yet. Hopefully in the next week or two. Hopefully."
He said he is "reviewing options at the moment."
The Mello Yello Drag Racing Series kicks off the 2013 season with the Feb. 14-17 Winternationals at Pomona, Calif.
